  1. Yeah it's don't kill Bambi out here until the car crashes go up, the plantings are destroyed and their spraying for ticks in the school fields. Then all of a sudden you stop hearing so much from the idiots. Every once and again you'll get a pike of BS like the White Buffalo study to chemically sterilize doe, but that's it. Crazies. Doe only first two weeks is an acceptable population management, but then again LI hunters do a good job taking a lot f deer and we have a lot of deer on the over priced sand bar! My write in to them was to keep the season as it was, with limitless and doe tags and a bonus successful archer tag (as they use to do in the past) that is for either sex if a doe was taken during the first two weeks. That went received like a fart in church. Seemed to me like good compromise (haha, compromise with the King!!!!). But no such luck.
  2. Three blades are ng period. Turkey too. They fall into the barbed category.
  3. lol, and there is something definitely to be said for keeping it simple.
  4. Good catch! Thanks. Sawyers will is the silent hunting buddy in Suffolk Cty!
  5. Wondering here with a purpose..... Scope reticles have become interesting to say the least. Mil dots. windage indicators, ranging, circles dots, uhhhhh. What going on and how often is anything other then the point where the x and y intersect ever really needed to shoot on deer? I have a Zeiss Terra 3-9 x 42 scope I took off the BAR when I put in for consignment. The scope is sitting in th essays box doing nothing. Without a doubt it is the nicest piece of glass I have ever looked through. It is the standard plex reticle. Nothing fancy. I have two rifles it can legitimately go on. An A-bolt 30-06 or an A-Bolt 270. Even my son's 30-06 Rem 7600 can be candidate (once I get the trigger worked in that). All three have descent scopes at the moment. The bolts have Burris glass and the 7600 has a Vortex on it. All three are zero to 200, but honestly its not all that terrible to zero a scope in. My dilemma is I feel like I'm not doing the bolt guns justice by going to the Zeiss standard plex scope. Have I lost my mind here???? How often do we get shots past 100 yds in South Western NY? And, even if we do, with either a 270 Win or a 30-06, both really flat out to 250, is a range finding reticle a must have? Tell me if you think I am nuts and that I should take that Zeiss scope out of moth balls!!!
  6. Its not that terrible, I've been hunting them for 22 years. See points below: 1- Basically nothing needs a reservation of check in / check out at the check stations (one in Ridge and the other in Montauk) until Nov. 1. 2- First come first serve all of Oct. 3- Park only at the numbered spots on the designed roads and the signs say how many vehicles per spot. En Con's see the spot with two many vehicles they'll all get ticked, they won't try and figure out who was the last truck there. 4- Also, no more than two hunters per vehicle. 5- Remember to put your Access Permit dash card in the window of the truck (get that on the DEC Region 1 link). Its good for three years ad its free. It's a two part form, keep the other copy with you. 6- After that all standard DEC rules apply and watch the signs for no hunting zones within those properties. 7- Nov 1 and after all properties north of the 495 require a reservation and check in at the appropriate check station (Ridge of Montauk respectively). Most importantly don't hunt a property that requires a reservation without one. If you get caught you'll be screwed. 8- This year doe only the first two weeks. 9- No bows in shotgun / muzzle loader lands during the special season weeks see the DEC chart for where you can still bow hunt in Jan (there are a few properties). 10- No Crossbows at all. If you are a Suffolk Cty resident you can get a Green Key and go to the Indian Island or West Sayville Parks Office and get an annual parks land deer hunting access pass. It's $35 and well worth it. You have to be a Suffolk Resident for that and they hunt in Jan too for the special season weeks. Last point, invest in Rhino Skin under wear for all of Oct and the first 1/2 on Nov. Everything in Suffolk bites, the things you can't see bite the worst, and virtually nothing can get through Rhino Skin. If you have any other questions PM me.
  7. Hard to beat that A-Bolt!!!! I know that feeling.
  8. $65. Found him on eBay of all places. The guy was great to deal with. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Remington-760-7600-750-7400-870-1100-Trigger-Job-/181837366409?hash=item2a565a0489
  9. Okay, let's hear what comes to camp with you. For me a my Browning A-Bolt 30-06 and my Dad's old 7400 Remy in 30-06. If we are driving deer or still hunting I use the semi, otherwise I hunt from stands with the bolt gun. What comes with you all?
  10. 35 Whelen in a 7600 pump gun. And a 25-06 in an old 700.
  11. found a guy in PA who cleans up the crappy triggers in 7600 and 7400's. I sent him my 7400 trigger a couple of weeks ago. 4 day turn around. He took the creep out, set the trigger break to 3 pounds down from 6 and put a set screw in to take out the over travel. I will send him the 7600 trigger next week. Made a huge difference in the feel on the 7400.
  12. plenty of opinions to be heard round here. Welcome.
  13. We had a guy we threw out of our club after two years,.... pain in the A$$! Shut off the Internet Al Gore, when he was around you just didn't need it because he knew everything. We called him Topper and IKE (I Know Everything). Anyway he's gone. A new and much better guy took his slot.
  14. Jamestown Wall Hanger, and Krischners Silver Back. Both work great for me. Aside from that, last years tarsals.
  15. got a whole family of crabbies out East LI area. The best of the lot I've seen on my cameras is a big 12. He had the body of a 5 year old on him. A true tank. No day time pics of him ever. Truth be told I haven't seen him on camera in two seasons so he maybe gone. But he's definitely a P&Y deer so I doubt he was taken legally if he's gone. He sure made a lot of does happy because there is a bunch of 2 and 3 year olds with crab claw racks out that way.
  16. I have a friend who believes the bigger the better. He's a big 45/70 guy. His motto is why hit a deer with a fly swatter when you can drive a Buick into them instead. Interesting thought process. Then take a minute and think about how many Northeastern deer have been hung on poles using a 30/30 Win. Not exactly a powerhouse round by any measure but enough voodoo to take a deer. I am pretty much a 30-06 guy. I have yet to see a deer take a second step from any 'aught 6. If they do it's never more then one or two followed by a face plant. By no means a steam roller of a round but ample enough to do the job and just about anyone can deal with the recoil. Aside from that I know out west guys use a lot of 25-06 and the 270 variations with great results. I can't knock the 270. My first few deer were with shot with a 270 Win Browning A-Bolt that I still have an hunt with from time to time. I think upwards of a ton of energy with a quality bullet in the forward 1/3 of a deer and your gonna need your drag rope. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  17. I might be late to party here, but I have a few Timney triggers and one is in a Vanguard. They are very easy to do and if you order it directly from Timney they will factory set the brake weight for you.
  18. Hmmmm, that is a great topic. I try to carry something light and fast pointing. A 35 Marlin Lever Scout Gun I have is great if the cover is lighter since it has a red dot scope on it. Or maybe my son's 30-06 Rem 7600!!!!! Since I hunt more then he does anyway! HAHA
  19. It makes no sense at all to me. Seems totally random.
