More Good News For NY
hueyjazz replied to Steve D's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
I highly doubt anyone is using these compounds in industry for the last 30 years. I spent 40 years with environmental engineer in my job title. Per legislation they are. halogenated chemicals, organophosphorus chemicals, and organonitrogen chemicals. Well, halogenated chemicals have been long banned as ozone killers, organophosphorus chemicals are relatives of sarin gas, so I don't see that happening if for no other reason you would have to log every ounce of these chemicals used because they could be used as a weapon of mass destruction. The Feds require tracking at every point. Can't say I know much about organonitrogen but I'm sure it's toxic. Industry has very good reasons not to use hazardous chemicals in their process. Kathy has been playing a lot of tricks lately. This is a "feel good" piece of legislation for things that are already legislated. But she can say she did something now. The most environmental president we ever had???? Nixon Before him nothing really existed, and anything goes. He formed the EPA, OSHA and the basis of all the environmental laws as we have them today. -
Water vapor is a byproduct of natural gas. However, the combustion byproducts of burning propane such as CO and water vapor should not be leaking into living space from a hot water heater. Jerkman, make darn sure you have good working CO detectors especially if this place was one on the cheap with questionable installation. Not everyone understands how to do ducting correctly for drafting. Carbon monoxide is odorless and tasteless. A silent killer. From a physics perspective, warm air can hold more moisture than cold air. The glass is at or below freezing point. (If glass is supposed to be insulated, it's shot) The warmer air in the house containing moisture is hitting glass, condensing and rolling down a bit and freezing toward the bottom. And oh yeah, those windows suck. Inside a house there's lots of things that add moisture. Cooking, showering, and human breathing are top adders.

You got the modern-day ones. The originals had a larger round hole in them to light a cigarette. These handwarmers were a Boy Scout's best friend in 70's when we got to winter camp in snow drifts.

Drivers Urged to Be Alert for Moose in the Adirondacks

I was skiing Mad River Glen in Vermont. They had to post a Moose warning as a moose was running across the slopes at times. Now that would hurt to hit -
What makes you the (self-proclaimed) better hunter?
hueyjazz replied to DoubleDose's topic in Deer Hunting
For me I don't have to get a deer when I'm in the woods. I really enjoy being in woods and watching all that goes on. I've had many a successful hunting day without seeing a deer. An entertaining fox or fisher cat will often make my day. That makes me a better self-proclaimed hunter as I feel good about myself And for those they have to perch themselves up with accomplishments by looking down on others, they are often lacking in the things that actually matter.- 46 replies

I've been told that mice can't cross sheet metal. Part of plan is to wrap each leg and part of stair riser with sheet metal. I've saved building materials for years plus I have Amish sawmills all around me. I can even bring my own trees to them to mill. I do want to blend into surroundings but I have to admit. I've had those truck caps, I can see how that would work. Urinal, Love that idea. Tired of piss jugs. No stink comes up tube?

So, after 40 some years of hunting ladder stands, I've decided to build a nice, enclosed stand. I will start this week dropping some trees to tuck it inside of my stand of tall pines where I've had regular success on a major deer trail. I've decided 6' x 6' to be optimal size for me. Small enough to hunt all windows solo but big enough to train a grandkid. I won't put it up any higher than 12'. I'm not afraid of heights but the longer I hunt the lower my stands get for shot angle. It will have stairs rather than a ladder. My one concern is stairs will need to run parallel to shack. I may need to make small deck to attach stairs and enter shack. I worry about ice and snow collecting and freezing door shut. Shack will have windows. Not sure about insulation yet. I don't want a mouse hotel. I've toured my countryside looking at other's stands for ideas. Not sure what I'm doing for roof yet. Saltbox would be easiest. I did get elevator brackets to attach to 4 x 4's. Any suggestions from your experiences on what you would want in your stands? What worked, what didn't.

The Best Hunting Gear Investment You've Made in the Last 10 Years

A double wheeled wheelbarrow. That sucker has been handy as heck moving deer out of woods for me and friends. It also does a decent job of moving firewood too. -
The EPA pretty much banned all wood fired boilers effective January 2020. The technology doesn't exist to pass emission requirements. In fact, any new purchase of wood stove is now quite different than those made before. They have things like catalytic converters to limit what goes up stack. If you look at burning wood from an environmental aspect it actually is pretty bad. First, it's pretty inefficient. Most of the heat goes right up the stack and not the environment you want to heat. Burning wood isn't complete combustion. A lot of particulate goes into atmosphere. There are places where wood stoves have cause issues with local air quality. Colorado comes to mind. I do get the reason for people wanting to burn wood. I have a wood stove and acres of hardwoods on my property. I'm remote on a mountain so propane is my fuel for furnace. A couple years ago I installed a high efficiency and low ambient electric heat pump. I've drastically lowered my propane requirements with not much increase of electric. I would highly endorse their consideration. Plus, most utilities will give an incentive for their installation. Now as far as us all going to electric vehicles, we got a major problem there with lithium. All the major reserves of it are outside of the US. And oh, disposal of lithium batteries isn't easy or environmentally friendly.

One trick with getting an Interstate battery cheap is the Interstate distributor always has blems for sale at a hefty discount. These function fine and the only flaw is cosmetic

Wow, I thought I was only one that had misfire. (And I'm still kicking myself on such an easy shot) Bullet bouncing off. Now that's a real kick in teeth. For the record, I wasted three primers before loading. But I think my sin was bring in and out of cold and warm resulting in some condensation. Might have happen anywhere I left it considering how strange weather has been on our peak. I have to admit, I don't like having a gun somewhat loaded and not in my control. Locking in truck doesn't do it for me. However, a short-term sheet metal safe in pole barn might be in my future. A have a few empty since getting real safes.

Sabot and bullet appeared to be moved a bit but not much. I'm positive it was seated at witness mark before I started that morning. I did have this load in there since the start of muzzleloader season so moisture could be it. I don't normally keep a load in so long.
-
It was and every time I fired a primer before loading, I saw leaves move on ground.
-
I unscrewed breech in field and dumped powder out. I do wish I had poured it in my bare hand but I had just let it fall to ground. But it didn't seem clumped. Later back at cabin I pushed out bullet and sabot. No surprise there I'm anal about checking witness mark before I even enter field daily and I'm positive it was proper load for the witness mark. But I agree with both of you. Something isn't right. I just don't know what it is unless they are really serious about needing magnum primers I've had experience with black powder and Pyrodex but this is my first venture with BH. I did fire the gun maybe 25 times in the summer without a failure with BH. It was dead on. I made a point of tuning gun scope with a cold barrel as it would be on hunt day.
-
So I retired this year and I finally get to hunt muzzleloader season. I've owned and fired black powder and alike for many years but have only hunted a weekend here and there due to work. I got myself an Optima to replace a much older CVA inline gun I had. I'm using Blackhorn with proper plug. I've never used BH but it seems all good and I follow load recommendations. My one issue has been not being able to locate magnum 209 primers but I do have CCI 209 primers and all the times I fired before in practice with BH or anything else, they never failed. I was out all the first week and saw very little. It's been windy and too warm on mountain. I keep a little condom on end of barrel and bring it to a cool basement at night with primer out so it's ready for next morning. Day after Christmas I finally see three Doe with one being very large. I wait for the little do I walk, kill shot; pull trigger and primer goes off, blows condom off but powder doesn't ignite. Yes, gun was all clean and I blew three primers before loading. All good. So few things: 1. All my practice with Blackhorn was in warmer weather. Would that matter? I would think not. 2. Do I get condensation in barrel from moving from hot to cold for several days? Should I pull out charge every now and then? If so, what's too long? 3. Is this the case where those primers will work most of the time but this was the time they didn't??? (All I wanted for Christmas was magnum primers. And Santa screwed me)

For my son in law, I wrapped a M48 Mauser in a Red Ryder box. In with the gun was a note. "You'll shoot your eye out". Guess who was supposed to be the role of father in the movie, but he wanted too much cash. Jack Nicholson. Could you imagine that???

If leasing killing it then why haven't I seen an uptick on the public lands? For many deer hunting is a one-two day event. Opening of rifle Whatever floats your boat I also suspect many of the new weren't mentored in any way got a gun, a license, spent a little time in the woods and found out it's not like TV hunters. Too bad but with effort comes knowledge and skill that enables you. And a mentor sure helps. Not sure TV shows count but I will admit to seeing some good YouTube

Please don't think I defend Baldwin. He's proved himself an A-hole many times over, but I do believe he has a lot less responsibility here than many others. This is a movie set. They point guns at each other and pull the trigger all the time. Hollywood has the guns where the clips never run out. More blood and guts the better. Actors love guns on sets, it's when they get off the stage then find them evil. In my experience blanks do look different. The ones I've seen are a crimped over mouth with no bullet. However, in a wheel gun you have to stare at the face of each round to verify this. This would be the job of the armorer. Who should be loading the gun. An actor would not be expected to unload and reload a gun. There are many wheel guns you can fire without pulling trigger. If hammer gets struck or released before fully cocked they can go off. Wasn't Baldwin trying to be a cowboy? Or isn't he just another Barney Fyfe. I would think since Brandon Lee died from a blank gun there should be some expectation of firearms safety with actors.

I have an El-cheapo version of a Mossberg 500. Gun is fairly accurate for a pump shotgun but it's the worse rattle trap I've ever encountered. My cheap and dirty fix was to put a little piece of folded paper towel between rails. Just enough to stop rattle if I were to move any in my stand. Certainly not a permanent fix nor would I want to pull it into mechanism. But the O ring makes way more sense for you Rem gun

By George I think I got it. Thanks to all.

So I took one buck during crossbow and tagged it with my muzzleloader tag. The during regular gun I took another buck and tag that with regular tag. I did not purchase an archery tag but am able to. Do I now purchase an archery tag to hunt muzzleloader but I can only take a doe? Sorry if I'm being dense.
-
So I can go to any authorized license distributor and ask for and pay another muzzleloader tag? I notice when I go online it won't allow me to purchase an additional one.
