Beware of overly generalized statements regarding any part of the legal system.

If I was rich, a summer place in Alaska might be ok. Any of you guys ever watch some of those TV shows about people that live up there (Alaska The Last Frontier and Life Below Zero, etc.). Yeah, I know a lot of that is staged just to beef up the drama level. But the weather isn't staged. Those people are a completely different breed of human.....lol.

It could be that that was a lady turtle off to lay eggs. I think June is about the time that they do that. They can travel quite a ways overland to lay eggs, and that is often the reason they wind up crossing roads. One year when I was plowing a field, I noticed a whole bunch of snapping turtle eggs that had been laid in the field. This was close to 3 or 4 hundred yards from the swamp and on the opposite side of the road. I re-buried them off to the side of the field, and hoped for the best.

Not so sure about the NRA
Doc replied to bubba's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
I was hoping that the conversation would not be interrupted by the two members of the Terry Nichols and Tim McVeigh fan club with their delusional nonsense and constant attempts at sidetracking every discussion to their twisted versions of America bashing. But alas the usual attempts at hijacking topics is visited on us once again. -
Would the same result occur in NYS? I'm not so sure.

Not so sure about the NRA

From what I have read about the Hochul position on gun control, it sounds like we would be extremely lucky if she happened to replace Cuomo for any reason like the Patterson inheritance to the throne occurred. That's why I asked what kinds of quotes, news reports, or voting records anyone has come across that really indicates that her attitude on guns has changed one bit. I think I would take Hochul over Cuomo, and an awful lot of other Democrats and Republicans too, for that matter, any day of the week. Perhaps it would be another opportunity to get a pro-gun governor. -

Well, before we get all super-upset, can anybody show me any anti-gun legislation that she has supported? Can we find a link to any anti-gun comments that she has made? Is there anything that says that she has changed her position on any aspect of gun control? Yes, she has accepted a nomination in the Cuomo administration, and it occurs to me that the choice may have been a concession to the pressure that Cuomo is feeling from gun owners. Did he choose her because her philosophies on gun control match his, or was the choice because they don't and he is hoping to win back some of the gun owners because of that? Now to be practical about it all, I have to ask why anyone would be concerned about a Lieutenant Governor candidate anyway. Is anyone able to point to the last meaningful act that any Lieutenant Governor has made for or against any gun issue, or any issue at all for that matter? Tell me what earth shattering impact that Bob Duffy had on anything. So first of all, there is nothing that says that Hochul has changed her mind on anything, and even if she did, is that going to make her anymore relevant as Lieutenant Governor? -
The distance thing is not a big deal for me. It is more a question of being able to frequently practice for awhile in shooting sessions with my deer rifle and actually enjoy it without putting up with the shoulder mangling that my 12 gauge used to supply. frankly, in my neck of the woods, distance is not limited by the weapon, but rather by the density of trees, brush, etc. But oh what a great feeling to be able to pick out what hair I want to hit and then make it happen.

I think we've got some internal house-cleaning that's in order. I have kind of had a bit of a problem with their fund-raising techniques for quite some time. At this point, I no longer am cordial about my responses. If the first no is not accepted, it gets very unfriendly after that point. I am concerned that some of their pressure techniques are driving members away. -
Has anybody ever heard an explanation as to why it makes sense to require the display of the back tag in the Southern Zone while it isn't required in the Northern Zone. It makes absolutely no sense to me at all, but I am curious how the DEC justifies the difference. Is it one of those politically inspired nonsensical regulations?

That's a nice looking critter. Congratulations are in order on your first bow-kill. They are all great, but none are more significant than the first.

Well, at the risk of being teased for watching reality shows, I have to confess to following a lot of these Alaskan programs that are all over the TV. While the story-lines may or may not be a bit suspect, I'm pretty sure that the depictions of the unending winter nights, along with severe bouts of cabin fever, and the crazy winter extremes, and the frequent rain during the rest of the year are probably pretty accurately represented. Not exactly what I would consider an ideal climate.
-
Honestly? It is all about arrogance and a need to feel self-importance. It's an interesting picture of personality defect that they have been constructing in this forum. There really is no point to all the delusional nonsense that either of them are spewing. There has been not one positive comment or notion of solution simply because they are both devoid of any useful ideas, and solutions aren't really necessary to their needs. These guys really think that the world needs them that they alone can see evils that no one else can. This is the nonsense that feeds their egos and basically gives them the feeling of some small purpose in life, even though it is all based on paranoia and self-service. They would be truly comical if it weren't for the fact that they actually take themselves seriously. That fact makes them simply pathetic. So they are social anomalies that probably get a whole lot more attention than they should, but they are just another extreme version of the variety of personalities that you will find on internet forums.

It is amazing how many people think NYS is completely paved.

I've got to say that the expression on that bear's face really does look a lot like a smile. I think the sight of your camera made his day. And by the look of the next picture I would say that he had some fun with you.
-
I believe that the long winter nights would drive me berserk. Being locked into a cabin for months at a time because of the excessive depths of snow can't really be a lot of fun. I consider our ugly version of cabin fever here in NY, and can't imagine adding darkness and twice as much snow and ridiculous temperatures into that experience. As a hunting trip perhaps I would enjoy it, but I do have to say that I am a bit concerned about being among some critters that consider human flesh to be a delicacy. Also, Those little flying black things that seem to always be banging into the camera lenses up there have not escaped my attention. Does anybody ever get accustomed to that? My thought is that Alaska makes a much better reality show to watch on TV than it does an actual living experience.

By the way, getting back to the "Tide Turning" topic, for all those that think that we stand alone, I was just reading in the paper that we have some new allies ..... and from a very strange area of the voting public. It turns out that the "Working Families Party", a bunch of pinko libs, are feeling now that Cuomo isn't liberal enough to suit them (imagine that if you can!) They are thinking of running a candidate against him. That move alone could cut Cuomo's lead over Astorino in half. The green party nominee said he would volunteer to run on the Working Families Party if asked. It kind of puts me in mind of that saying that "politics makes strange bed-fellows". So while some are throwing in the towel, the political front is in motion and the game ain't over until the fat lady sings. Of course if the "negative ninny's" get their way, they will pull as many gun owners away from participating on our side of the election as possible and keep things looking rosy for Cuomo. I guess that's just an anchor that we have to drag along this year.

Nope it's really gone. We'll have to wait until one of the more tech oriented moderators signs in this morning to see when it will be fixed.

"Why doesn't NY have a dove season?"
Doc replied to mike rossi's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
Interesting comment in light of the way the history of the Safe Act passage. But anyway it is time for me to bow out of this fiasco. Personally, I could care less whether there is a dove season or not. So I really have no dog in this fight. And since you already have all the answers, and are not interested in entertaining any other opinions but your own, do whatever you think you must and good luck to you.- 49 replies

Ha-ha .... I think everything that can be said about our two resident haters of the American system has already been correctly stated. Now it is time to get back to the real issue at hand and ignore these defeatist quitters. They have monopolized enough time and have tried to distract and disrupt the efforts of those that are serious about straightening up the gun situation in NY as opposed to the fringe elements looking to run away from it.
-
I think another thing that makes this question a little hard to answer is my relative inexperience with living in other states. For example while I know NYS is incredibly liberal, I have never seen a study that quantified and ranked where we stand on that issue relative to other states. Cost of living, educational ranking, quality of life, etc., etc., one by one, if we go down the endless list of criteria, it would require quite a impossibly huge study to compare each line item for each state. So all we can do is base it all on some kind of general, totally uninformed, feeling. A real honest assessment, would take a whole lot more research than I am willing to invest .... lol.

Looking forward to all the pictures.

"Why doesn't NY have a dove season?"
Doc replied to mike rossi's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
So you are saying that what I said is not true and shows that I am uninformed. You are telling me that there is no impact from the general public on these proposals. You are telling me that opposition to new hunting seasons has nothing to do with emotional reactions of the general public and the organized anti-hunting organizations. Well, I must respectfully disagree with you on all of that. You asked "Why NY doesn't have a dove season?" and I offered my opinion. If doing that has in some way offended you, then I will refrain from replying to your questions in the future. It sounds like you have everything under control and really didn't need to ask the question in the first place.- 49 replies

Get ready for more gun control BS......
Doc replied to Deerthug's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
So years ago, there was an occasional murder, but it was not a daily event. I never locked a door until I was mostly grown and even then we didn't really have to worry about break-ins. In the cities, gang wars usually were really fist fights. That was pretty much the limit on any kinds of violent confrontations. There was always complete respect for police, elders, parents, teachers and each other. Sure there was the occasional trouble maker, but nobody whipped out their gun and started shooting people over their bicycle or sneakers or car. So what the hell has happened over the decades. Whatever it was, new laws have not been the answer, because we sure have had a pile of them added on and each day violence gets worse. If passing laws was the answer, why do we still have a growing problem? As in-love with studies and surveys as we are, how come nobody has studied the heck out this evolving violent society and tried to come up with any real answers that make more sense than banning and restricting guns? It seems that people are always looking for an easy answer, and trying to find ways to blame some in-animate object. I guess that's easier than finding and working at solving the real underlying causes.
