  1. Thanx everyone. It's hard to imagine that I made it this long. And I am still able to climb that nasty "killer" hill out back, and draw my bow without screaming in pain.....lol. Just a bit like the energizer bunny. Let's see how long I can keep it all going. I probably won't be setting any records, but it sure is fun trying.
  2. Isn't this the same guy that invented the "automatic" crossbow?
  3. If you can figure some way of keeping the dope-heads off the highway, I don't care what you use to help you get through the day. I just don't need anymore druggies hurtling their vehicles in my direction with their brains addled on yet another legalized chemical alteration.
  4. I have 15 yard range in the basement. I just shoot smaller spots. It keeps the form good.
  5. So is the DEC going to be able to separate out the crossbow kills on their reports? It would make for some interesting stats.
  6. Did you ever get the impression that most computer operating systems change just so they can sell more software that has been left incompatible by the changes? I think they are running out of useful things to add or revise, and are now starting on the changes that aren't necessarily any better, but simply "different". I don't want to play their game anymore. I think that when I have to replace my computer with a new one, the first thing I will do is to change the operating system back to Windows 7 that I am using now. I have been told that some of my old office products may not work with windows 10 because they have lost the ability to read macros written using macro-language instead of visual Basic. Why should I have to reconstruct dozens of spreadsheets just because the inept software writers of the day can not maintain compatibility. These spreadsheets have basically run our household for over 3 decades, and Windows 7 still recognizes those old spreadsheets that use the old macro-language macros. I don't need to have some techno-nerd wrecking perfectly good flawless spread sheets just because he can.
  7. I am curious.....Are you shooting with any kind of bow-sight, or sighting method, or are you shooting pure instinctive? I have seen guys shooting exhibition demos that let their instinct guide the shot 100% and the results are things that could never be duplicated by some of the best shooters with the finest high-tech archery equipment. I watched Stacy Groscup shoot aspirins out of the air and shoot cardboard disks out of the air...... No sights or gap methods.....Just whatever he had between his eyes and his brain. That is a pretty wild thing to behold and if I were to ever go back to my recurves, it would only be 100% pure instinctive. Another thing I always wanted to do is to build my own longbow and arrows (including heads) and shoot a deer with it. That would be a hell of an accomplishment!
  8. It seems to me that the whole year has been a slaughter on the roads. Even before the rut. In fact all through the summer. But that is just an observation, and nothing very scientific. However, there was something that I read years back where it was claimed that road kill was factored into deer population estimates by the DEC.
  9. I do a whole lot better when I can see some of the bark. But I will say that it has a lot of the grain characteristics of oak.
  10. Is there any agency that keeps track of highway deer kills? I understand that there is a correlation of some sort between the highway kills and the deer population. But I have yet to find anyone that is keeping track of deer kills on the highway. I have seen a level of carnage on the highways in our area like no other year in my memory. I am talking about a super-significant difference in road kill over the past year. Taken along with the level of deer sign and sightings, I would have to conclude that the population is very, very high. Couple all that with the fact that the constant snow throughout most of the season made the deer stand out like neon signs, and I find it very easy to believe that the deer take would be very high for the year.
  11. And your ignorance is showing if you don't know that mind altering drugs of any sort (booze included) are huge contributors to highway fatalities. And adding legality to one more of those is not going to bode well innocent drivers who have to share the road and attempt to dodge impaired drivers. Are you seriously trying to argue that point.
  12. Combat Gun Violence: 2018 was by far the worst year for school shootings in American history. To once again lead the nation on gun safety, Governor Cuomo will push to pass the Red Flag Law, ban bump stocks and extend the waiting period for purchasing a gun from three days to 10 days What is it about gun rights that makes these people pass restrictive laws without first justifying them with facts. Since when did we become a minority whose constitutionally guaranteed rights can be screwed with on a whim and without any prior scientific justification? EX: How many actual crimes were committed using bump stocks? How many armed crimes would have actually been averted with a 10 day waiting period? These idiots pass "just in case" laws without any numbers showing that they are addressing real problems or providing any estimations regarding expected results. And what the hell is this Red Flag Law? Is that the brilliant assault on our first amendment rights that regard internet privacy? Pass the Dream Act: While the federal government has declared war on new immigrants, New York is standing up for our immigrant communities. This year, New York will pass the Dream Act once and for all to ensure a higher education system that opens the door of opportunity to all of our children. It always seems rather convenient for the left to leave out the word "illegal" when discussing the invasion and assault on our borders that is taking place. Illegal aliens are not "immigrants". They are invaders eager to take advantage of our U.S. tax dollars. It's a damn free-for-all, and the Dems love it because it creates new voters eager to vote for the "free lunch" providers. Improve Our Democracy: To continue New York's progressive path of justice for all, Governor Cuomo will protect our democracy to make sure our government truly represents the people. While the federal government works to disenfranchise voters. Let's get it right as to who is trying to disenfranchise voters. The Dems have mounted an all out assault against the legislative process, and decided to resist any activity that the legally elected president proposes, even though he is trying to propose and pass the very activities and laws that he was elected on..... by the voters. Protect LGBTQ Rights: New York was the first large state to pass marriage equality, but as the federal government still seeks to discriminate against the LGBTQ community, Governor Cuomo will codify the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act into New York State law and end conversion therapy. Protections on top of protections for the squeaky wheels of our society whether they need it or not. Legalize Adult Use of Recreational Marijuana: Governor Cuomo will end the disproportionate criminalization of one race over another by regulating, legalizing and taxing adult use of recreational marijuana. Isn't that nice. Now we have an additional choice as to what mind and consciousness altering substance we can use as we fling our car headlong and unguided down the road. Next time you watch an oncoming car drifting toward your grill just remember that our Governor gave the driver the right to endanger your life.
  13. I have never washed any of my hunting clothes .....ever. The thought is that if I am not playing the wind 100% correctly, I will never beat the deer's nasal defenses no matter what I do to my clothes. But that may just be rationalization. I will say that I have been wearing some pretty nasty old unwashed hunting clothes when I have gotten pretty close to touching distance of deer without them ever being spooked (3-times). But the wind was straight away from the deer and right in my face. I am thinking that all the cleanliness activity probably causes more weird household scents than simply letting the fresh air de-stink them outside under the overhang of the well-house.
  14. It's not a hole but rather a mole-like projection called a fibroma. Harmless actually. And is kind of a bonus. Look at all the extra free meat! Yum-yum
  15. I can remember when many hunters thought shooting a doe was some kind of shameful thing. I'm awful glad that the state didn't decide to go back to "buck only". There has always been some sort of elitism within the hunting ranks. If you do happen to get one of the huge bucks that really are out there already, it will truly be a real trophy that means something, not something made less notable that was made easier to get through management manipulation.
  16. Apparently you guys are not afflicted with the same malady as I am when it comes to cider. For me it is the world's best laxative. I absolutely love cider, hot or cold, but on stand, it would cause near-instant problems.....lol.
  17. Frankly, I have no idea why she couldn't pull that bow back. It may have been lack of practice or maybe it was a combination of cold and time in stand. I remember a time years ago when I had bought a bow set at 80#. That was no problem, and I used it for about a year and a half set at that weight. I always practiced every night and shot two NFAA field archery rounds every week. No problems ......... Until that day that I spent several hours on deer stand in high winds and 22 degrees temperature. A doe came in and it was a scene just like in the video. My muscles had seized up against the cold. I spent those hours with my hands jammed into my pockets and my shoulders all crunched up bracing against the wind-driven cold and by golly I couldn't for the life of me get that bow to break over. So, if that was the case with that girl, I completely sympathize with her. I know the surprising effect that wind driven super cold can have on the human body.
  18. I guess I have said it often enough back in every "crossbow topic", but I will say it again. It is only a matter of time before firearms become part of bow season. The fact is that they already are. Not long ago we had a threat from the DEC of adding muzzleloaders to areas of under-harvest. It didn't take them too long to put the role of total deer herd management on the backs of bowhunters when they thought they could get away with it. "You bowhunters better control that herd or we'll be adding muzzleloaders". I see from the results of this thread that the idea has now been permanently implanted in the minds of many hunters. Little by little, precedent by precedent, bow season is becoming a "catch-all" season for anyone with any weapon to stake a claim.
  19. Quote: "Would You Support Elk in NY?" Maybe yes....maybe no. I would want some very detailed research done to ensure the compatibility with the deer of the state. I don't want any species introduced that would compete with the deer herd. I would not want any additional species that might introduce or increase any diseases. I am not saying that elk introduction would do any of these things, but I would like to see exhaustive research done to make sure that all i's are dotted and t's crossed when it come to ensuring that there are no unintended consequences.
  20. Politically, I seldom agreed with him, but there is no doubt that he was a real man and a great human being.
  21. Ha-ha-ha..... This topic is so funny because it is so true. I always get them back in the bags, but never know exactly how I did it. If you wrestle with it long enough, usually some happy accident unknowingly happens.....but only after I am reduced to a cursing idiot. How in hell did they ever figure out that design?
  22. About the only thing that can be said about this topic with any certainty is that the one who is beating their chest the loudest, and is frantic to make you believe his prowess, and is desperate that you pay attention to their ranting about their expertise is most likely the most pathetic loser who really has no clue what they are doing.
  23. As I said, the evolution of bow season is a long list of situations where hunters have always been looking for that magic bow, gadget and go-faster that would replace actual effort and time afield and a need to actually master a difficult weapon. The compound was the first major departure from what the season was initially created for. It was the precedent that sent us all on headlong fling toward "success at any cost". And it's not exactly slowing down. It does make a person pause and ask "is there really an end to it all?" Or is the natural end simply the blurring of special seasons until there aren't any.
  24. I'm not sure, but I do know that that was the entire reason that I took up bow hunting. It certainly wasn't because it was so productive. We used to come into work Monday morning and all gather around and talk about the doe that we saw, or maybe a well used trail that we found. And my gosh if somebody got lucky enough to actually get a shot that was the highlight of the conversation for the whole day. As far as equipment, I was using whatever I could afford, and at that time it wasn't much. It certainly wasn't state of the art materials. You were doing good if you had a matched set of Port Orford cedar arrows. Yeah, I think tradition and challenge was perhaps the only attraction to bowhunting.
