  1. OMG this turned into a funny post. lol I know why I keep coming back... This is why crazy/senile people are fun on web sites... Hopefully we all get to that age... If I say the same thing twice, someone hit me over the head. If I say the same thing twice, someone hit me over the head. O yea I am told I am starting to repeat myself but I think they are out of thier minds... LMAO
  2. Welcome to the site! Hope you enjoy it as much as I do! I hunt Moose river, close to inlet area you probably hunt... Purchased my lifetime last year, very glade I did... Feel free to post, thats what this site is for! Great information on so many subjects! Good luck this year!!!
  3. The title states he was defending himself, you wrote the title and thier for it is believed that is your opinion. Next time write Shooting, was this self defense or not? Justified? What if it was a cop? I understand that was not your intent so no need to reiterate... In so far as the guy knowing trouble was coming, well aparently he expected it... Otherwise he would have been sleeping in his house... Wow I hope I never have to camp outside my house for a idiot brother... I have at least one(idiot brother), the others are OK... More than likely drugs or money are involved and the brother in question is probably in trouble with both... Hope the victims are ok...
  4. OK so I shot my only catskill 4 pt buck with my 308 H & K model 91 semi auto w/5 round clip. I did forget to put on the face paint and that was the last time I used this gun for deer hunting. I did not have the army camo I had real tree. I did hunt with this gun for several years due to loving the over under sight. While I do not fit the profile exaclty, I am sure you would have put me in this catagory due to the weapon... I guese I should sell the gun because it's no longer for hunting, sell all my camo, don't ever hunt with a bow in camo because I might be considered a military guy(They use ghillie suits too...) Then I will have to go out and purchase a red or green colored wool hunting jacket to fit you ideal of a hunter. So much for encouraging returning vets from hunting. Personaly I could care less what any person is wearing or using as a weapon.(As long as it's legal.) I personaly do not judge a book by its cover, especially when hunting! I judge a person by his or her actions. I do not care if a person is white black green or purple, I base how I judge them by how they act, treat others, themselves, and how they respect nature and the animals they hunt. Judging a person by the fact that they use a "black weapon" and use some tactical tools is just stupid. Guese we should tell all the vets NO hunting unless you conform to what we think you should wear. Now due to this post, I must stop hunting w/bow in full camo, sell all my "black" weapons and camo and go buy a wool red hunting jacket, and I have to judge everyone before I get to know them based on what they wore that day... OMG I hope I do not get that closed minded when I hit your age...
  5. I usually draw back on target, anchor/aim and float over proper pin. I find I am usually about 3 inches below to level with target upon anchor set causing a slight rise and float on proper pin. Interesting shoot today at Suffolk Archers, they counted any shot out of the 8 ring a minus 2. Which I had 2 just out ARG! Kills your score... Good fun for all and great practice! Meet a cool guy for the 2nd time at the shoot and was invited to hunt in chenango county, hope that works out!!! Ahhh I love preping for hunting!!! It means the time is close!!! 30 days to be ready next day its on!!! GETSOME Baby!!!
  6. I just kicked out my last brother and became the sole home owner. What a process, wow. Best of luck to you WNYBuckHunter I hope everything works out OK!!!
  7. Thats Nice! Good luck with it Doewhacker!!!
  8. We will have our 3D shoot this weekend, all are welcome, I believe it's 20 entry fee. 8 am registration 9am start. We have our silver arrow 3D shoot in 2 weeks. Both are open to the public. Let me know if anyone is interested. I will be at both shoots and hope to place in the top 3 in both... Now that my arrow rest is not loose any more I am going to try and beat my 276 high score. (Shot 3 weeks with it slightly loose, did not notice untile my arrows started flying about 8 inches to the rt... ARG) Most targets range from about 17 yards to 50 yards depending on who set up the course. Traditional and long bow welcome and shoot from closer distances... I find the course to be a challenge and always a fun time!!! THis is the link to our schedual. http://www.suffolkarchers.com/schedule.html If this sunday is no good you still have 2 weeks to get ready for the next shoot. Let me know if anyone is interested, I have 1 or 2 people shooting with me on sunday and we usually pair up in groups of 4 sometimes more if needed. But more than 4 shooting at the same target can mean damaged arrows so we try to limit that... Lots of fun and a great place to shoot!!!
  9. I am sorry but If I am under attack by anything, be it animal, terrorist, ex girlfriend or disgruntled postal worker, I want the option to protect myself with more than just duck and cover or run and pray. I don't care who is shooting at me, I want to defend myself against ALL threats... You can stay in the city and think the police will protect you... Good luck, they seem to have failed on this one despite killing the shooter it sounds like they shot 8 others in the process. Can anyone say TRAINING!!! I can fire as many rounds as quick as the next guy but in a situation like this where you are encircled by people, even under fire thier needs to be some sort of control... I feel all armed citizens that carry should have to go through a rigorouse training and certification process yearly... If not you loose the carry permit... Too bad they dont have this type of training for the police in the city... And if they do it needs to be examined closely as most police tend to spray and pray and worry about the consiquenses after the fact... Wonder how many rounds the police fired. Lets see 2 cops 2 glocks, 36 rounds 8 of which hit the wrong person. Guese we will have to wait for balistics... Wonder when the last time these two cops went to the shooting range... Again this should be required to have a fire arm. Whats the point in police having a gun if they can't hit the broad side of a barn? Sorry I am just venting...
  10. I am not exactly sure what first sparked my interest in hunting, possibly my first BB/Pelet gun? Possibly the outdoor trips upstate with friend contributed. The summer and winter trips to Maine or Penn for the week long vacations with family might have sparked the intrest. No other family members hunted or fished as a passion. In 1987/88 one of my best friends spoke to me about doing a hunting trip for deer and the rest is history. Deer and big game was something that fascinated me as a child/adult. The fact that big game animals roamed wild woods fighting for survival sent my mind racing. While I did not become successful untile 2000 the passion for hunting never stopped. My main point is this: I am sure many hunters had mentors that helped them get into hunting. Having no mentor or person to lead me into hunting, I would state the fact that: Hunting is in my blood... Question 1: If you did not have a mentor, what factors lead you into hunting? Question 2: If you had a mentor to get you into hunting, do you think with out that person guilding you, you still would have been into hunting? Why or why not. IMO you are born with the itch or not. I use to crave watching deer as a kid, guese I am still a kid at heart as my passion has only deepened with every passing year. The pic is of my first deer in 2000. Pictured from L-R Shawn, myself, Chris and Greg. The millenium buck. 8pt w/broken brow tine 165 dressed Est. 2.5.
  11. Funny how many times racism was brough up by a person complaining about religion, then trying to trample on people for being white or catholic and proud. And they accuse us of racism??? I do not agree with everything our president has done, but guese what he is OUR president and has my support while in office. His impact on the USA has been negative as far as I can see, unless you are a socialist or communist or may be a arab who hates us... I think change is needed again. Guese I will be labeled a racist, disregaurd the black, asian, mexican/latino and every other race I am friends with... I must be a racist because I do not support Obama, and I do not recieve any pay outs from our gov. I contribute! I feel the free ride needs to be cut from people who can work, I am tired of watching the same crap many complain about on here. WHile I struggle, the person in front of me buys 200$ worth of food with food stamps while wearing a gold watch, necklace and has a I-phone... Yea he is struggling!!! I am not against helping people like many have said before, yet the free loaders are sucking us dry. This guy has 7 kids and calls himself a entrepreneur because he never maried any of the 3 girls and gets X amount of money per kid from our gov. because he never maried...(The girls get the money) He wants 3 more kids so he can get more money... The grandmother calls him the money man!!! Only in america can you get rich off of illigitamate moms... Just another puppy factory out of control... And we support it... OK I am done ranting...
  12. Unreal, just because you lose your job is no reason to go crazy. Like that was the last one on the planet? Again if a armed citizen was present this might not have happened to 7 additional people... I pray everyone is ok!
  13. Make sure you bend your forward arm, this is a big mistake many bigginers make and will cause the string to hit. Make sure you do not grip the bow with the same hand. Like many have said form is everything!
  14. WOW amazing deer. Good luck with him!!! I hope you get him during bow!!! A true brute by any standard, amazing! You guys make me want to move west instead of up North!!!
  15. Plain and simple it's easy to bash someone on tv... We would all like to make a perfect shot I hope. But in reality it does not always happen. They say perfect shot because thats what the producers want them to say and it is what they think happened because they have a downed deer. Ted tends to exagerate things IMO from what I have seen... I don't get to bothered by the terms: harvest or freak nasty or some person giving a graphic detail about tracking. What really bothers me is the word CULL. That word really gets me pumped... Just another word to make killing sound nice... I hate cullings... I do not watch to many TV shows, pathetic programing if you ask me. But every once in a while I see and watch a deer show when flipping through the 100 plus channels... While I am sure many of these people are experienced hunters the reality is these shows have no real representation of hunting in NY. While we do have farms and similar land and food in some area's the general hunting situation is much differant. In so far as being excited when shooting a nice deer... If you would have seen me in 2010 when I came upon my downed deer, well lets just say that after hunting for mature deer for over 20 plus years (Missing 3 so heart braking!) then coming to the reality of getting one, I was overjoyed and could not contian myself and let out a huge YEA! I did not dance around but you would have though it was rehearsed if you saw it... I can not explain how overjoyed I was or how many times I thanked our good lord... Trying to make my own luck and make it happen again. I am on a 10 year a deer schedual right now. (ADK deer one in 2000 and one in 2010, one catskill in 2006 those are all my kills...) I hope to brake that this year by getting another mature ADK buck!!! Or may be a LI buck as this will be my 1st year fighting with the ticks, I think. OK time to go shoot the bow...
  16. Each situation is differant, easy to say on web site that I would take it but I would have to be in the situation at the time to make up my mind. If they seem ok and are in no danger I would let them go. If severe enough do a mercy killing...
  17. My buddy picked up a bow 2 weeks ago and I think he will be ready for this season. Some people have a good form to shoot while others take more time to get good. A bow is a weapon of skill IMO. Some can be good with a few lessons and practice while others take months to be ready. In so far as a year to get ready, that is more than enough time to get good with form and fix any issues. I have my buddy hitting the target well out to 50 yards, he actually shoots better at long distance... 20-30 yards is not that hard to get good at in a short time IF you practice and have good physical ability... Remember the bow you use now is probably two to three times faster than what you used as a kid and makes shooting further easy. (10- 30 yards has a very slight drop) Your old bow might not be as easy to shoot as the new bows. I sudgest getting a bow now, use it, if you can hit a small CD or a little larger than a half dollar out to 30 yards go for it this year... If you are not comfortable with a shot dont take it. Just because you can not shoot out past 30 yards is no reason not to hunt, IMO... Get out and have fun, who knows what next year might bring!!! If you could see how bad some of the guys shoot with thier traditional bows at 10-30 yards you would have no problem using a compound at that distance if you get good with it... Granted with use you get better and fix form issues but how many people do not shoot all year and then a week or two before bow they shoot 10 arrows and say they are good to go. I am not saying you have to be a expert but just because you are not is no reason not to hunt. Most deer are taken within 30 yards with a bow and I see no reason why you can not be good enough to do that in a month IF you practice. And if you are not ready you can always wait till next year... Use at most 3 pins when starting, I recommend one for 20 and one for 30 to start. 10 is just not needed as it is only about a inch lower than the 20 depending on speed... You do not have to be a expert to shoot good, just consistant!!! Go for it you live only once!!! Again if you feel you are not ready you can always wait untile next year... Make sure the bow is set up for you, like many have said it is very importiant!!!
  18. Well I have a week in the ADK to start off with. Sep 27th to Oct 2nd. I will be in the woods most of the day for six days. 3 day back pack in to do some scouting/hunting back a mile or two. At that point I will be hunting Dark to dusk... Plenty of time to NOT hunt when I am at home but when I am in near or by the woods, I want to be in them, could care less if they are moving or not I will be chasing!!! Or at least trying to find some good doe to patern for rifle season... Hopefully I can find some large tracks to chase... As long as I am in the woods, I am having fun!!!
  19. Best of luck to you, hope you get one!!! Looking forward to seeing pictures...
  20. OK I am moving out to West NY!!! Dam nice buck, looks like at least 18 pt, wow what a brute. Traquilize him and put him in moose river for me!
  21. Not sure why they did not fire, a nice center punch was noted on all ammo. This did not happen that often but it was enough to make me switch. Even the reloads I have done never gave my firing pin any problems so I just figured it was cheap primers... All this ammo was 30-06 as that was my first and only gun for many years... I use a variety in the 44 mag and never have issues... Could be the primers are sealed better, our humid climate can mosten the powder or possibly soft primers like you said. Having limited chances at even seeing a deer... When I finally get a chance at a shootable deer, I want no possibility of a misfire, I have enough other things to worry about...
  22. Big Buck Good! Wow! I offer my services if you need help with this one... lol
  23. I use federal premium ammo for my savage 110. 2 main reasons 1) The 165 grain groups are amazing, not a tack driver but dam close! 2) I have had remington, winchester and a few other brands with bad primers that did not fire in my gun. Never with the federal ammo. That said I feel the gun is excessive for any deer under 200 lbs with any grain under 100 yards. JMO... It's a lot of fire power! Another reason I switch to a 44 mag model 94 AE. I wish I had more area were the 30-06 was usefull!
