The exceptions I was refering to were the fact that you can use a rifled bullet in a non-rifle county with a handgun. Not hangun in rifle county... I think most of us understand if a rifle is OK a handgun is too...

I wish I could... But I am not privy to this info...

You guys should hear some of the b/s the school teachers spew at your kids. Hunting and killing and guns are all bad, apparently you did not get that memo... It is spread in every school... Hell you can get arrested for making a pizza into a gun, that should tell you how our schools see hunting and any fire arm. So much for cops and robbers, LMAO. All shooting and bow and arrow classes are being stopped and removed from schools... Hunting is a thing of the past, Modern society does not need to hunt according to them, it's only for crazy people who want to kill. This is the mentalitly they have, don't beleive me. Ask your kid to request information on starting an after school activity that involves shooting a gun, any gun and see how they respond. Tell them it's a survival course, that teaches, fishing, camping, eating wild food and hunting. Record there face when you mention that last word as the expression will change in an instant! Anyone who can not see that social media, tv, movies, computers and the general lack of interest in outdoor activities is a major cause of this stuff. Society is to blame. Now kids do not play outside, they play inside on the Nintendo or Wii or computer game or phone. They spend more time on facebook and socializing than they do in school... Texting, youtube, e-mail, instant messaging. All of these things have watered down our values as outdoors men/women and the teachers in your schools will continue to degradate this by spewing more lies about ethical and moral hunters that are just in the woods to KILL...

OMG just finished all 20 pages. DAM Well I will just say I have been called elitist for not liking guns during bow season, and crossbows draw and trigger lock make it a easer weapon. IMO Bow requires practice, skill, strength and an understanding of anatomy which in my opinion gives the hunter a greater appreciation for its prey. Crossbows entice the "Slobs" as some have been called. Again JMO. Remember perspective... If I own my own land and: 1: Hunted the land with traditional equipment since I was a kid, I will think that is all that should be allowed... 2: Own my own farm and never hunt yet allow hunters, I might see this new tool as a distinct advantage... If I have any injury preventing bow hunting I will welcome crossbows... If I am too busy to practice it is welcomed. If I see a bunch of idiots littering and making a camp fire in the middle of the trail next to my tree stand, I will think getting them into the woods early season is a mistake... Personally I just don't like having guns during bow season but that's just me, just putting full camo hunters with the orange army just seems stupid. What makes sense to one is a puzzle to others... Elitist I am for I agree with Doc and his cause... BLa bla bla This is a no win subject, no matter what I say or any other say we will not agree. Lets agree to disagree... Or did I just start another 20 pages, lol...

OMG! Pathetic... WoW Yea a little late on the story.

The scary thing is if it was intentional... Hope she is OK (Most important!) and they find some real facts and the perp. Unless it was from a vehicle it should be relatively easy to figure out, I mean its a cross bow bolt how far away could the shooter have been? I agree Growalot, see what happens...

I started with a BB gun around 13 or so, first paper route money... 766 American Classic No bird or squirrel was safe... Check your local regulations, my buddy has both his son's shooting. They can start off with a BB gun or 22 both are powerful yet easy enough for anyone to shoot comfortably. Those guns are powerful enough to start with and good for testing the waters... This way safety and respect can be taught for the weapon and its use. Local rifle range will tell you their age limit... http://ocshooters.com/Gen/kidshooting/kids-and-guns.htm Some general info... Generally, it is unlawful for anyone under the age of 16 to possess any firearm; however, a rifle or shotgun may be possessed by a person between 12 and 16 who is engaged in target shooting on a range supervised by a military officer, certified instructor, or a parent, guardian or a person over the age of eighteen designated in writing by such parent or guardian provided the adult has a hunter safety certificate. Here are some of the DEC Regulations... http://www.dec.ny.gov/regulations/2442.html Good Luck!!! PS: Bow and arrow are fun. I enjoy that more than the rifle, just another option, with no age limits...

Ahh Now I see. Thanks WNYBuckHunter. Did not know they allowed handgun in rifled calibers in none rifle counties... We have a few exceptions I see...

That is funny Doc!

I agree with Doc... Just as we are not all created equal neither are deer. I agree with many that most of it is instinct and breed into through genes but to say that they do not reason and have a thought process that puts things into action and causes reaction over time would be wrong. Ever been hunting and feel like something is watching you? You freeze and then see a buck or doe take off... (Your sixth sense working, IMO...) Ever see a deer stop dead in its tracks only to turn around and leave and area while you are hidden, down wind, scent free and silent? Sixth sense or just instinct? May be the deer I perceive as "stupid" deer sense that I will not shoot them. Or possibly no one has shot at them yet... Why do some have better instinct to avoid humans while others will not? Learned experiences resulting in better survival for some? Or just better instinct. The older they get the harder they are to hunt correct? If that is true then they have the ability over time to determine what is best for survival, is that not learning? If they only did things one time and forgot I would agree it's all instinct, but 9 months after deer season is over they still scope out trees for danger... Remembering things requires some intellect... But that could all be simplified as reactions and instinct. Personally I would think they could be as smart or as dumb as our pets. I can not tell you how many times I compare my cats to bucks. They are curious, independent and wild! Great topic!!! I think impossible to prove one way or another. But for me I will just say they are smart because they evade me almost every year... (I need an excuse, please don't take this away from me, LOL.) Arg how many more months till bow? 6 + ARG!!! Again great topic!

WT! that is crazy, besides paying for protection of our natural resources now we are paying for everyone's health care when we purchase this stuff? Great to steal from the hunters and fisherman but lets take away their guns too. Wonder if they are trying to get us pissed off? Crazy politicians figure they will get away with it, why not they have gotten away with taking our rights why not take our money too...

court overturns stopage of Como new law ????
NFA-ADK replied to sweet old bill's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
Since all this started their are no assault rifles that stayed in any store for any length of time, they were all purchased and are now in the general publics hands. Then ammo, where is all this ammo going? Hoarding is an understatement IMO... Instead of making us safer they just filled peoples houses with extra fire power and ammo... So much for making us safe. It is just general panic, I still have the same ammo for one gun that I have used for 3 years, one box of 20... Have not purchased any since October. Hope by this October prices go down and I don't have to give up my 1st unborn child as collateral for a box of 44 mag ammo... Wonder if rationing will be in effect and they will say I only need 5 rounds to kill a deer, don't worry about sighting in, all guns are sighted in at factory and can never go out of alignment they will say... So knowledgeable these politicians. Soda ban, smoking ban, gun ban, no dog walking, no biking, no skate boarding. Wonder if running will be banned in some area's, next walking and breathing. Don't dare make a toy gun like the one you have at home out of a pizza, in school you will be arrested. Love our crazy society!!! Freedom? Wonder when they will ban most fire arms like Mexico then we will be as safe as they are. Arg -
Never really had a reason for applying, except my buddy begging me to join his pistol team... Those TC Contenders look VERY enticing for those long hikes into deep woods. Plus ammo is crazy, at least at the bow range I can recover 95% of my arrows and 200$ for the yearly dues(Plus 2 work days) is excellent IMO. If I get a handgun then it's indoor range cost, ammo, possible reloading, etc. just adds up to a lot more money I just don't have. Rifles work for me... Guns are usually on the money every year I hit the range and my favorite 44. mag is the cheapest ammo (Large caliber) so a few extra shots down range is not only fun it's cheap compared to over 1 or 2 $ a bullet w/30-06. Plus I like the extra range, power and accuracy with a rifle. Still see no need, yet... Good luck to every one who applies! Not to hard to get if you are legit and don't brake the law... And no I am not talking about speeding or parking tickets even though they are looked at that will not stop anyone... Ask yourself this: Do I have a criminal record? If the answer is yes, you will be denied plain and simple... And may I add thankfully because I know a few idiots who tried for a shotgun purchase and were denied, at least that worked... If you are denied and feel you should be able to get a permit, try again you will get it eventually. Good luck again and I hope every citizen that should have a permit gets one!

Hunter/Game Warden relationships
NFA-ADK replied to DeerLogic's topic in Advertisers / Site Sponsors Area
I know many friends who became cops and all were great guys and none had the little man complex, yet I have seen this personality first hand. Police, ECO or DEC are all human, some will have a little man or power complex while others will not... All these jobs come with entitlement and authority, some can handle it while it goes to others head. "Respect My Authority!" Just the way life is. Even as hunters some are ethical and others are not. I can honestly say most of the few tickets I received as a driver in NYS were deserved yet like many here state, it's easer to pay a 25$ fine than fight the ticket... Try to see it from their point of view. Sometimes they deal with some really shady characters and will have a bit of apprehension to them due to that. They could be frustrated at not getting the better job for the day and are stuck in a john boat waiting for some person to bring the kids to shore for fishing time... The boss could have given it to them for not writing enough tickets. The wife could be out of commission with a bun in the oven, or may be he lost his best friend and pet that week. Or he is just glad to be alive after last nights steak out... Point is we all have different things going on in life that can frustrate us. When dealing with any officers you best bet is to be polite, courteous and most of all respectful, 90 % of the time it is returned. The other 10 % could be in the last few sentences, or he could just be a jerk... I am sure you have someone at work who fits this profile just like you would see if you were on the force... The idiotic NO CAMPING tickets I received as a youth were deserved. The 25$ fine for forgetting to fill in the date of my 1st deer was deserved because these guys probably see poachers do it all the time... The one young officer I think would have let me go(Seeing my enthusiasm.) but the vet said NO write him up. Again I can't blame them for doing their job, and as a matter of fact I commend them. All the times I have been checked by DEC, ECO, Rangers or state police while hunting or fishing I have had no problems and have thanked them multiple times for protecting what I hold most precious. But like many (I hope!) I try to follow the game laws to the best of my ability and knowledge. Most recent check was at Otis Pike on LI while bow hunting, we checked out OK and spoke with the officer for about 15 min. They are a wealth of information if you ask the right questions... Always love hearing the stories of lost hikers from Bruce L. the forest ranger that use to patrol Moose River and now is in charge of Cedar river flow I believe. Met another DEC officer in Moose river while bow hunting, great guy and another good source of info, think he was just making sure I was Ok as I was solo for a week with rain every day... Never forget the 1st day Bruce L. the Ranger came to my camp when I first arrived to set up. I did not even get one piece of equipment out of the truck before he pulled up. He said "You have a GPS?" (Note: this was before GPS had maps...) I said "yes why?" he said get it out. I explained it was in the back of the truck and it might take some time, he said "OK I will wait..." So 20 min later I get out the GPS and he changes the map to UTM and has me mark my location. Then he shows me how to read it on the printed map and bingo I see where I am on the map, WOW. I could not thank him enough, now he says "you will always know where you are on the map..." Don't want to go into details on why he was so concerned about people getting lost but lets just say he did not want to drag me out, like the others it was getting monotonous. NFA-ADK -
Very cool!!! Congrats!

Hunting the ADK bear sightings are few and far in between. (We are not actively hunting them...) I think between me and my buddy we have seen 4 while hunting over 20 years all small and we watch them run when they see us. One in Long lake, Lake placid trail by Blue Mt., Bear trap swamp in Indian lake and Newcomb. If you can get into bear trap swamp that's a good spot to scout but access is limited and it borders a private hunting club. I see signs of them in Moose river but they are extremely elusive and rarer than deer. Good luck, they are hard to find in any large numbers but I think that is standard in any "forever wild" type area. Too bad conservation can't see the benefit of varying landscapes. And they wonder why they have to "Control" the population around rural areas... Otherwise just find the local dumps and you will see plenty of them... Just need to find a legal place to hunt in the area, some times the dumps might need some population control too. North Creek I believe has bear signs due to dumps close by. (somewhere on 28 in that area...) Good luck what ever you do! Hope to see some pictures this year of your success!

First Arrest made with NYSafe Act.
NFA-ADK replied to hunter49's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
So your back from Iraq, you survived mortars, IED's and countless attacks from a hostile enemy, thanks for all your help in defending this country and freedom. Now sell your guns and go to jail!!! In other news cops are looking for more kids at school who make a pizza into a toy gun like they own at home called a cap gun, or dart gun, highly illegal now a days... (You can own a dart gun at home and purchase one legally in any toy store, but make one at school out of food and you are going to jail. LOL nice laws for a "free society"...) I notice the swat teams still have 30 round mags. Good for us but not you... No they are not exempt so why don't the feds arrest them? Double standard? It's OK for US to use these guns against the bad guys but if you want to protect yourself against the bad guys, well just dial 911 and wait... Assault rifles cause the least amount of deaths so when some jerk does this "rampage" type shooting with a handgun in a few months.... They will say "why didn't we ban these guns instead of the "assault rifles"? Lets ban them all will be next. When N. Korea bombs NY and Washington D.C. with nuclear armed subs and invades this great country and hacks our system they will have a list of all the "legally owned" fire arms in the US and start the "retraining" of our citizens... (Yes that is out their but what IF???) Or if Mexico gets the list of gun owners on the border they will know exactly which houses to invade to get more guns... (They requested this list...) This country was founded on the right of gun ownership to protect it's citizens against a tyrannical government. THAT is what the 2nd amendment was for. Not for hunting, not for protection against crooks and robbers but in defense of a government that wants to oppress its citizens. When the 2nd amendment was written you HAD to hunt to eat... Their were no phones so self protection with fire arms was standard as police were not always available to protect and serve. (Sound familiar?) Easy to say no one needs a gun when you live with in 15-20 miles of a police station. Response time is less than 10 min at worst usually... But what about the people who live in "rural" area's where emergency response time is usually over a half hour at best... Dial 911 and wait? While that home invader with his 7 friends try to brake in a door or window to rob your house. Forced gun registration so when you the smart ethical people who arrest solders from Iraq and kids in school eating food have no other people to harass you can come after gun owners? DWI kills more kids than all the guns deaths in the US but they will not go after that? Guns are in every 1st person shooter game, every "action" movie. Hell Hollywood not only glorifies the gun they embrace it. Bored johny? Play your video game you will feel better after killing everyone... That's not good? Ok turn on the TV and watch power rangers and play with your gun. Don't let the cops see you as you were arrested for making a copy of that toy in school... And you want people to register with these lunatics? Free society yea right. Cost me a extra 4 + dollars on smokes, I pay extra for ammo, gas, oil, soda and gun registration will cost extra to own THAT GUN!!! Free? NO we pay for all this stuff that is brought upon us by our elected officials who get life time health insurance and benefits. Again it ok for me to have this stuff but I will not go on Obama care because that is not good enough for me as an elected official. I will keep my life long pay and health benefits, give the people Obama care... And they wonder why we don't trust them... Looks like another office gave himself a raise, unreal... Sorry I'm babbling time to go shoot the bow before I continue this rant and get myself in trouble... Just seems to me that society is loosing it's mind and logic has been thrown out the window more often than not. Funny thing is I personally would like to start a family but society makes me second guess that notion. Hammers have been statistically proven to be more dangerous than guns yet they don't consider banning them, wonder why... It would save so many... Cars kill many more people than guns when is this problem going to be addressed!!! Soon enough we will be just like Mexico and have all guns banned and be as safe as they are now... Arg -
God bless these poor guys... Such a shame. Cuomo is a joke, agree totally ants! Ban on shotguns next... Then handguns, LONG range rifles, then lever actions or anything capable of holding more than one round because who needs more than that... They can ban water if they want. I should not give them any ideas. Wonder how many more kids will be arrested for making a toy gun out of food this year... Great laws we have they help us so much so far... How is the soda ban going? We really need to get politicians in office who will help us all out, like getting a lower price on fuel oil and gas would help the entire society out... But they think taxing a extra 4 + dollars on cigarettes helps out? Just seems to me like logic has left the building and most elected officials have lost touch with the general public and reality. Bring any kid that plays first person shooter games "for a extended period" to a gun store and I bet he will be able to figure out a 223 or 308 "assault rifle" and be able to do the same with a 9 mm and a revolver. Yet society blames the guns? I hear parents complain how kids suffer in school yet when home the parent does nothing to encourage the kid to learn. Has to be the bad teacher, its his/her fault my kid can't learn, his disruptions in class, low participation and lack of any enthusiasm or interest has nothing to do with it!!! It's ok, go play a game, I will talk to the PRINCIPAL about your teacher!!! Bless these poor victims and the families, I pray for those that hopefully can survive this ordeal. And for our society, lord we need help!

I always thought the law stated if it was a weapon that shot a cartridge rifle or handgun round it was considered a rifle for all intensive purposes related to hunting. Making any firearm other than shotgun during shotgun or black powder season illegal unless handguns were an exception in your county... They might allow black powder in shotgun only area's but if its bow only then NO fire arms are allowed to be carried on a person while hunting.... Possession of Firearms During the open season for deer, it is illegal to: possess shotgun shells loaded with slug or ball, unless holding a valid license or permit to take deer or bear, or possess a rifle larger than a .22 rimfire (muzzleloading rifles excepted) in areas where rifles are banned for taking deer. In Westchester County and on Long Island it is illegal to use any rifle for hunting, or to carry one afield......................................................................... Q: I have a pistol permit, may I carry my handgun while bowhunting? A: No. While bowhunting during a special bow season, you may not possess a firearm of any description

Nice buck!
