  1. Also worked a summer as mason tender and stacking raw lumber at a lumber yard. A old blind guy worked at the lumber yard stacking lumber and he claimed he could always tell what type of lumber he was stacking just by smell. He proved to be very accurate until one day after lunch we convinced the yard secretary to climb on top of the pile to be stacked and we all gathered about to test the old guy. Well she took it a step further and stripped naked; well, we told him he could only smell and NOT touch the lumber. She laid on her stomach first and he smell deeply and asked if we could turn the board over, she quietly turned onto her back and he sniffed again deeply and proclaimed "I got it!" I know exactly what that is "it's the s**t house door on a tuna boat !!!" and we all went back to work.... Have a safe weekend !!!!!
  2. What was the worst employment you've ever held and why? Mine was as an "transportation specialist" for the radiology department at a local hospital for a winter. I wore a blue smock and had to transport patients from all over the hospital and emergency room to radiology and drop them off, cold and shivering, in the hallway, only to return them hours later to their room. The boss was a freaking witch and I worked every weekend and holiday on the schedule even though we were suppose to "rotate". I was part time with no benefits and worked over 40 hours weekly. It sucked !!!!!
  3. Who is annoyed by theses people that stand along the access ways to malls and openly panhandle? They carry signs that indicate they're broke, homeless or in need of gasoline to "get home".. I was so annoyed at one the other day by the local Walmart as a healthy looking younger woman who was nicely dressed, new designer sneakers and a small backpack was showing a sign "need money to get home safely".... While the wife was shopping I went to the customer service counter and inquired if they were hiring and the reply was they are always hiring. I politely obtained a application for employment from the customer service worker. As we left I had the wife pull over by this woman and I summoned her over and provided her with the application, directions to the service counter and I gave her a pen. I very politely told her that if she was in need of money, they were hiring immediately and she could obtain employment and make as much as she wanted through employment. After blank stares from her we drove away and she declined to take the application. Sad, but I guess she was holding out for a managerial position.....
  4. Pretty sad, but I would believe this didn't happen overnight with him. My kids have been patterned since they could talk, "at 18 I get a full time job, go to college and get a part time job and above all start making plans to vacate the nest'. They are teens now and laugh about it, but know full well it is the expectation and the RULE....follow the rules and good thing happen, disobey the rule and consequences follow shortly thereafter. Since they could walk they've have chores and know I not the maid of the house and if it's not picked up and put away it's my discretion where it goes. A twelve year old found out this winter after two requests for winter boots to be placed in the closet and not by the closet door. When he looked for them in the morning they resided on the porch overnight and were pretty cold. Parents need to learn you can parent like a "commando" while not being violent or hurtful to kids and it's not ABUSE....it's called parenting and as the adult you have the right.
  5. Glad I hunt remote Adirondacks after seeing that; maybe a "self help" group meets there regularly......
  6. I've been know to chase a road kill or two. It's an addiction for sure..
  7. That's not right !! Maybe they were just trying to ward off hypothermia....
  8. Over the years I have had, deer, rabbits, muskrats, beaver and an occasional idiot in the Salmon that insisted on wading chest deep swim on by, but never a black bear in New York. Fly fishing in Alaska I've had bears near me and eagles as pesky as gull surround me.... Hard fly fishing when you have to look over your shoulder every other cast.....
  9. Griffin is a good vise and mid range priced.
  10. It's a great start and soon you have more materials than you'd ever have imagined. First get a good quality mid-range priced vice that rotates and that will help you along. Get reading and there are plenty of youtube videos out there. NICE JOB !!
  11. Best of luck to you and your party, enjoy the experience and I hope to see some pictures soon...
  12. Well fellow deep woods people, spring has begun and the black flies are out !!! Last weekend the snow finally melted away and less than a week later bugs are going strong.
  13. I'd second the West Canada and there are many smaller tribs in your area that certainly deserve exploration and are within a very short walk to be away from the Salmon River crowds. Right about this time the tribs on Ontario are full of "drop back" steelhead that are hungry and eagerly take numerous fly patterns. The browns are staged off shore and may be pursued as well... Use caution in the West Canada as it is a tailwater and releases can be significant. If you like beautiful country and a little travel the Ausable around Lake Placid is a great free stone water for flies and most normally not crowded. Enjoy.....
  14. Buddy, you've been at camp with me; you already know that answer. I pack a magnum, and am only an "A" cup....
  15. I have searched for years to find a chest holster for my large frame revolver I carry while hunting, fishing and trapping. I often carry a pack of varied styles, wear waders (sometimes chest waders) and dress in layers that I put on and take off during the day. A hip holster just wasn't usable for these reasons. I found this chest holster and ordered one and feel it's the best style and quality available for my needs. It's adjustable as muzzle up, down or horizontal. Their made custom fit and delivery was within 5 days from order. Check them out....
  16. Just returned from a week's stay at camp, generally about 18" of ice crystal snow and mud underneath. It was rough going and without snowshoes you "post holed" every other step. It went from nearly fifty early week to 12 above Friday morning and a mini blizzard. All the brooks were blow out to their bank tops as Wednesday it rained all day and then severe winds. Lots of trees and branches down and a house had the metal roof rolled back near Oxbow. It's NOT spring yet in the North......
  17. I'm also so ready for spring. I've tied flies, sorted hunting gear, cleaned firearms, baked and cooked and I'm so ready to get outside.... A few more weeks and watch it will suddenly turn 70 and buggy for trout and turkey season... Hang tough.............we can do this !!!
  18. Back in my day: We had to take the responsibility to gain the "right".........
  19. Back in my day.... You actually had to talk face to face with friends (enemies) and didn't become an electronic tough guy.
  20. Made it up North for a few days, there is maybe 10-12 inches on the ground with slush and mud under. The lakes and streams are opening up and some snowmobile trails are flooded I was told by groomers I ran into to. There has been a winter of ongoing "yo-yo" temperatures and melting conditions. Saw lots of typical deer activity in the normal wintering areas.
  21. It is very sad that those of us that represent these feelings are the unheard minority now. I grew up fearing my parents if I screwed up, I didn't learn to respect them until I was in my 20's. They kept me on the straight and narrow all through my teens. I learned how to deal with rejection, failure and disappointment and wasn't rewarded by monetary belongings. I got praise for success and knew I was loved and cared for but I wasn't shielded from punishment when I crossed that line. I now parent 3 teenagers and in this world it's tough. It's sad when my child is being bullied and the school councilor tells me they can't tell another student "no, stop that behavior" because of fear the offender's parent will call him upset. Seriously that was his answer, I guess he rather deal with this parent calling him upset when he allowed a student to degrade my daughter in front of him than to tell the other child to stop. Absolutely ridiculous and maddening !!!
  22. Seafoam is the way to go, I use it every time in my small engines (2 and 4 strokes) and they all run great after sitting idle for extended periods.
  23. Where is every one else located in the woods? Cedar+Canvas and I are both in Morehouse, Hamilton County... My camp is on the western slope of the mountains so I get heavy lake effect snows. I can drive East a few miles and the accumulation drops significantly.
