Impressive to say the very least....

Any of you "Big Woods" hunters been up North and know the conditions? I hope this small break in the weather gives the wildlife a small reprieve and ability to bounce back for the lengthy arctic chill we had. Great for ice fishing, bad for the deer population.....

The Adirondack park area has many opportunities with state lands open to hunting. The woods are rugged and can be remote, behind my camp I could walk about 75 miles and not cross a roadway or marked trail. It’s beautiful country but you need to be prepared in backwoods travel and camping in winter conditions. Siamese Ponds is one such area of many. Part of the lure is the remoteness and planning of the trip .

Bacon and cheddar cheese are what I consider a gift from the Gods and nemesis of cardiologists. You are my hero.

I consider my Ford a truck, unless it’s used during intoxicated operating and then call it a motor vehicle.

That store is the best, especially between, tourist seasons when the parking lot is empty.

It was -18 yesterday in the am and that wasn’t the wind chill temp. Hope 2018 is s good year for my fellow deep woodsman !!! -
Not sure I have an actual favorite read. I enjoy local history, Alaskan trap line adventures and Adirondack interests. Charlie John’s in Speculator has a great selection of local books.

The set of National Geographic maps for the Adirondacks are the best, very detailed and rugged. They would be a great reference for you to find areas to your liking.

There are many areas as you describe. I would suggest you decide how remote you wish to be and study some trail guides or maps of the upstate area. A popular area is Simese Ponds in Hamilton County near the Warren County border. It is remote hunting, great beauty and few deer but offers the tent hunting experience.

Integrity is taking the correct action whether or not you agree with the law. Lets hope this young man receives this weapon and learns all the responsibilities that accompany weapon ownership.

Good idea. Best wishes for the new year and your Dad.

We, as a community, should hold ourselves to a high standard. Hunting, trapping and outdoors sports are under attack each and every day here and in Canada. Anti's drool over such negative publicity and a chance to shed negativity on us all. It all comes down to integrity and honor, doing the right thing and following a law(s) you may not personally agree with, but follow it anyway because it's the law. A public forum SHOULD not be a venue by which we brag or discuss breaking the law (baiting/shooting after dark/harvest over limit). This type of discussions sheds a very NEGATIVE light on all sportsman. When one is in the woods it comes down to one's personal choice to follow the laws of the land. If you choose to openly break the law then you accept the ramifications of being caught. Very sad the direction some of these posts have taken......

Pistol Recertification Site
Salmon_Run replied to hunter49's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
Major frustration from recertification site. First attempt: page expired before completion Second: after complete listing all my handguns it wouldn’t save Third: saved and then was “pending” for four months before “accepted” . Unable to print the confirmation however. Very typical New York State. -
I used to subscribe and after the first year it was same old articles.

Ive never hunted West of the Utica area and I heard or read someplace bear was open at the park. I believe it was in one of the New York hunting newspapers It’s at camp so I can’t say which on it was. Congrats to the hunter who harvested a beauty.....

Thank you for the info...I'm at camp alone very often and for extended periods. My family thinks it will be a wise investment.... Happy holidays !!!

WD-40, a drift pin and hammer; just ensure that you are lined up and the auger didn't turn partially on the shaft and your pounding away and the other end of the sheared pin can't come out

Nice to hear you have a "back up"plan in the woods. How do you like the Delorme ? I often at camp alone for several days at a time and have no cell contact within miles from my cabin.
