  1. I got spooked when I had a set of "eyes" following me. No cats in the area, so I wasn't sure what it was. I turned around a couple times in prob 30 yards or better I saw 2 green eyes. It happened a couple of times till I figured out it was an owl. I threw a stick and it flew off. Thinking about it now I still shiver. But, I am targeting a bear this fall that is pretty active at eating whatever is around. I'm a little nervous about walking in to climb a tree, even though I know they are supposed to be scared of man.
  2. I turn on and off as needed. they do have some flex, i haven't found them to be stiff when walking.
  3. I had to post this to my wife's FB when I saw this. I waterfowl, bow/gun for bear and deer, then squirrel when the deer are gone. My fall calendar only "appears" to be open. Those empty dates are reserved for hunting, anything else has to be written down or it doesn't happen.
  4. I got a set on ebay for $80. I think they work great. Of course the took a bit to get used to, not as bad as breaking in a new boot, just a different feel. Personally I hated using warming packs because they scrunched my toes. They seem to have lasted the season just fine, if they go the few years they say they should, I think they are worth it. One of the biggest reasons I would get out of a treestand early was cold toes, that's why I picked them up. Nothing against wooffer, but I prefer comfortable to bearable, which is what these do.
  5. I don't think its too late to set it up. I would suggest brushing it in good as opposed to just putting it up. But the bigger key is making sure you can shoot out of it. Esepcially from different directions. I didn't do that my first time out with mine and i ended up slicing it with my broadhead and spooking my deer. For what its worth, I only hunt out of mine with a rife now. Its much easier to maneuver and whatnot.
  6. ty for info. been waiting on this.
  7. Thanks for the link. I'm trying to match a new 28" matte finish barrel to my turkey gun. The gun is in Realtree APG, but for whatever reason, Remington doesnt make a barrel with that pattern in 28" so it would be mismatched. IDK why they don't. Cheapest place around that will do it is GM for $70, but with a 7 week turnaround. i guess a black barrel on camo stock/reciever won't look that bad. I know the birds won't care.
  8. I thought about doing this, kits run about $100, which you could do a whole gun+ with. Just curious if anyone else does it and has tips.
  9. This fall will be my first time hunting a deer with a shotgun and I need to know if I need a rifled barrel or not? My turkey gun is a 23" barrel, which is what I would be using, but I don't know about getting a new barrel or not? Any thoughts/suggestions?
  10. i use it. i dont think there is anything better.
  11. Yeah tell us about your place.
  12. On Friday, Sept. 14, at 10 a.m., the Game Commission will hold a public, computerized drawing in the auditorium of its Harrisburg headquarters. At that time, the agency will award the 65 elk licenses, the first 19 drawn will receive an antlered license and the next 46 drawn will receive an antlerless license. PR Newswire (http://s.tt/1jaP0)
  13. After this summer, its about time. Although I did see that the weather is supposed to be 92 on Friday, not exactly goose hunting weather, but I'll take it anyway.
  14. Welcome. What is there to hunt in the Bronx?
  15. I just wanted to offer this review by OL on broadheads for your thoughts. http://www.outdoorlife.com/photos/gallery/hunting/whitetail-deer/bowhunting/2012/08/best-broadheads-mechanical-and-fixed-blade-?cmpid=enews082112&spPodID=020&spMailingID=4714846&spUserID=MTUzNjQwOTM1NDIS1&spJobID=283145436&spReportId=MjgzMTQ1NDM2S0
  16. There are two different "groups" hunting Letchworth: the regular hunters in the section generally north of the Castile entrance and those who will be putting in for the special archery only lottery in the southern part. I am in the latter group. Last I talked with Meg the biologist there, they said they had no plans to move the special archery lottery up from nov 1. They may extend it later though.
  17. Your right, WNY. Moving from TN, I was thinking that the KY and TN herd was done in the 90s. I think Wisconsin's herd was around the same time. . My thought on the whole thing is this: Conservation. I think as hunters we ought to do all we can to improve and restore the environment and wildlife. I'm not saying hug a tree, but TR set an example that I think is worth following. If we can do something to bring back elk I would be all for it. It probably would impact some whitetail land, but in a larger perspective it would do wonders for the media/general population to see that a group of hunters brought back elk. I don't think it will ever happen in NY because of politics.
  18. I could understand not wanting to wait, but depending on how many are released, it could be as soon as 5 years that a lottery could be set up. I think if 50 were released in the Adirondacks, there could be a huntable heard fairly quick. And I might be wrong, but I think that there would be plenty of room for them there. For what its worth, the PA elk are starting to rival the western herds for the top spots in the record books. If you look at top 10,half are from the east now. And that's from reintroducing in just the past 20 years.
  19. Their range in PA has not made it to NY yet, as a herd that is. It is pretty tightly contained in their "elk zone" something like 40 miles south of the NY border.
  20. My guess would be there isn't enough continuous range for them, with the exception of the Adirondacks. Even there, I imagine with as many private landowners there are they would be against it. Elk can be fairly destructive to crops and landscaping. Still, I would do whatever I could to bring them back. I did a search and found that there was a push in 2006 to bring them back that failed. However the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation (I'm a member and their HQ is in my hometown, definitely a sight to see if you can make it to Missoula MT) did a feasibility study on NY and found that it would be worthwhile to reintroduce them. RMEF has successfully reintroduced them into Ontario.
  21. Well, I am the same area, but I have seen 2 hens at different farms. One had 6 and the the other had 7. They were just about the same size as mom. Seems to be looking like a pretty good year. I went down to some hunting areas in the the Southern Tier and saw lots of evidence of birds, more than usual, but no actual turkeys. All I can say is I am thrilled for the light spring and summer. This past year hurt.
  22. If it were during hunting season I would take her over a healthier deer. Outside of season, I might call a GW if it was bad enough. I tend to let nature take its course with most everything.
  23. i played trumpet in school, now all I play is my iPod. I did take up the harmonica recently, we'll see how that goes.
  24. I agree that marketing brought me to Rage, but performance kept me in them. Shwacker works on the same mechanics as I can tell.
