I agree. But I'm actually working on arranging for one of the instructors from my son's hunters safety course last month to talk to the boys about archery.

Thanks Burt! It's supposed to drop into the 20's tomorrow night. I've sat in a tree-stand for hours when it was in the single digits. I think I can handle the 20's in a subzero bag and cot. It will be a heat wave. Lol!

At Schiff Scout Camp in Wading River with my son and his troop. It's our annual thanksgiving campout. This year my daughter is coming too. We make Trashcan turkeys, take nature hikes, trail rides and just hang out by the campfire. It's going to be cold tomorrow night but being a hunter it's no sweat for me. Subzero sleeping bag, coleman cot and thermals will make it nice and toasty. The things we do for our kids! I was thinking of bringing my bow being that I have a DMP for 1C but I don't think gutting a doe in front of the troop would go over very well with the scoutmaster. Lol!

Meijers was the bomb! Loved going there in the wee hours of the morning while in Law School in Michigan.

That was both funny and stupid at the same time. As soon as he saw it still breathing he should have put another round in it. I was afraid that could have been the buck I shot last weekend when i saw his rump go down not knowing whether i would have found him dead or not. I had another round chambered aleeady.

Thanks guys! Took day off from the office and spent the day with my parents and in laws processing both deer. Total meat over 100lbs. So far made about 40lbs of ground meat mixed with some pork. 20lbs were made into venison burgers and the other 20lbs into 5 lb meatballs for chili. Need to freeze then vacuum seal. Rest was cut for stew and 4 huge prosciutto roasts. Finally back straps were cut up, sealed and frozen. Gotta go back tonight to seal the rest.

Malverne Firefighter killed in Hunting Accident
Deerthug replied to Deerthug's topic in General Chit Chat
The fact that the one who did it is a "former" firefighter at the department makes me wonder. Maybe some bad blood between them??? I know how tight knit these departments can be. Hoping it's just a stupid accident. . . -
Just saw this on News12.com. A Malverne Firefighter who was hunting up in Oneonta was killed in a hunting accident. RIP. MALVERNE - A Malverne firefighter was killed in a weekend hunting accident in upstate New York. Members of the Malverne Fire Department have purple and black bunting on the building and their flags are at half-staff in honor of 52-year-old Charlie Bruce. Members say the father of two, who lived in Franklin Square, had a passion for firefighting, golfing, smoking cigars and hunting. The chief says the shooter that accidentally killed Bruce was a former firefighter at the department and is very distraught over what happened.

I've spent long hours in the stand/woods. I'm just more regular than most people I guess . . . 5:30AM . . . like clockwork.
-
How did I miss this 3 page thread on pooping in the woods? LOL! I Never had to go in the woods except for peeing off my stand. Always go just when i wake up especially when I know I'm going to sit for hours on the stand although I may have to sit longer on the crapper until the urge comes.

Great buck and story. Congrats to you both. Sent with Tapatalk on my Samsung Galaxy 4 -
That really sucks. Inconsiderate a-holes. Hopefully they got their fill and won't be back. At least they did not trespass, use your treestand or blind and steal your camera.

I hear you. During bow i saw nothing, only squirrels and chipmunks. Opening day I saw two, a doe in the morning and an 8 pt in the afternoon which caught me by surprise. Both are in my fridge waiting to be butchered tomorrow and he's already at the taxidermist to get mounted. The deer population has either gone down in my area or they are hiding really well and moving at night.

2013 HNY Gun Hunting Harvest Thread
Deerthug replied to WNYBuckHunter's topic in Rifle and Gun Hunting
After sitting in my stand for about 1 1/2 hours Saturday afternoon (11-16-13) at about 4:00pm I hear what I thought were antlers crashing about 100 yards behind me. I hit my rattles and blow a few tunes on my grunt call. 15 mins later I hear crunching coming from behind my tree stand. Thinking it's a squirrel I don't pay it much mind so I start glassing the corn field. A minute or so later as I'm glassing the field behind me the crunching gets louder and louder. As I put my binos down I see a buck coming out from the brush behind me. At first I only see what appeared to be a four point. Then I see 3 on one side. As I consciously make the decision to pass on him he comes out a bit farther all the while he's looking at me. Suddenly I see 4 points on one side and my adrenaline started pumping. I slowly put my binos down moving ever so gently as he continues to stare at me trying to figure out what I am. He looks away and I finally get my binos down. He's starts looking at me again. Now I see 8pts. He turns away and I get my hand on my Remy that was hanging on a tree hook. He turns back to me. I freeze for what seemed like an eternity with the stock of my Remy on my thigh. He turns away and starts walking away from me at 35 yards from my tree. I get my Remy down and the scope to my eye and safety off in a matter of 3 secs. He stops quartering away and I squeeze the trigger. Just as I squeeze the trigger he starts to turn further quartering away and the next thing I see is his rump go down and he drags himself into thick brush. My heart sinks. I felt like throwing up. I waited 20 mins and then I get down to start tracking him thinking I wounded him and I'm going to spend hours looking for him. I start tracking him in the thick brush. I chamber another round just in case but I come upon him about 20 yards into the thicket and he's already expired. I kneel over him and thank our good Lord for the second time today. Here he is in the field after dragging him about 50 yards and waiting for my BIL to come with his tractor Here he is capped out.- 35 replies

For the last month prior to opening day in SZ in Columbia County during bow season, I did not see a single deer anywhere near my set ups despite seeing them on trail cameras. But this opening weekend I scored a doe on Saturday morning at about 9:00am and an 8pt a little after 4pm. It was cold Saturday morning and warm during my afternoon sit. The only deer I saw were the two I harvested. There were other bucks and does that were being run near my BIL's set up but nothing near me. As far as Yotes are concerned, while we were finishing gutting my buck, we heard them howling - lots of them! We usually hang our harvested deer on a wooden arbor just outside the house but we ended up tying it from the neck as well as its legs and hung it horizontally (sort of like superman flying) to keep the deer away from the Yotes overnight. I don't know if the weather or the moon had anything to do with my harvest but according to what my BIL saw the Rut is in full swing.

Wow! Congrats to your uncle.

Congrats and what a great story! I never experienced such an opportunity with my dad as he was not a hunter. Cherish the time you have with him.
