Finally broke the ice (in more ways than one) yesterday . It was very very cold but I was in an elevated blind out of the wind for the most part . Never heard a shot until after 8 am . Somewhere around 10:30 a deer came out of the thick area and started up the field . It was over 100 yards and my binos were fogged up so I didn't even pick them up . It appeared to be a good size doe . I was hoping it would stop somewhere in an opening between the trees . It did but it was facing me .I hadn't taken a shot all season and took a head on shot while the deer was facing me . It didn't run but walked off slowly . I thought I had missed and waited about 15 minutes before going to check . I didn't see any blood where the deer was standing but when I got to the thick stuff where it had gone in , I saw blood . Thank you SNOW . I could see big blood spots where it had laid and then a trickle here and there when it moved . There were hoof prints all over in the thickets so it was deceiving . The deer was wandering all over . I saw where it went into the neighbor's field so I called him and told him what I was doing . No problem . When I walked into the woods my son said he saw a deer acting funny and saw that it was bleeding but it was way to far for him to shoot at . I decided to sit in a stand for a while as I was pushing the deer . My son said that he saw 5 deer come out of the thickets and meet up with another 5 in the back of the woods. After a half hour I got down and picked up the trail again . I found the deer - a Spike - He was 50 yards north of my SILs . Dragged him onto my SILs property and then had to make the long walk to get my ATV . All that walking and I was whipped . Got the ATV and sled and was able to get into the woods without burying the thing as it was wet back there and in the pond field as neither drains . Took the deer to my son's home . We skinned and cut it up after supper . It was frozen but we got it done . Lost the back left quarter as there was a lot of coagulation . And ... to think that I passed on 4 pointers and shot a spike but it was a good deer to get out of the gene pool . Here are a couple pics of the Spike , the view of where he was when I shot him and a picture of the buck on the trail cam .

According to my FitBit , i took 15, 689 steps today and went almost 7 miles . That darned spike gave me a workout ! He zigged and zagged and went all over the place . As much as I hate snow it was a blessing today but that spike left some pretty good blood to follow !

The doe that I shot was a spike. Took 2 and a half hours to find him. Going after the atv. I hope I don't get it stuck My phone clock was off by 1 hour. I think it is okay now . Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk

I did something I said I would never do. Shot at a doe head on at about 100 yards. I hit her lost the trail and found it again. She lost a lot of blood but keeps on moving. My son spotted her but couldn't get a shot. He said she was bleeding front and rear. Going to wait an hour before tracking her more . Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk

We used to put up an artificial tree . I called it our JB Hunter Tree . Then a got rid of some varmints for a tree farmer . That was it ! The wife wanted a real tree from then on . My job is to bring the tree in , set it up and put the lights on it . My job is done until it's time to take the tree down .

Christmas tree sucks up a lot of water . Bought a pre cut Douglas fir tree at Wilberts last Friday . Brought it in the house Sunday afternoon since nothing good was on TV . Mixed some of the tree preservative with a gallon of water . Since Sunday I have poured 3 gallons of water in the tree holder and no , it doesn't leak . After sucking up all that water I hope the tree doesn't Pee !

I think it would be a Widower maker in Growie's case .

P.S. My oldest son hunted his favorite spot in Mendon all day and didn't see any deer . This is where we see a crap load of deer all summer long .

I believe the State and Counties out source the Road Kill removal . The people that pick them up usually wait until there are a few in a given area which makes it more cost effective for them .

I was set up in a spot in the swamp in Walworth by 6:30 . It was quiet . No ducks or geese and it was cold . Sat there until 10:30 as I had to get home to shave and shower and get ready to go to my granddaughter's chorus concert in Mendon . Never saw a thing except a few squirrels . I pulled the cards from 3 cameras and had previously done this on Dec 2 ( 5 days ago ) . When I got home and downloaded the cards on two of the cams , there was one single doe picture and both were during the dark hours . Nothing has been traveling through the area . No doubt it's probably due to the fact that the water hasn't receded and the trails are pretty much under water . The most excitement I had in the am was when I was walking through some high grass and scrub brush . I was walking in the dark with my green light on and there was a racket on the ground . I thought it was a Walmart bag or some other blowing in the wind . It was a small Blue Heron . MY 1st thought was that maybe because the grass was high that it couldn't take off . I was going to try to grab it but had seconds thoughts about doing that . I figured it might panic and both of us would get hurt so I left it alone . Let Nature take it's course .

Happy Birthday ! Have a great day .............

Going to give Walworth another try in the am . It's forecasted to be 28 degrees with a real feel of 21 degrees . I plan to hang out until around 10:30 . I have a grand daughter's chorus concert to attend at 1:30 in Honeoye Falls . Saturday , I will give another try in Geneseo with my oldest son . Another cold day . Hopefully there will be some deer movement . I don't think the guys that lease the adjacent property hunt when it's below 50 degrees out .

This doesn't show the addition on the back of the house which is 14' X 20' . I have been on the roof on the upper level in the back and figured if I fell off onto the addition roof it would be from 6' to 12' . On the edges , it's over 20' .
-
Thanks for the input . At 76 years of age I have kinda had it with the top roof . I have a 34' fiberglass ladder and that sucker is heave and a bit difficult to stand up . Years ago my wife thought it would be nice to plant some honey locust trees and some clump birch . Leaves galore ! I can clean and flush the lower gutters but the upper ones are no easy chore . I was able to flush the rear upper gutter a couple months ago but couldn't get the last 9' using a jet wash and a long pole as the downspout was clogged . I figured a way to get the heavy ladder stood up in front but again , the downspout was clogged . The groud slants away from the house so the ladder wants to tip . So , $140 and no broken bones and no hospital visit .

I saw an ad on Groupon for Gutter Cleaning for $79 . I called the company which is located in Rochester . Because of the distance we agreed to $100 even . They showed up today and started the work . The guy told me it would be an extra $40 because they had to snake out the two upper down spouts . I wasn't surprised that they needed it as they were not draining much water at all . Plus , I had them cut off a few gutter guards that needed it . So it cost me $140 and my ancient butt did not have to go up on a ladder to do the chore . I have approximately 180 - 190 feet of gutter . The down spouts that had to be snaked are each at least 20' long . Has anyone ever hired someone to do this ?

I remember taking the kids to Lolli Pop farm . You put money in a feed dispenser , turn the crank and the goats would all head toward toward the noise .They were conditioned to the sound and knew there would be feed there . I would imagine it would be quite similar with a feed dispenser for deer or other wildlife .
-
Try that while hunting with a bow during archery season .You set up in the food plot and I will setup at the bait pile and tell me they are equal or that there is no advantage .
-
Let's say you plant a half acre food plot . The deer could come in to feed anywhere and not always the same place . Most food plots are even bigger in size . You have to guess where to put your stand or blind . Now instead of a food plot you put out a corn pile or a pile of apples . The deer will come to the pile and there is no guessing as to where to have a stand or blind . They will come to a specific spot . If you shoot a deer in an apple orchard , no problem . If you take a pile of apples and place them in the woods , it's baiting . Hunting near an oak tree is okay but don't go out and pick up a bunch of acorns and place them by your stand . I don't have a food plot and I don't bait and I think anyone who says they are the same is full of crap !

Awesome looking buck .......

I was avoiding telling about my boring sit yesterday . I was in the double chair blind by 6:40 am and stayed there until 11 am . Nuttin ! Left and came back around 1 pm . Checked the trail cam out by the ditch . No deer pics on there in about 5 days . Stayed until sunset . I should have taken a book to read .

I should have stayed home and raked leaves. .... Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk
