  1. Maybe the bear smelled the guy's oats and honey granola bars that he had in his backpack .
  2. I havn't hunted any chucks in a few years . I shot some for farmers when I first retired then stepped up to a 223 . The most I ever killed in one season was 112 . If they made it to their hole , I didn't count them . I trapped a couple last week for an elderly woman from our church that will be 100 in a couple months . I have never eaten a woodchuck even though they are probably cleaner than a rabbit .
  3. If you want to see the Political Posts , you have to come here . Better to have it here than eliminated .
  4. New folks wouldn't have seen it if you hadn't posted it . No big deal ......
  5. As soon as I opened it , I realized what it was and watched the whole video again . That had to be a neat experience ! I bet that doesn't happen very often .
  6. Yeah , someone posted that last year . I wouldn't want to have that happen to me . I don't carry extra underwear in my backpack .
  7. Never owned or shot a semi auto large cal rifle other than in the Marine Corps . Too risky to shoot in flat country . I prefer my single shot 25-06 . What is a follow up shot ?
  8. Van was the voice of the Bills for a several decades . May he rest in peace !
  9. Got this in an e-mail https://youtu.be/ZA9EW2UKDDQ
  10. My "go to " knife is a Ka-Bar Little Finn with a 3 5/8" blade . I have had it for about 45 years .
  11. My sister in laws ex boyfriend lost his Buck Knife after field dressing a deer . I took my metal detector out the next day and found his knife in the gut pile .
  12. The Gerber knife has a ball on the end . I carry that and a couple other knives . I take a couple of those red plastic flag plastic things that you get at Lowes or Home depot and lay on the ground . When I set a knife down , I place it there or on a plastic shopping bag that I will use to toss my field dressing gloves in when I am done . In 50 years of hunting , I havn't lost a knife ..... Knock on wood ! Thanks for the replies !
  13. I also use the Butt Out Tool . It makes for a neater job by not getting any crap inside . https://youtu.be/3yf7n5pftv8
  14. Thanks , I will give the sternum to the butt a try next time . I have a Gerber Metalius blade that works like a charm slicing down the body once an incision is made . I find that doing it the other way can be somewhat difficult getting pulled away brom the belly to make the incision . I have been using a Gerber Metolius E-Z Open blade to up or down the deer . It has a ball on the end and works real slick . Almost like unzipping the deer .
  15. I was never taught how to field dress a deer .. I learned by reading how to do it . I core out the butt , tie it off then make an incision in the stomach , being careful and cut toward the sternum the cut the other way . I saw a video where the guy started at the sternum and cut the other way . By starting at the sternum he wouldn't be chancing poking the guts when starting out . Does anyone do this ? Have I been doing it wrong for 50 years ? Never too old to learn !
  16. I am hoping that my bow mount camera will at least shot a deer's reaction to a shot . The hard part is remembering to keep the bow up after the shot and following the deer with the bow .
  17. Awesome pics . Thanks for sharing !
  18. Here is a test shot from my stand in Pittsford . I just shot at a clump on the lane . Camera was set at 4X which is the highest setting for the Wildgame Encounter . Not too bad for a $35 purchase . https://youtu.be/5Y4c56YwT3w
  19. I had an EPIC camera that my wife bought be a few years ago . Was worthless on a hat . It had a foam piece that came with it and I mounted it behind my stabilizer on an angle bracket . It sounded like a 22 going off when viewed . I had a hard time telling if the camera was on or not . Shot a doe and thought I was taping but the camera was off . I have since bought a Wildgame Encounter camera . It came with a bracket to mount it behind the stabilizer so I will give it a try this coming season .
  20. Not sure if they still do it but Irondequoit had a program they started a few years ago . They had been paying out several thousands of dollars for off duty police to do a Bait and Shoot . Then they allowed Bow Hunters that passed a shooting test / qualifier to hunt specific areas and there were restrictions as to where and how they could shoot the deer . Anyway , it was a money saver for the town .

    Hello

    Welcome to Hunting NY
  22. I had some of the exercise bands several years ago . You could hold them and go through drawing a bow motions . I would sit in my office and use them a few times a day a couple months before Bow Season . It helped quite a bit .
  23. Since you stated you can't use a climber , I would go with the ladder stand near a well used trail . I personally prefer to have my stand around 15 - 20 yards away from the trail and have had good luck doing that . The stand should be placed for easy access where you can approach it without being seen . Those 2 man ladder stands are nice and roomy ... quite comfortable .
