Maybe i'm getting cheap. Maybe it's the obama economy. Maybe i'm just getting smart. Anyway, i got tired of buying field point targets and i've been wanting to make a target like the ones in the archery shops where they are made using fibrous materials that you can pull out with two fingers. In prep for this glorious target i have invisioned building, i've been saving old stuffed animals, dog beds and thinsulate type insulation. Well today i had an idea and picked up a suitcase from goodwill for 6.99 and filled it with my stuffing. It worked like a charm.

I got into some while scouting the new 70 acres a week ago. Not sure what type of nettles it was. Had long pants on ( the light weight turkey hunting trek-lite stuff) Following the creek bottom, i found myself surrounded and tangled up and the stinging started. Slowly made myself to the creek and jumped in to my hips to try and relieve the itch and burn. Then i had to get back out and through it to go home. If someone had a video of my splashing around rubbing my legs with this agony looking expression on my face, it would have looked pretty funny. By the way, i couldn't believe it but there were large patches of this stuff grazed down by the deer i'm assuming. Can't believe something would put this stuff down their throat.

Ahhh, thats some good looking dark brown dirt. Almost forgot what that looks like. Checked on apples sunday and i would say were at about 10% of normal years output.

Great pic twelvegaj. That buck seems like he's trotting right along and yet that Tasco picture looks pretty good. Just a slight bit of blur there but not as bad as alot of cams. That pic is from 3 weeks ago, pretty good growth and nice body. -
When you see a big deer, there will be no need to be doing any calculating. There is no mistaking a 140" deer or better. For those interested in making the P&y or NYS books or for those wanting to shoot 3.5 yr olds or better, it's those 120" to 135'' bucks that can be tricky to judge in the excitement of the moment. Admittedly, I have a bit of a quick trigger and i also am easily satisfied with any buck i decide to shoot so I've mis-judged a few, but they have never disappointed me.

I do like to use the 80" for 2.5 yr olds and 90" for deer that look to be 3.5 yr olds. That is the inside spread + both main beam lengths + both mass measurements. Remembering these measurements allows you to just concentrate on tine length when a deer shows up. (2.5's ----16"+32"+32"=80") (3.5---- 18"+40"+34"=92") If you know these figures then you can quickly size up the lengths of the tines on one side and double that. Add the two together and you'll be pretty close. I don't think i've ever sized a deer up like this before i shot it, but it comes in handy when your back from the days hunt and are discribing the deer you saw on stand.

Nothing but youngsters for me today. Should have moved that one cam last week but was in too big of a hurry. It's in a differents spot now.

Did a google search for ''scoring deer on the hoof'' and found a bunch of helpful articles.

Slowhand. Someone in another thread was talking about adjusting the quality of the trail cam pics so i tried to adjust yours. Hope you don't mind, but i wanted to get a better look at that buck. -
Not saying their the most natural looking colors but you can clear things up to get a better look at the deer sometimes. Play with the color, contrast, temperature, brightness..

Here is yours and fixed..

Here's what i did with yours

Nice pics Paula.. I can feel it.. This is going to be your year. I'll take my pics and download them to my computer and if there a bit off i will pull them up and use the "fix" to edit the pics. Adjusting the brightness and contrast and coloring can many times give you better results.

Looking to lease land in Ontario County
dave6x6 replied to kgun12's topic in Land For Sale, Lease, and Requests
Not a lease. My hunting partner just purchased the farm to the north of his property. You would not believe what the fella who had been hunting it offered to be able to continue to hunt it. Crazy money. The answer was still no though. Nice fella, but we manage and hunt the properties. -
These turnips have a recomended plant date of july20-aug1 so i knew i was a bit ahead of schedule but when i put my plan in motion around june 22, it was raining. The extended forast called for dry weather through the 24th then rain was expected that evening and for 4 straight days following. I'm not kidding, that's what they said... So i figured i would take this great looking forcast and put them in the ground on the 24th. If the forcast was correct i'd be looking like a genious. As for Brassicas, no i don't put them in this early but i did a 1/2 acre plot about 7 years ago in June and it rocked. Best Winter Green planting i've ever done. Just never had the guts to do one early again to see if it was a fluke.

So the 2012 Archery catolog showed up this week and just was wondering if there was any gear that you just can't live without this year. Or if there is any new items out there that caught your eye. I'm pretty well set but i do have a new 70 acres that's gonna need some tree stands. My wife hates Cabelas..LOL
-
Just checked the 10 day forcast. 0% chance of rain 9 of the next 10 days. Maybe something next Wed but even that said chance of showers. Unbelievable...Has not rained a drip since i put the tubers in Six days ago..

Nice buck Slowhand. Had high hopes for my latest card pull this week. Set up on a trail paralleling a creek that i see bucks use quite often. When i set the cam up, i bumped a fawn out of the tall grass so i figured the spot would be good. Anyway 56 pics. 1 rabbit, 4 of momma and about 30 of the little guy and thats it. Cute but not really what i hoped to see.. -
Do you have any stands that are close to each other?
dave6x6 replied to regulat0r's topic in Bow Hunting
Phade, your point on ladders is pretty much what i was getting at. It's not the ladder but sometimes the way they are hunted. They are usually bigger platforms and i find myself fidgeting quite a bit more when i'm in them(especially a double). This with their generally lower hieght and distictive shape MAY educate deer a bit by your nieghbor, that who knows what the heck he's doing in his ladder. Hang ons allow me to have more of a unique presentation that deer haven't seen or recognize as easily. Just a theory totally based on paranoia, but it's hard to argue that mature deer recognize past dangerous experiences and will avoid questionable situations and back out. Not saying i don't ever use them, i currently have 9 of them up, but there located mostly gun areas and my best bow sites are all hang-ons. -
For me it starts with the most basic premiss in this case being flawed.. That is that it is the govt. responsability to make sure every american has health care. No i'm sorry but that is not a role of the Federal Government. That is an entitlement. Maybe at the state level the people can decide whether they want their tax money to go towards that but not on a national level. History has proven time and time again, that there is nothing the feds can do better or more efficiently or without levels of corruption that the private sector can't do better. Eg. postal service, social security, medicare, energy ect... There are plans out there but they never get reported on because we have already accepted that national healthcare is the way to go and that will always mean political fighting, devision and waste. Common sense de-regulation, open the market to compitition across state lines and allow the people to shop for their insurance like we do now for autos. And allow incentives and tax credits for low income people to purchase their own economy plans voluntarily. Affordable healthcare for all. All these will lower costs and spurr private industry growth and good paying middle class jobs.

How much you figure an 80 acre lease in Ontario County is worth? Just deer, bow and gun? -
Woofer, with all do respect (because i am on your side on this obama thing) Sits in trees is actually mostly correct on the Republicans basically inventing the individual mandate but it's not entirely true that the heritage foundation were the masterminds behind the idea. And Sits, there were some pretty important reasons for this position at the time. It was devised as an alternative to Hillary care which put the mandate on the employers with the idea of forcing them to provide coverage for all full time employees. It was also to discourage the free-loader effect. And it was proposed as incentive based ,voluntary enrollment. Not mandatory comprehensive coverage, or pay the fine, or go to jail voluntary enrollment.. Big differences. Read Forbes: The Tortuous History of Conservative and the individual Mandate. Also, it should be noted that many true conservative think tanks have opposed mandates since the beginning.
