  1. Geno some lands are still pricy I know theres a great 32 acre parcel but me its land locked with a dirt road access.Theres 135 acre parcel with alittle swamp close to farm land heavy hardwoods and open areas there a 51 acre parcel off rt 52 outside walden about 15 minutes from Newburgh off the thruway and etc.
  2. I dont do mounts except for myself I do my own.Yes I am open from bow through muzzleloader season check out my facebook page HB venison processing.
  3. Nice plots good to see someone giving back some- thing to our wild game.Don't what clover you planted but whitetail institute has several forages that stand up to heavy grazing they produce tons of forage for your land look into their power plant product. This product is well worth the investment. But your going in the right direction.I had the same problem at first over grazing so I plant a variety of forages.
  4. My first thoughts were to manage my deer herd yes. Most outdoorsmen mignt think first about the deer.If you do a total assessment of your property or anyone elses then decide what you want to do how your gonna do it and stick to a program it benefits almost every living thing on that property even the plant and trees.I have built a rep of going in and looking a piece of property over and deciding on what do where to do it.Trimming woodlands a around your nut trees acorns, beechnuts, etc.will help your trees produce more nuts on ave per year.putting in a small pond or water scource keeps animals close adding a hydration area.providing a sanctuary area is vital to make all animals feel safe and close to this should be your food scources. Foodplots and fruit trees.I have learned all this and much more simply by reading up and experimenting with my property.I have no P.H.D. or degrees its all in the field learning being told that you have to have a biologist, agronimist, and land management company is hogwash trust if you do anything it will help and if your in your scout stand in late august and watch a couple of squirrels chase each other around a foodplot or a couple fawns play around the water scource or watch a bald eagle land in your observation tree that birds use cause its the tallest tree by design to look out from then you ll feel pretty proud of what you ve accomplished.
  5. Your in dutchess not far from my shop 70.00 for the processing.I offer jerky, sausages, brats.I also make corned venison.Anyway willing to help I have a cool place to hang your game and be careful transporting your game watch the laws on transporting especially if your partically processing before leaving the field.
  6. I am around walkill but I am a land manager and I have been practicing Q.D.M.A. for awhile now.I actually go into landowners properties and help setup thier hunting property.I topographical look at the lay out look for food and water scources, woodlands, fields, explain what should be done how and where to do it.wheres the best tree stand setup etc. I just know that the 5 pieces of land I look after and hunt are looking good.I can say alot of people I talk to in our area have the same concerns as you.I have a facebook page if your interested its hb venison processing.Look me up
  7. With the season a week or so away the outlook for lower 3j looks very promising. On all 4 parcels of land I care for and manage including my own some very large bucks including a very large wide 12 pt have been seen on one property.I actually have a nice wide 8pt yearling on my land he's been munching my clover plot and nows moved to our fall winter greens brassica plot not that its come in.Anyway lower 3j looks very good. Anyone else hunting this area feel the same way.I just hope that my neighbors allow this nice yearling 8 pt to walk another yr or so. I feel he's got great potential.I think he's the son of a nice 10 point I took last yr.He was only a 2.5 yr old.
  8. Thanks for the feed back its nice to see some would be willing to partake in making a difference in our games habitate. If and I say if anyone was serious about helping our games habitate and nutritional needs and values.First and foremost clean up the lands.Keep it that way second plant forages developed for wild game animals.I use whitetail institute and biologic products.Whitetail Institute has sample paks cheap which come with a dvd they are the real deal. Just remember thier minerals and other ground products are illegal so just look into their foodplot blends. But everything is designed for deer but every game anaimal and bird on my properties benefit from the products especially turkeys. Also leave the animals a sanctuary on your property if you want them to stay close give them food, water, and a place to feel safe. open up any oak groves trim out smaller trees and undergrowth around them you ll get better acorn production and more consistancy. I also have been using tree spikes and plant food.if you can plant a few apple or pear trees be sure to protect them while their young during tougher winters.I actually screen mine in during winter months.Deer are not the only animal that chew on a tender apple tree bud. I have caught woodchucks and other smaller animals doing this on my cams.Water sources are vital to a deers overall health and conditioning. There is a small deep pond on my property and its in the perfect location it starts the southeast side of my sanctury area.I dont have a tree stand with in 200 yards of that pond or area.Take your time get to know the land see what benefits are there. Then decide what you want to do and use the whitetail institutes alpha rack plus and clover are great products to start with you ll see a difference the first yr.
  9. Not a big fan of any lawlessness Not well liked in my area by the outlaws.Had my share of being threatened. But I guess I feel like if you need to break the law then you need to get caught.I ve caught guys with spot light and hard hats on my property.at 11 at night ya were coon hunting with a 10 piont buck in tow.Anyway the states just not tough those guys are hunting again 3 yrs later caught one of them again. So I asked the judge what happens next time well we increase the fine maybe some jail time but we really don't have the resources to go beyond our means in making it so the law breakers never do it again.Plus well why stop the fines and monies made from repeat offenders.
  10. Hopefully now some of you sportsmen have read some of my replies on topics.I am an avid outdoors- men.I have spent lots of time learning and implement- ing what I have found and applying it to my properties. Mostly lands I have befriended landowner. My main reason for writing this is that hopefully reaching out to others in the importance of Q.D.M.A.It works if you apply the methods and follow through with them and truly understand and believe that your efforts not only produce better quaility animals and show the true signs of biulding a better stronger hunting area. This is for deer but its limitless as to the game animals and birds on a given property.I have literally had to chase woodchucks out of foodplots to get them to move.My oak grove is to notch my apple grove has an abundunce of fruit yr after yr.My foodplots produce tons of forage yearly not just during the hunting seasons.Maybe you would say its extreme but I want to give something back. When I started this it was for deer but seeing all the other animals and birds thrive on the property has been a big plus a great bonus.I have birds that some hunters have never saw in the wild.Last week I had a bald eagle perched in a tall locust tree waiting for his dinner. I have several partiredge on my property.I know I am not far from the ulster federal preserve outside walkill but not to many landowners are seeing the things I and people I allow to watch on the properties are seeing.I am just letting everyone know hunt 50 yrs and enjoy it but hunt 50 yrs and know that wow I made a difference in the time I put in and it shows. For on my land stand the best game query in the area.
  11. Oh ya one more thing if your gonna plant something plant a plot buy some foodplot blends from a foodplot company whitetail institute, biologic etc.Give the deer some nutritional supplement after all your havesting them so why not help thier well being at the same time.Example if you shoot 2 deer and 20 or 30 deer use your plots then you have helped a whole herd.Plant a foodplot source that comes back yr after yr.I just feel if your gonna use resources to pull deer in isn't it fair to give them something to benefit the whole herd I've done it for 20 to 25 yrs and the deer in area are thriving I had a hunter on the property last yr shoot a fawn doe that weighed 95 pounds my son took a yearling doe that dressed.over 130. check out my post on the what hunting means to me thread and you might understand where I am coming from. Its great stuff and it works.they do it all over the country now and its still very new so if your young or really want to improve your hunting and your deer herd take the time make the effort and you will see.
  12. Its only baiting if it become unnatural leave it standing.
  13. You gentlemen have doneyour home work great info yes acorns become the main staple in a deers diet during the acorn drop season. almost being the only thing they will eat.A deers instinct drives them to eat the most nutritious forages at the most opportune times of the yr. I planted a oak grove of 24 trees most red and pin oaks about 20 yrs ago then putting in a small apple grove next to it about 3 or 4 yrs later. my finding were the deer especially the more mature does and bucks didnt travel to far there was water close by and lots of food I notice alot less activity in the foodplots several hundred yards away especially yrs of really heavy acorn and apple production also in summers with less rainfall or cooler summer nights tree and plant spikes help keep the production numbers up some producting more fall food production.I have a biologist friend who has studied my methods and compared them to natural seasons and her finding were very helpful in learning how to make the food sources produce more forage yearly keeping the deer closer and most of all healthier yr to yr.I have taken 150 plus acres and worked it into a very efficent ecosystem this took over 20 yrs and in a very pressured hunting area of lower ulster county.I actually have several landowner join me and work their respective properties to.
  14. I really enjoyed you post its great to hear from a person with so much time and experience and love of the outdoors. Like you I have a great love and admiration for the outdoors. I to love the peacefulness and sanctuary of it.I will be 50 next season.I have recently be joined by my 17 yr old son and enjoy sharing that time with him teaching him all I have learned. Its been a lifetime of greta enjoyment and dedication to give back to something I truly enjoy. Its great 36 yrs getting my start from my dad and brother inlaw. My dads 84 now and no longer joins us but I keep our time afield dear to me and close to heart he never really hunted but he still taught me so much from a farmers stand piont.I learned to manage and shape the land in which I hunt give back to the game that I also hunt and respect.Build relationships with landowners I have helped and guided in building their own great piece of the outdoors.I have become a land and game manager learning everything I can about ecosystems, big and small game,Birds, predators, Impacts that desease and natural extremes that challenge these birds and animals every day.I also know that at anytime through manmade or natural causes it could all be taken away.If I could give one thing of advice to anyone who love this pastime it would be to cherish this great tradition, respect its boundries, when given the chance give something back, plant a tree, plant some foodplots or hedgerows, build a small pond where water would help a change the quaility of the environmental area.Or simply just sit in the enivironment and ask yourself how luck am I to be able sit here and enjoy one of gods greatest creations for it is you and I who have the ultimate means to make it better or destroy it.Its our choice I hope we all chose to better it then make it go away.
  15. Yes thats everything I have heard also I didnt know of the D.E.C.s shoot on sight policy thats a releif.I have a freing in texas and thats what they like to do kill the pigs.
  16. Geno I dont know you but upper orange and lower ulster counties around newburgh and new paltz offers some nice hunting properties. I actually collect lists of land for sale for people looking for properties for outdoor activities.Hunting, recreation, camping ,getaways, etc. The thing I work for is that I become sort of a caretaker afterwards.I would post, patrol, and set up the property.I go in scout setup foodplots, tree stand setups, work on environment rehabilitaion for better quaility habitate and so on and so forth. So if your interested I can help. I have references from land owners and police agencies as to my reputation.I taken seriously by poachers, trespassers, and law breakers. I have several parcels of land close to me now for sale ranging from 30 plus to over 100 acres for sale.Let me know.I would first establish a personal and professional meeting to show I am truthfully who and what I say and to develope the bond needed to build a successful relationship.
  17. Yes I to beleive we all should find a way to get the youth back in it. So many young people are not interested because of video games cell phones computers.Another big problem is even if you get a young person involved its become very hard to hold on to or find a private land owner to allow you to hunt his or her property.
  18. I have been following this developement for awhile now. I dreaded the day They would be here. The problem with these pigs are they are heavy breeders can fight of most predators and carry deseases. It was just a matter of time they are very aggresive and destroy crops.I feel that the state should allow a year round open season shoot on sight type approach. They must not be allowed to get a foothold hear it could be catastrofic.Just read about the stories from others states and you'll understand especially Texas.Anyone who feels that this would be good and add another big game animal to our hunting query is wrong a bad idea. The state should never allowed the canned hunt outfitters to import them to start with.I beleive the state hasn't taken any action yet so I say its up to the land owners now and hunters in the areas where they are to take action.I know I am looking into finding a place in sullivan county to go and hunt them.
  19. between my son and I we harvest between 4 to 6 deer a yr. mostly betwwen 110 to 150 lbs.I have 2 sons and 5 daughters I divide the deer up between us after making my sausages, brats, and corned venison.I only save some roasts and backstraps for jerky during the off season.I usaully use it all by september. But this season I have some sweet italian and breakfast sausage left along with a pak or 2 of ground and some tri tip steaks.
  20. I am not and never will be a fan of the crossbow. Its a personal thing.Plus in my area where theres not much of law inforcement present its just another way for the outlaws to cheat and poach.Remember this is just a personal situation I am sure some will really enjoy it. I just have a hard time every yr with poaching and lawless ness around my area in ulster county. We have antler restrictions no one cares.using shotguns b=during muzzle- loader seasons a big thing. But the biggest thing is on the Friday night before rifle I can count between 10 to 15 rifle shots within a half to a mile around my hunting area.
  21. Hi sounds like everything I read tells me one of 3 things. your property sounds like a good setup. So with that in mind. Someone stated earlier that someone might be planting some- thing more attractable.Or your on your property to much to many camera's to check get just a few 2 or 3 and set them up better. Stay clear of bedding areas or sanctuaries.Invading these areas is a major no no.Try different foodplot menus I use double cross and alpha rack plus from whitetail institute on my 155 acres and put out just 5 trail cams I use cams that i can chack from my computer or phone 2 of these would be better then the less expensive ones you have to check. Also a big if is if someone knows a neighbor who might be or friend whos jealous might be playing with your setup. I have had foodplots for over 15 yrs taken many wall hangers but have always been careful of everything I do from plot setups hunting partners (my son).Stand locations. Most of nobody knows what I do.I have a police officer hunting with me that helps.I under no circumstances invade bedding and sanctuary areas.this is very important they need to feel safe somewhere on that property.Bucks especially with avoid an area like the plague if they feel threatened.Sometimes even the rut doesn't help.8 yrs is a long time to not take a buck off your property and I see your only seeing small bucks.sounds to me like their being driven away.Good luck and change things up abit try a few new things read through everyone posts take notes.I speak from experience. So do most others oh one more thing if the orchard part in still producing apples try pruning the trees cleaing the lanes and get some double cross planted in there it will work.I planted 10 trees 15yrs ago and have a plot through and around it and it produces my biggest bow bucks every yr.
  22. As far as it being illegal not really sure but thw law requires that you possess a carcus tag for a deer hit by a car.As for using a tarsal gland yes have done that and had mixed results.I can tell you that one season I used a tarsal gland from a buck that I processed for another hunter and it was amazing to see how other bucks reacted the gland I used came from a big mature buck. Most the bucks I saw were actually intimidated by it.
  23. Scents are very effective when used at the right time and amounts. The idea is to fool a bucks noise into thinking he's on a doe.late prerut and early rut the scents used pro- perly at the right amounts are almost full proof.Usaually I use a doe in heat drag to fool the bucks into this trap I work the prerut with drags lightly soaking a drag within 100 to 50 yards from my stand circle it once hang the drag about 15 to 20 yards out in a shooting lane.If he looks to long and doesn't pick up the doe he'll take off.So stay close to your stand with this setup.Another is mock scrapes at the beginning of the rut.Make the scrape using a stick from the area.dribble some doe in heat(matrix doe in heat or tinks 69) and some dom buck urine about 15 to 20 yards like the prerut setup drag the doe in heat drag around the scrape and to your stand this setup really works. But the bucks once locked on does wont leave til he feels confident he's bred her.So get him before that once their in lockdown its hard to pull them away.
  24. Oh by the way Diamond is probably the best youth or starter bow. Just thought I'd add that in.
  25. I wonder sometimes that theres just not enough parents can do or that kids like to get envolved in hunting or the outdoors. I am blessed that my kids love it.It also makes me glad when another parent intro- duces a child to the great outdoors. Its a great thing.Let her know thats shes got lots of supporters and all the best of luck.Judging by your pic shes ready to go and that is where it all comes from just shooting and enjoying the time together.
