  1. Saw a spike with 2 doe this morning. Had this wide joker pass by one of my stands 3 days ago. Hes heading back the same way he came out 10 minutes prior. Ate some clover and apples then headed back to bed. Time stamp was 6:30am, so hes heading to bed before its too light out.
  2. I shot one a few years back only because i find it to be a real trophy in NY and only a few are shot each year in my entire county, this one happened to be the only one shot in the township that year. In my eyes a real NY trophy. Shot her high up on my property and thankfully was able to get the UTV right to her. If not for the UTV not sure what i would have done, she was 230lbs and theres no where to really grab them to pull. By the way lots of corn out my way and that bear tasted fantastic. Plan ahead on how to get the bear out before you squeeze the trigger and yes the meat needs to be cooked very well to avoid getting trichinosis. Would i shoot another , doubt it. That one NY trophy taken off my property is good for me and doubt it can be repeated.Made a rug out of mine and love it.
  3. Fall harvest at the cabin, picked the last of the squash, gords and pumpkins...
  4. I agree completely, all rights or nothing. Dont want to have to deal with any type of bull$$it in the future or if and when you want to resell.
  5. Think again. Theres better deals to be had, you can find land in central NY still for $1,500.00 an acre. Just need to look around. Sometimes timing is everything.
  6. Again, what was the criteria in determing best vs worst. Again, deer hunting has been fantastic on my back 40 for myself and family and those stats dont sway me in the least. Guess we should all leave NY fot greener pasture because the stats say so.
  7. Thats only relative to your notion as to what you feel huting deer to be. You cant think that your statement is fact for all NY hunters. For my NY back 40, hunting deer is awesome!!!!!
  8. Wow where do you live, Costa Rica? Dont have any thickets that even closely resemble that. Must hold a ton of rabbits.
  9. I have 2 on 40 acres, but could really use another one or 2 more. 4 would be ideal on my 40.
  10. I can guarantee you, cross a trail on my property with a smell (like smelly rubber boots) that a mature buck has not be accustomed to and he will pick up residence and move on. He may not move far, maybe to a neighboring property where he feels safer or he may return weeks or months later. Most mature bucks that feel threatened in the least will move on. Yeah right tame wild animals , tell that to sigfried and Roy. No animal is tame, stop feeding that animal and watch yourself be its next meal.
  11. No difference to me, i dont trap.
  12. Are you referring to Pete Richards of Vermont?
  13. Actually quite the contrary to all the trapping shows ive watched...they boil traps, use gloves when setting traps, use scent in and around thier traps etc.....Sure some predators are easier to catch then others, but atleast from what ive seen scent control and scent use plays a huge part in a successful trap line. I dont trap so i could be wrong or maybe the trap shows are a big gimmick scheme as well. To each thier own, but for me the biggest obstacle i see in killing wild deer is the ability to elude their keen sense of smell.
  14. Theres a big difference between animals that have become accustomed to humans then tramping through the woods on opening day with boots that stink of rubber. And lets face it, muleys are not the brightest of deer species on par with a rut crazed moose. Yes with time any animal will associate a smell or behavior as a way to get free food and may let thier guard down. Dont think thats what the OP was trying to get at nor do i think the OP will have the time or desire to have his local deer herd appreciate the smell of rubber. Apples to oranges in my opinion.
  15. Water doesnt help me, i have a stream that runs the entire lenght of my property . In addition i have several springs that pour out the mountain sides. I have too much of a good thing, which does nothing to help me pattern them over water.
  16. Yep, my nephew had boots that smelled aweful of rubber. Rubbed mud all over, let them sit outside for a few days and odor was greatly deminished.
  17. Cam should not be set up in bedding areas or areas that you may think are prime bedding areas. My Cams are soley set up over mock scrapes, trails leading to food/bed or on my food plots. I never venture near bedding or sanctuary to put a cam. Access to cam is just as important as placement of the cam.
  18. 15 to 16' is all i ever needed...damn some of you guys going 30 plus feet is insane. Cant imagine going that high to kill a deer.
  19. Cake them up with mud, leave on for a few days then rinse.
  20. Clean my clothes with just plain ole water, let them dry. Place in a big tote for the year, with lid open slightly. A month before the opener i place a couple pine branches and close up the tote until the opener, a day or 2 before opener I'll place everything outside to air out. Always spray down with scentblocker going to stand and on stand. Has worked for many years. Doesnt hurt to step on a wild apple going in.
  21. A plot that size could not sustain deer nor regrow fast enough even with a minimal deer population.
