  1. Actually global warming will effect the population especially compared to marten. Marten is a deep powdery snow animal. That takes continued cold temps. They primarily burrow for food as well as hunt above ground. Small rodents make up a large portion of their diets. Fisher becasue of their larger size do not do as well in deep snow. They are top side hunters. With warming of temps, what happens to the snow we do get? sun and temps and nights below freeing = crusted snow. good for Fisher and not good for Marten. that always kept their ranges somewhat separate. There was and is always overlap but as we get warmer the marten get pushed further north and the fisher have better climate to thrive. (or at least that's what I've read...lol)
  2. A guy I work with lives down there and said it would be a good place. Depending on the count he really suggested calling ahead. He didn't think there was any type of isolated "room" to house a group
  3. Open Trapping areas for them seem to be expanding in NY. Still a free permitted activity though that requires pelt sealing. I just got done watching some trapping DVD's about them and martens. I've got a few on our hunting lease and was going to try for one this past season while up there hunting but I got the permit too late. I will say that it was an odd year for the number of grey squirrels. I should say lack of grey squirrels. There were entire day sits where i didn't see a single grey and they are normally like rats around there.
  4. NY is not alone. I worked with a guy from NH. His grandfather left him a mountainside plot of land when he died. He got married and they went to build a house on it. After moving in they noticed that if they took down some more trees they would have an unobstructed view across the valley of MT Washington. What a beautiful view out of the house. What they didn't realize was that local governments can tax you based on your view. His tax bill went up $10,000 based on the view alone and he ended up having to see the property becasue he couldn't afford it. Welcome to America.
  5. sounds about right. Very easy run north or south and I think there are cut overs that the western folks can take. I'm still in...lol. Can't resist a chance to talk hunting, meet some folks and have a few drinks.
  6. look at the layers menu on this. You can turn different labels and such on and off. It maybe why you didn't see what you were excepting.
  7. the DEC interactive map is great for showing all state land and even access and parking spots. it has Sat imagery and topo layers too.
  8. not sure who is going and where they are coming from. If it is 390 corridor and west folks maybe somewhere along 390 would be more central so more go. I'm in either way.
  9. I could probably make either date. Let me know where.
  10. I haven't used the one I have for air travel but I get your concern. They are very easy to break down if you choose to go the gun case method. the entire limb assemble on the ones I have been around come right off easily with a few bolts.
  11. I've got a 5x7 utility trailer with these road tires on it. My father use to use it to haul his wheeler up to camp. now it just sits at camp. our area is very hilly and muddy and I have pulled it easily with wood piled over the 18" sides totally full. I have two 500cc 4x4 wheelers and they both pull it with no issue. Personally I wouldn't get hung up on the tires for how the OP posted he was going to use it. to me versatility is a good thing and being able to take it over the road if needed but small enough to utilize in the woods is a plus.
  12. March 14th at the Double tree inn in Henrietta at about 4:30 would be a good spot to see you all...lol
  13. Dodo bird. Basically anything slow and not very smart with piss poor defenses. Nah never mind, that can't be correct or the libs would have been gone long ago. lol
  14. @Belo one thing I would share with someone that was against the coyote hunting or the contests (which take a very very small percentage of the take) is that when all efforts fail to control a population, mother nature will surely step in and there is little we can do as a 21st century hunters that are as cruel as mother nature. I can't imagine how lingering and painful a death by exposure would have been for this one while he was literally scratching his own fur off.
  15. Honestly on this contest, nothing. I have been out of the loop on may topics since about Christmas. I didn't even know about it until this thread. I did sent the Holley Fire Dept donations two years that they had their contest since I couldn't get up there to take part but that was a few years back. I don't even think they have it anymore becasue of the opposition and fighting the lawsuits
  16. I agree. It's always good to get a gut check on what you believe and how it effects or influences others. There has been some really good threads over the years I have been here but it's usually only good for about 5 pages. Then there will be a downward spiral...lol
  17. Chris, I hope I didn't come across as saying anyone not supporting "these" is equal to the anti's. I don't believe that. I DO believe that while we may not agree with the activity and it is legal we should be actively supporting their ability to do it. I also think we need to voice our concerns about what others are doing (even if legal) that could cause us all issues. I was never into trapping and honestly it was something that didn't really sit very well with me becasue I was never brought up around it. I decided this last summer that I wanted to learn about it and took the course and have read and watched a ton on it since. I got beat up a bit on a trapping Facebook page becasue there were some posting pics (it is a closed group but who really knows who is in the group) that I thought were in poor taste and could be used to shed the activity in a poor light. I questioned them. Perception is a lot when trying to expose someone to anything that they know nothing about. Things I believed about trapping were just dead wrong becasue I didn't know any better. I can see a need to try and have those not involved with an open mind until someone can shed light on what we do and I can see how the perception of these contests could close someone's mind. What those against this contest don't seem to realize is it is likely these same participants would have been doing what they are that day anyway. Bag limits are still in effect. It isn't like game laws are suspended for these. The last "squirrel slam" they had out buy us I didn't participate but did send a donation. I can see the social atmosphere draw of these. I can remember how every bar had a buck contest too. There was a entry fee, prizes and usually the ones I was in had a party associated with the end of the season. It was social and didn't effect the population or harvest numbers.
  18. If my renovation side job was done and I was paid I would own this. I've held and fired this model. Sweet rig. GLWS
  19. A friend of mine has this one. Really nice since it folds up and wheels out of the way. It's more money but I think worth it. He hauls his wheeler on it and then hooks it to his wheeler and off he goes.
  20. It's pretty east of you but I know guys that have had good results here. http://www.tarjac.com/pricing.html
  21. 3 of my favorite quotes about the subject of sitting on the sidelines. It doesn't make you bad or wrong to sit and do nothing But it does allow those against us to move unfettered. "When bad men combine, the good must associate; else they will fall, one by one, an unpitied sacrifice in a contemptible struggle." "Bad men need nothing more to compass their ends, than that good men should look on and do nothing." “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men should do nothing.”
  22. and imagine living in a state like CA where they just totally banned trapping. I can't wait to see the coyote issue they will have in 10 years. The tax payers are going to love having to pay the same guys that were willing to do it for free to just get rid of some. And since it will be nuisance work it is likely that the furs will not be allowed to be salvaged and utilized. How is that for being "GREEN" and properly utilizing a resource. I am kind of getting a kick out of the anti fur demonstration popping up all over with all the demonstrators wearing their synthetic fabrics and being anti fur. Next week they will be out marching against the big oil and chemical companies wearing a product made by that industry.
  23. If I can ask some clarification. Even with this policy you can get sued, right? With NY's General obligation law why would you want this policy? What protection does it give you that the NY law does not?
  24. usually they are a pretty effective fund raiser for whoever is hosting them.
