The Official Haven't Killed a Buck Thread
Culvercreek hunt club replied to Five Seasons's topic in Deer Hunting
Well I finished off the regular season with no buck. (other than the one I thought was a doe with the antlers broken off). SO in the regular season bracket I am a big goose egg. Luckily that tag rolls over to the late season. Be giving it a roll this weekend with the smokepole. -
This snow seems to have shut down every deer here
Culvercreek hunt club replied to luberhill's topic in Deer Hunting
They are definitely on the food and moving later. They are also going to be concentrated to areas that had less pressure. I was in a blind last night on a piece that had not been hunted all firearms season. I had a button buck at 330ish and then a parade of 17 does out into a clover field at about 415 followed by a little 4 pointer. Then at about 430-435 another parade of 22 does and fawns came by single file at 40 yards. it was pretty exciting seeing all those deer. It's been a lot of years since I have seen a single group walk by like that. -

Depends on where the neighbor is. Baiting is a function with the act of hunting. Feeding deer in some areas of NY had some court case that made it not an issue. Was it Sullivan County? -
I am shooting these in full length 350's and a 250 gr head. https://www.3riversarchery.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?&Store_Code=3RA&Screen=PROD&Product_Code=6811X

High temp cheese for sausage
Culvercreek hunt club replied to Team Hoyt's topic in Game Recipes / Cooking
There is not No need for expensive high temp cheese. We have no issues with a sharp or extra sharp cheddar. We add our own peppers so we didn't need pepper cheese. At a cooking or smoking temp of 180-190 the sharp doesn't melt. We buy in 3# blocks and toss chunks in as we grind the venison for the last time. Our hot dogs we grind 3 times so the cheese gets added with the last grinding and then we put it through the hand crank paddle mixer for adding the spices. -
I was looking into it myself and it appeared that most use the chest freezer with the lamp to maintain the temps. I also was unaware that it wasn't the "beetles" that did the majority of the eating but the larva so they need to be a breeding colony. My wife would kill me, she isn't buying into the whole skinned drying animal smell in the garage from the trapping skins...lol

I am hoping that is no time soon

I picked up two packs from 3 Rivers. One was lower and the other went from mid range to 300 I think. It at least went to 250 becasue I ended up there for tuning.

Nah, You set the hook and those fish are caught. If they don't see the results you have shown them it will just be incentive to try harder.

I guess form as pygmy said. It won't get much softer shooting that that one. Good luck. -

Al. 11-87? semi auto right? of 870 pump? -
Short chains can give the animal more leverage and can pull more straight up which is not the direction the anchor system is the strongest. I can't tell from the quality of the video but many trappers run 3'-4' and even add shock springs. The shock springs to two things. Make is "softer" on the foot when they pull and it takes the hard jerk out of the line so there are less pull outs. A long chain is better of the anchor angle but gives the animal more of a running head start to pull.

In Maine they actually can trap bear but a 550 is NOT a trap that a bear trapper would use. It is an ideal coyote traps size but as you see here they can hold well.

Fit on those guns makes all the difference in the world. She may be better suited with a youth configuration in the stocks. I have a Winchester 1400 in 20 with a pretty short vented rib barrel. That thing was a bit small for me but made a good close cover gun when I was training my Springer on grouse. It is only chambered in 2-3/4 but is a pussycat to shoot. Dad had a Deer slayer in 12 when I was young. I had NO desire to shoot that the second time...lol. But his 1100 I loved to shoot. -
This seems to be the issue I see with any of the animal cruelty laws I have read. In PA the sections on this offense is extremely detailed. If you want to see what I mean take a peek. It's down to how a farmer can support the udders on a cow and not milking for over 24 hours to how an animal's ears can be docked. https://www.legis.state.pa.us/cfdocs/legis/li/uconsCheck.cfm?yr=2017&sessInd=0&act=10 Then all the way at the end it says this. § 5561. Nonapplicability of subchapter. (a) Game law.--This subchapter shall not apply to, interfere with or hinder any activity which is authorized or permitted under 34 Pa.C.S. (relating to game) or the regulations promulgated under those laws. When you read 34 Pa.C.S and see what evidence of hunting is and the definitions and prohibitions in this section of the game law I can't see how they will make a case. If nothing else comes of this I hope a couple things. They get these evil bastards under someones microscope becasue they are going to be an issue in the future and maybe they can get the laws refined to address what we have seen here.

I agree they need to be dealt with and I can see just what you said about the tide pod challenge. Seems like this new generation is good with attention whether it is positive or negative attention. I am just expressing caution on how quickly we cuddle up with the anti's in a rush to pass a law or change a law. I have never seen a law yet that was any good when crafted by emotion.

Almost every animal cruelty law has an exemption for hunting, trapping and fishing (including the new Federal law). Unfortunately this was conducted while in the act of hunting from a legal perspective. These are some sick demented a holes and I'd bet future serial killers so don't get me wrong on that point. Here is my concern and I may be accused of wearing a tin foil hat. With something this depraved I am certain that the hunting, fishing and trapping communities as a whole would rally squarely behind opposing this behavior. SO we actually are on the same side as the animal rights groups and push for a legal action. (I can't seem to find anyone that can tell me what law would have been actually broken though). SO this gets resolved and we fast forward. I see many making fun of the opossum stomping comment. How many know of how many trappers dispatch the animals they catch? I am CERTAIN that many on here would really be set back to see the common practices. I've seen guys on this forum and other hunting forums talking about going up to a wounded deer and slitting it's throat as opposed to shooting it again. Dozens and dozens of activities that many of us utilize in hunting, fishing and trapping would be viewed by non participants as cruel. That is why these laws have had the exemptions. As depraved as we all think these actions were, we had better be careful hollering side by side with the anti's for legal action. They have proven how adept and willing they are bringing outcry against us.
