Our Biggest Problem as NY Hunters...
Culvercreek hunt club replied to sits in trees's topic in General Chit Chat
From DEC Regs means to pursue, shoot, kill or capture (other than trap) wildlife and includes all lesser acts that disturb or worry wildlife whether or not they result in taking. Hunting also includes all acts to assist another person in taking wildlife. -

Then have at it. The only time they (DEC) would take exception would be if he was actively assisting in the hunt. Example----you are doing deer drives and he is a driver that is not directly with you. THeir view is he is taking part in the hunt and should be a licensed hunter. I think there may even be some quesions like this in the DEC question and answer part of their website. I have taken many people with me. -

I am not prepared to say Uncle just yet. I will keep pushing it, taking kids out shooting, fishing, hunting. The only sure way that we go down and totally loose this tradition is to admit defeat and do nothing. -
still waiting for my firenocks to show up. They are a bit pricey but I hae two friends that have had great luck with them. the color selection and options are crazy. 3 hunting nocks with 3 practice nocks ran me 60 bucks. I did buy the high impact batteries though. they have different blinking functions. I got the steady burn for 30 hours and then it dims to conserve batteries. they have a 17 second burn and then it goes into a blink function to conserve batteries.

Nice buck...now onto the 2011 tags -
My grandfather di it as well. They did however shoot the rabbits that the ferret chased out. I remember him telling the story about leaving the coat and going back the next day to pick the ferret up if it caught one in the hole. I also remember he has the tendency to stretch the truth but he swore when thee was more than a few of his buddies together they would each hold a burlap bag over rabbit holes when they sent the ferret down. He said shells we at a premium during depression and WW2 so a bag ans a club put dinner on the table with no expense.

I am sure different areas have zoning restrictions. You have a requiremnt for discharge distance and certain area have laws against discharge inside certain villages/towns/cities. SO you may have to go out more rural and then the land may not be zoned for a business. that would require a variance and that means open comment periods. I am betting the thought of a range is great but right up until the point that it is built next to the property you have that you hunt on....lol. That is the problem with comment periods. I am betting a range would be like a landfill. a lot want then and see a need but no one wants it in their back yard. Then let's take a walk on the hazardous material side of it. lead...lead...and more lead. I actually worked on a project that had an old Govt range on it. you wouldn't believe the cost of screening and disposing all the lead fromthe soil before the building could be built. millions. I would love to see more of them but in a state so against start up on new business I bet it would take a lot to get it done. -
Nothing quite like taking a new bow or gun into the field for the first time. Good luck with it

Everyone is in a much better mood Elmer....the season is right around the corner...lol. No more cabin fever!!!

Well the tax rate can't be variable but they can play with your assessed value. But you can contest it and there is a legal avenue to do it. You don't even need a lawyer. I actually did it on my house when they raised my value. all you need is a little homework and recent sale history for very similiar properties. They have no choice but to reassess. You can take it down a legal road if they don't. It took me two trips to get it done but I was able to reduce my assessed value by over $30,000 dollars. This was before the housing crash so I imagine they are more resistent now because many folks have houses not worth what they were and that would have a huge hit into their revenues. It is still possible. and our Govt has proven they will take what ever they want from those that will let them..

WD is right ont he money with his estimae Virgil Ir runs $2,000 a year. 3 year leases. We built a cabin on it so there is a $50 cabin permit every year in that lease price. They use that to go into a pot incase someone lets their cabin go into disrepair and leaves it. They have money to hire it taken down. The company we lease with has parcels all over souther tier and into PA. We have 110 acres and it has a two common boarders with 2500 acres of state land. I saw properties that they had down to about 25 acres. The company has been great and except for cutting live trees we have exclusive use as if it is ours. The decission worked for what we needed. Oh and a bonus......I just got 2 dmaps from them for the property. they give them out based on 50 acre lots. so since we have 110 we get two. Nice little bonus especially when we have guys up that don't have doe permits for the area...we give them the green light on those becasue they are not assigned to any particular person. If you want I will shoot you a link to them. I thik they just upgraded their website to have a current listing of available property. And don't sweat agreeing with me....even when we didn't agree we really weren't that far apart on what we felt personally. Oh and with these guys you really don't have much to worry about with them selling it out from under you. They havene't sold a property in 50 years since it really doesn't cost them anything to have them.

Whe my daughter was in second grade her teacher was vocal about how it was cruel to kill animals. she is a Vegan. So after my wife got me all calmed down and talked me of out of the trip I was planning to school my daughter came home and advised me that she was no longer eating meat. I was feeling pretty cocky and figured I was smarter than the average 2nd grader so I gave her the have at it...lol. about a week into it on our way to her dance class I pulled into Wegmans and got her a nice salad....then proceded to the drive through at McD's....big mac...chicken nuggets...and sat there and started eating as she stared at her salad. She asked me for a chicken nugget (now I am not even sure those are meat) and I told her I didn't think that was a good idea becasue that would go against what she had decided......well with about 2 or 3 left in the box she had a change of heart and swapped her salad with me for the rest of them. Told you guys I was smarter than a 2nd grader...lol. I have some female frieds against hunting....they eat meat though. and just refuse to talk or think about where it comes from. -

Pardon my spelling guys but I think black bears can actually get trichinosis just like pigs. That is the whole reason for thouroughly cooking it. I don't think thee is much danger from commercially produced pork now a days with the medicines they use but it is still a hazard in wild pigs and I think bears too. Not sure G-man if thee are liver spots associated with that disease or not. -

I am not wishing for a tumble either Doc. But I am seeing many cut backs in the school systems and things like the sports programs snd Drivers Ed seem to be the things hit first. I didn't really want to add another real downer to the downfall of participation but back not to long ago Mom stayed home. and that ties into the other point you made about adult participation. Heck look at golf. growing up I didn't know anyone that golfed...seems like everyone does now...lol If you really want to take a look at things to check their effect on this...how about divorce rate and how unstable many families are these days. Again...I don't think I knew any kids in single parent homes unless it was from a death. Kinda hard for an absent father to do much of anything especially take the time to fit hunting with the kids in. Just more fodder. THat is the thing I like about these threads....does kinda make you think....and if nothing else...think back. -
Noodle. I need you to clarify something. What the heck is this recreation tax you are tlaking about. I have friends that own undeveloped land and it is way cheaper than land with a house or structure. And just FYI there are leases out there that are for year round and exclusive use. I am in one. I know many just lease te unting rights for the season but full leases are available

How far away are you really looking Geno?

ANd to think al the times growing up I heard guys rib each other about having a big one tied up to a tree in their backyard....I had no idea some folks actually do.
-
700 up by me would probably go between 1500 and 2500 an acre...depending on location and access> I can look for a bigger one if that isn't enough?

It is a grat time to buy if you can swing it. Lots of motivated sellers out there. you just have to sift through the ones that want to hit the lottery and are way over priced for the current market...but hey...that is their right too.
