something I have always done with my ML is mark the rod. I know when I drop it down the barrel and it is at that line it is loaded and I also know the charge is fully seated. It is a quick check and very easy to confirm that all is ok. Strange things can happen in the heat of a second follow up shot and I like the abiility to visually see that is is all the way down.

EAB Quarantine - Firewood Warning
Culvercreek hunt club replied to Fantail's topic in Camping and Hiking
I heard the fines are $250 a face cord...not sure if that is bgus but it came from a police officer I know. I am glad we can cut any downed tree to burn at camp. we put up 3 face cord of wood this last weekend...2 of it ash and it split like butter with the splitting axe. -
EAB Quarantine - Firewood Warning
Culvercreek hunt club replied to Fantail's topic in Camping and Hiking
Kind of puts a kink in the guys that sell fire wood. I am glad I don't heat with it. Watch what happens to the prices this fall. I hope you guys that heat with it have a place within 50 miles to cut your own. -
Just for my own sanity Doc, I dont see a question there. I will agree that they stressed high percentage shots. I believe the phrase thye used in my class (YEARS AGO so pardon if I get it wrong) was take the shot you can't miss. That said I do have to question your last sentence. It that is your stance on how you hunt or believe others should, the only acceptable shot is a straight broadside since it offers the largest target area. The quartering away closes that window and would be unacceptable. Am I understanding you right?

Easton Full metal jacket. I just started using them this year and they are heavy but turn out some very nice energy numbers at moderate speeds. They are flying great at the range and can't wait to try them in a few weeks. I wan't to put lighted knocks on but we will see. I am using G5 Montecs on them

I agree Doc. No way of knowing. It sure didn't look like anything too vitall was hit. The one thing I wish I knew was where this was done. Not to condone it but I think the local mindset MAY play a role. In the areas where the pigs have exploded they are viewed as pests. They still should be taken cleanly in my opinion but after seeing this and many of the helicopter shooting videos I think they shoot them like I remember shooting rats at the dump when I was a kid.

I don't want to get into a pissing match either. It wasn't my opinion on what I thought happened. I was just saying it was possible. The guy would only do that crap once at my hunting areas and he wouldn't be back. I don't agree with it and don't support it. I don't think we can condem this piss poor shot as intentional from a 1 minute video clip. I would have loved to hear the conversation before and after. That might very well give the proof I would need to call out the hangman...lol. I really think we are on the same page on the view ofthis. It is the intention point we vary on.
-
See...you just don't get it. I never said he DID jerk the shot....I said it was possible. You on the other hand were acting as judge, jury and executioner. because you KNEW his intention was to shoot it in the ass. There in lies the difference. I hope you never get called on jury duty because you are incapable of telling the difference between fact and supposition.

Unless you are storing them in a very moist area, they should be fine. I shot one box for 3 years. I don't think the boxes are even moisture sealed on the shelf. I don't think you will have an issue. Try them during yu target practice this year and find out.

I agree...the guy was a dink...took a bad shot....but if you look at the video (especially the rewind) the vitals are visible. Any of you guys ever take a heart shot on a deer broadside and hit the shoulder...what are we talking...5-6 inches. I have. I just don't think we can impose our thought as gospel on the shot....taking it...poor....the results and actions after....beyond poor....I can't guarantee his intentions and I don't believe anyone else should either.
-
Actuall you ARE much funnier than I am. You speak in such absolutes...You are very vocal on others ethics...the intentions on a shot....you just know that was an intentional ass shot. Come on.....Just a little advice...karma is a bitch..be careful how you judge others.

you are 100% correct biggame

great job. I thought you were going to not get the opportunity at first. It was cool to see you that determined to get in on tape. She moved when you were first going to draw....I thought she busted you.

Damn...with your ESP it must make it very easy in all aspects of life. If I had that gift I think I might take up poker playing rather than hunting

Well from what I can see on this I wouldn't call this a Texas heart shot. Whe someone uses that term I picture a straight away shot. Looked more like a trigger jerk by a jerk on a hard quartering away. At 85 yards there was plenty of window there to get into the boiler room. If that pig had been straight away he would have gone in a heap. That would be like hitting center of brisket on a quartering to shot. no vitals hit. That will be one messed up ham on that pig. It should have had a follow up shot and I could do without the whole dog sceen. I have never been a big fan of dog use on larger game but there are regions of the country that it is the norm. just not my cup of tea.

Here is the second one we built this weekend. Needed them low due to the thick cover up higher. -
There were three deer that I tool the Texas heart shot on. All three went into a heap. I was assisting friends in tacking a deer and that was the only shot presented. While tracking a wounded animal I will take any angle or part as on opportunity to finish the track. ethical or not I want the animal on the ground as soon as possible. That said. I woulnd't take that shot with a bow on an unwounded animal and I don't believe I would do it with a gun either. I have not had the opportunity to cast that one in stone though. I hae taken 2 does with head shots from a solid rest and inside 80 yards. head on and staring at me----.30-06. It wast the only shot on both. There wasn't even a twitch and not one ounce of meat spoiled.

We put up 2 more box blinds on the property this past weekend. All painted and rubber roof is on. Only need to mount the windows. Ran a little short on time since we split a couple face cord of wood too. -
Ok. No disrespect, but if it is that easy to define, let's do it. How far is ethical and what ia "the" reasonable range.

eating squirrels
Culvercreek hunt club replied to greybeard's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
Well I guess Gradpa knew what he was talking about "Tularemia is a bacterial disease of rabbits that is transmittible to man, usually through openings in the skin. Hunters who notice small white or yellow spots on the surface of the rabbit's liver when they are field dressing it should discard the entire rabbit immediately. During the early stages of the disease the liver can appear normal, though the infected rabbit may behave oddly, move slowly or be easily captured. It is a good idea to wear rubber gloves when dressing a rabbit and it is important to always cook rabbit meat thoroughly. Tularemia is transmitted between rabbits by fleas and ticks. Rabbits die from the disease, so it is not a problem once there has been a good hard frost and the temperature remains cool. A hard frost kills ticks and fleas which carry the disease, and a rabbit infected prior to the freeze will normally die within a few days of contracting the disease. " -
eating squirrels

My Grand father use to have me check all the livers on the rabbits to check for white spots. Always found a few each season. He would never eat those and I have not idea what it was. Squirrels i have also heard the larva thing. But you know what....I am not eating ANYTHING with worms in them....Ain't happening as long as I have some other option to fill my belly. I tok bluegills out of a lake down towards Cooperstown. There were small white larva in the flesh of the fillets. I called the DEC and asked what it was (Happened in the days before Google...lol) They told me there are no parasites in fish in NY that if cooked properly would hurt humans......They made some of the best compost for the tomato plants -
Gander has the kits to do it yourself....they are a little pricey though...lol

Hunters siding with Antis....sickening
Culvercreek hunt club replied to WNYBuckHunter's topic in General Chit Chat
I don't know if I am going to say this correctly so bare with me and let me try. When I look at the anti's....whether it is anti hunting...anti gun...anti de'jour....compared ot a group like hunters.....I see a lot of questions about why we are not as organized or dutiful or vigilent as they are. It comes to mind that the PC and politics associated with our activity is a side bar to the actual activity and passion. We hunt...we fish...we own and shoot guns. That is the passion we all share and the effort to dance through all the political BS is a distraction froom that passion. While we may support the efforts to protect or expand our interest they take second seat to the interest. To the anti's (which in many cases are liberals) the activity of removing or restricting what ever they are anti about IS their passion. There is no distraction. That is their main focus. Their hobby if you will. It gets all their attention and effort. That is why I think we fll short and why they have been allowed to make any headway...my 2 cents -
This is how NY needs to handle poachers!
Culvercreek hunt club replied to WNYBuckHunter's topic in General Hunting
How about getting the fines more realistic and really take anything used in the commission of the crime......and give the tipster a cut of the collected fines...random driving around in my opinion does little. Other hunters could really help this if we all took it seriously...and increased fines could help fund it.
