I certainly will be. I am excited about getting into the new stand I snuck into the transition area. Might end up being a better evening stand but the cam was showing movement there all day...can't wait to give the new bow a test drive.

what pistol to buy?
Culvercreek hunt club replied to BizCT's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
I am doing the same thing right now Biz. I am set on the .357 for the reasons listed. I have looked at many and I think I am going with the S&W 686. If you want to carry other than hunting you might want a 4" but I am going to use it to hunt so I am ging with an 8" barrel. The trigger is very smooth in DA and managebly light in SA. scope mounts are common and with the 8" it sits at 3 pounds. Practice is cheap with 38's and plenty of power for any bear we have in NY with a sturdy bullet. The L-frame is a proven design and I liked how it balanced. I have been looking in the used market and they seem to be hovering around 450-500. -
I would head there even with the wind. That bottom would provide travel for them out of the wind. You on the other hand would have to take your sea sickness meds and attach a 5 point race car harness to the tree stand....good luck I will be out in the am but my Pm got cut out for Homecoming. Sunday I will be out there

Anyone have a blue book that could toss me a pricing range on this gun. S&W Model 686 .357mag. 6 shot. 8-3/8 barrel Stainless with rubber grips. Appears to be in good condition. I would guess about 90%. Bore looks good. cylinder tight and normal wear marks with minor scuffs. Adjustable rear sights I am not sure of the year

I was on a job and doing some deep excavation and came across what turned out to be an old ash dump. We had to dig it all out and dispose of it . While doing that I came across a big vane of bottles. I am guessing that these are from before the 1940's from the previous work done on the site. But no one knows how old it could be. I probably have over 100 that are intact and in various conditions. Little corked medicine bottles all the way up to ones that look like a typical moonshine bottle...lol. Blue glass...green glass...white glass. some have the old molding marks on them and air bubble imperfections. Anyone have any idea where I can determine if any of them have any value at all. It was pretty cool finding them and a few have made there way into the game room as decorations.

If you are in a bind and have already made peace with spending the money on a new sight....I would epoxy it. I had to do the same thing before and it bought me time to not rush a re-setup. If you hae the time and won't be rushed I would get a new sight. -
That is exactly what that is Eddie. it is a collar that goes on in betweent he broadhead and the arrow shaft. Those things were famous for knotting up and effecting the arrow flight. My cousin actually had one damn near stop the arrow in flight to the point the arrow turned over. Wouldn't surprise me if THAT is the reason for the bad shot. Those things were just one more gimmick to make up for practice and developing tracking ability.

Gees WNY....mine in the back is a shooter but are you sure you would take the one up front over the one originally posted?...lol.

if you are hunting an area with a lot of pressure try to hang in for the long haul. Many hunters hit a morning watch and then go out for lunch and back in for an evening watch. try to use them to your advantage. be in the woods when they are moving. If you are on State land try to access the most inaccessible area and the areas the others won't go. On of the best buck I took on state land was in a swamp with little islands in there. It was wet and knee hgh boots were a minimum. Many days I wore my chest waders. The guys wouldn't go in there but the deer did. -
2011 Fletch "the Nimrod Chronicles"

I have changed the blades after I shot a deer but had the arrow and the head be fine. I have had both ruined as well. all depends....when all is good I just changed the blades and kept using the head and arrow. I can't wait to see how the G5's act since they are one piece -
he gets a pass from me. Not to long ago he would have been down. It helps making that decission if you have seen larger buck walking around your hunting area

I am with you Muzzy....maybe a little more range time and that first shot won't miss...lol or you were stretching beyond your limits.

where the heck do I find that....if I uncheck every vibrate setting I would have to turn them all back on ...No? where did you get the one button widget
-
I used my phone to text and surf last year but I probably won't this year. I got a new droid and I will be damned if I can figure out how to turn off the vibrate. My Blackberry would allow ring/vibrate/ and silent modes. I can't find a silent mode on this thing. It vibrates very loudly so I won't have it on unless i can figure it out. I need cheaters to read a book and they don't work so well for shooting...lol. I don't wear glasses in the woods so no reading.

how does the second arrow get in contact with the rest if there is nothing that moves? Have you shot the rig with lighted knocks like the fire nocks that have inertia switches? Does the first shot light the second arrow?

I would rather make two drags with 200 pound deer than make one drag with a 200 pound bear. they are the toughest thing I have ever dragged. A big bad of jello...lol. they roll twist and just seem heavier. Good luck and since i wouldn't have placed the gut pile with the intention of feeding I would take the shot. I usually drag my deer about 100 yards away from stands just to keep the yotes away but I have used a stand that a hunting partner had gutted near and I didn't know it was there.

Interesting concept. I think the last thing I want on my bow though is one more moving part or one more thing to rattle. Keep us informed on the progress...good luck

Going to have to try this. I have never done one like this. when we have done pigs a buddy has one of these boxes. no smokey flavor though since the heat and fire is above the pig http://www.lacajachina.com/model-1-70-lbs-roaster-aluminum/

On the ear damage. It could be from fighting. The buck I got last year hade the same type damage on the ears. I mentioned it to the Taxidermist and he said he felt it wasn't a shot. He sees it alot on the bigger bucks because they fight so aggressively. It isn't a tear from a point it is damage done by pinching between their antler and the other bucks antler. That would take a hell of a olt of force but think about how much force it would take to break off an antler or a point. He laid my bucks ear back against the main beam and it fit perfectly in line with the beam. So if you see ear damage see if it will contact any antler part and how it lines up. Paula---I would suggest sighting in in as steady a situation as possible...then practice how ever you want....then any deviation is you and you KNOW the gun is on. It will also let you guage what distance you feel comfortable shooting from in different positions. ---just my 2 cents. As far as the head shot. pistuce this....no buck tag left...still hunting.....notice a doe looking straight at you over the top of a log. You have a tree to rest against ..40 yards....30-06....straight on head shot and that is all that is visible. That was the situation on the only one I ever took. It never flinched. but I would not do it again because the mess bothered me. I hate to hear any of us talk in such absolutes as some of these threads have brought out. (legal hunting situations I mean). To say a head shot is never ok....texas heart shot is never ok....broad side is ALWAYS the shot ( I have seen many gut shot deer from broad sides..many more than jaws hits from head shots). Not one single hunting situation is exactly the same and us as hunters are all different. Different equipment, different alotted time ...different skills and differnt goals. Many of these threads are on topics that hit on things we have been brought up around...or brought up NOT to do..all based on things passed down to us or just being learned by the new comers. But we are all differnt and this is a passion and our opionions are passionate as well.

I am out of town....when I get back Saturday I will shoot you a link. -
I pickle ours.....I also do it with calves heart in the off season

The ones I have shot had an extractor....heck my ML even does for the primer. It doesn't kick it out like my single shotgun but does push it back. That is weird. On the weight...mine is heavy with the laminate wood stocks but I like that. I seem steadier with a heavy gun and the recoil is definitely less

Our Biggest Problem as NY Hunters...
Culvercreek hunt club replied to sits in trees's topic in General Chit Chat
One thing that has fallen out of popularity that kept me very active in the outdoors....Boy Scouts....our troop was very active and the leaders were great.....it has fallen off now though. Bubba ...I am very interested in becoming an instructor. How can I get information NY....as fas as the online course....our company tried the OSHA certification thing on line....I didn't see the results. I know there were folks that did not do it themselves.....you can't guarantee that the student is the one taking the course....and some kids do learn better in a visual classroom environment instead of reading. -
