OK guy's Call your lawmakers

But shotguns and rifles are allowed in the same season in many areas and fall under different restrictions......but are included in the same season. Rifles are not allowed in a shotgun only county, just as crossbows are not allowed in bowseason. Its that whole "superior weapon" thing. But we did, in the last decade, have a major portion of the state change to include rifles in historically shotgun only areas. That would seem like a comparable addition. did the addition of rifles add any hunters?....maybe a few...ones that couldn't take the punishment of a shotgun....(but a 20 is pretty light). so there was probably only a shift in implement....some prefered the rifles over the shotguns and started to carry them. I am not sure of your age, Arrow, but you may have seen that shift in gun season in your area since you hunt some region 8 areas. I didn't hear any loud and focused debate from the shotgun hunters that grew up that way and only knew and prefered that. the addition of rifles gave a clear advantage over the shotguns. both firearms.....similiar to our discussion here.....both archery equipment with many beleiving the crossbow holds and advantage over the other archery equipment. I hunt shotgun only area...areas that allow both....and really haven't noticed any difference in the season as the years have progressed. I expect that will be the same if the crossbows are included in Archery season -

Dave, I don't mean this as an attack so please do not read anything into this....it is just an observation. When I listen to the folks that as so vocally opposed to the crossbow being included in the bow season there seems to be an underlying theme even when they do not say it. I commend you for voicing your true feelings and I respect that. That common tone always seems to take the form of how someone else's actions....using a crossbow....would detract from their experience. Whether it is shooting a deer that they were not able to take or too many gun hunters trapsing around the woods and disturbing the deer. I am lucky and have not had to hunt public land in years and I could understand the stance for some that only have that option open to them. I think the inclusion would increase participation and in a time when our numbers are on a down turn and our sport is coming under more frequent attacks, I think any thing that increases our numbers.....even if a small number is a good thing. Too bad a topic like this divides us when we should be standing shoulder to shoulder at all costs -

There are folks out there that are capable of those shots with a compound....unfortunately I am not one of them...lol the buck could have just as easily walked by you at 50 and them walked by your neighbor at 20. It is a crap shoot we are all involved in. I guess if the neighbors are goofs I would feel bad seeing them take one but the guys near me ....I would love to see anyone I know take a great buck. -

I did not misrepresent the truth and I resent your comment that I intentionally posted incorrect information. I was wrong and I admitted it. The books are not important to me and I do not follow the rule changes since I would never enter a buck for the book. My experience that led me to comment that was my last purchase of my compund where the dealer I was purchasing it from made it clear that the bow I was buying would make any book buck ineligible and showed me the rules. I bought it anyway. I have 2 bucks that would have made the book for P&Y and you know what....they aren't in there. You seem to whine and cry about how others on here are talking to you but I have never made an agressive or derogatory comment to you. Yet you seem to take an agressive and posturing position. It has happened twice in your comment to me. It is hard to take someone seriously when they come across like a spoiled, silver spoon in mouth, little brat that can't get their way. -

If it is purely based on the principal of it...I respect that. Myself I would prefer more folks out there participating and strengthening our ranks as hunters. -

Totally False. Shame on you. Bucks taken by Fair Chase with any compound would qualify for the book. NO crossbow buck would....nor should it. PLEASE....stick to the truth, or drop out of the discussion. 4. Effective January 1, 2004, animals taken with bows have nominal percent of let-off greater than 65 percent shall be listed with an asterisk (*) in the Records. It is recognized that variations in draw length and/or draw weight can affect the percent of let-off on compound bows. For these reasons minor variations in let-off are acceptable. Prior to that any taken with over a 65% let off were not eligible I was wrong...you get in now....just have an astericks like the steroid using home run hitters...lol -

I would willingly give up a portion of MY deer season to make room for crossbows, but keep bow season separate. What say you now, Mr. Know-it-all? I still don't get your position. you would rather give up a portion of the bow season than see crossbows included in the season. if they were proposing a 50/50 split ...you would be ok with that? I wouldn't...I like the length of the bow season. I still don't get how the inclusion would affect your season to present itself in such opposition. -

Is it all about competition to you with the oposition to the crossbow? based on your comment it seems like it is. A book buck taken with a corssbow would not be elligible for P&Y...but them neither would most of the higher let off compounds that most of us use. To look at your first comment I don't think they should compete in the race. They should however be allowed to enjoy the same roads throughout that beautiful country a recreational manner. Same for the jet skis. they are used on the same body of water as the others you list for recreational purposes. For the chain saws please see my first biking comments. I think this post really speaks to the ones that find problems with your oposition. It seems to be based in competition and not what is best for the sport. I honestly believe that anything that puts more of us hunters in the field for tha maximum amount of time and allows the highest level af participatio only moves us to a stronger position for maintaining our priveledges.....with in the confines of the management plan and laws. I believe DEC/Leg. will make this move in teh next few years...especially if they can find a way to make a few bucks off it -

Arrow. It is entirely relevant. It speaks to motivation in the opposition. If the folks opposing this really feel there is an actual basis to not have the inclusion that is not emotional they should really get it out there. I think that this will end up included in the next few years and from the guys I know and talk with the majority of them are for it. If there is a good reason to not have this happen it would be in everyones best interest to understand the impacts and discuss them. -

You aim it using sight or a scope...which compounds do...you pull a trigger which many compound shooters do. so it does boil down to the drawing and holding aspect for you. let's assume for sake of argument that this coming season it is included in the regular bow season. How would your experience be affected? -

It doesn't belong in bow season because of your very thoughts....it is more like a gun than a bow in its operation. If people want to hunt with a bow...let them, and welcome. I'd like to see more BOW hunters, so you're "won't share the woods" theory is clearly wrong. But asking....no, DEMANDING that the rules be changed to allow a weapon that is fundamentally different than a bow....you are darn right. I am opposed. so you are oppoed because of the fact that you pre-draw it and shoulder it. the other mechanical funtion of the implements are the same. This is your sole grounds of opposing the introduction into bow season? -

So this is your thinking....that a crossbow is more like a gun than a bow in its operation.... and you leap to the conclusion that anyone against it doesn't want more people hunting? How about the fact that it is more like a gun than a bow? : I really want to understand the oppositon point of view. I could understand opposing a gun introduction because of the disturbance component. Th oposition to the use of a crossbow by others doesn't make sense to me. My choice to use a compound and my hunting experience would not be affected by any others choice between the two implements. -

I do have to take exception to a part of this comment. I have probably taken over half of my bow deer from a seated position. I would suggest that any bowhunter should take the time to be proficient at a variety of shooting positions. There is a difference int he drawing component of the two implements but in the context of the thread (handicapped or disabled hunters) I think that concession is justified and is only supporting members of our hunting community in their pursuit. -

I think your comment actually generates some of the questions that have been asked of you. You view the inclusion as an intrusion. From what I have read, that is the question that NY Antler was asking of you guys. How would your neighbor using a crossbow be and intrusion to your experience? I have hunted with a recurve and eventually changed into using a compound. There have been years, because of my work schedule that I have not been able to practice with my bow enough to be comfortable to go afield with it. On those years I somply took my hunting time up north to use my rifle. I have shot a crossbow and I can see the benefit of not having to draw and hold while game is present. the act of raising the crossbow is more similiar to raising a gun rather than drawing a bow. But from the experience I have with a crossbow I would never make the change because my compound is much smoother and quieter and it is capable of delivering an arrow to any game in the thick areas I hunt. The claims of the 100 yard shots seems a little far fetched. the noise generated by the ones I have shot would really increase the possibility of a string jump at any ranges outside the normal range of a compound. The only basis I could have for not wanting them to be used by my neighbor would be a feeling that he could get a deer that I have my sights on. If he doesn't of can't bowhunt with a now legal implement it would be less competition for me. I think that conclusion is a driving force in many questioning the opposers actual motives. In the absence of any true argument other thant he crossbow is not a peice on archery equipment it leave many with the conclusion that the opposition in self serving and based in greed. -
