if the pork fat is a concern I have used a couple egg whites for a pound of burger. it binds it pretty well. I think the egg whites are probably even on your Dad's diet

I have eaten deer with wounds and not had any issues. I passed on 2 that did have the same infections and green/tan/ oozing puss. The DEC looked at both and one doe thay gave me a new tag. But the buck I chose to keep since it was my 3rd largest. I did not eat it. I could not guarantee that the infection did not get in the blood stream. I feel if it makes it there the risk of the infection spreading throughout the body is there too. Probably a personal preferecne but the would was so infected and smelled so bad I don't think I could have gotten past it to put it in my mouth. And I have eaten some pretty strange stuff...lol

Antler Restrictions - What are your thoughts?
Culvercreek hunt club replied to TheHunter's topic in Deer Hunting
WOW...Thehunter can cut and paste...there is a pattern there. He does it with any argument he is trying to make as well. Maybe just try one original thought...come on...it won't hurt...I promise- 1885 replies

I always wonder how much they actually process and "learn". here is a video you all have probably seen. It is a squirrel...and I have to believe that on an intellegence meter deer have to rate higher than a squirrel.

This takes place in England - the owners of the yard added each piece of the Rube Goldberg contraption slowly, so that when the squirrel learned one section and got the nuts, they then added the next section. Finally it ended with what you see on the clip! It took place over 2 weeks to get to this point. Either way this is pretty cool to watch.[/t][/t]

Mission_Impossible_Squirrel.WMV

congrats....nothing like combining sports to make a fun day...hunting,,,hiking,,,swimming..lol. And it seems like it takes forever to get that swamp smell off your clothes. The only downfall of duck hunting in swamps

the earlier the better before the rodents start to dine on them. I have had my best luck in the january thaw but also at the first melt off like around March. bright and sunny...WNY is right on there. I focus on the thickest stuff I can find and the trails leading to and from it.

Anyone brew their own beer or make wine?
Culvercreek hunt club replied to burmjohn's topic in General Chit Chat
I guess I am lucky. I live just minutes from a store called Beers of the World. they have everything you need for brewing and wine making and a great selection of .....you guessed it....beers from around the world... -
when I do my venison stew meat int eh crock pot I let it go on high for 2 hours....reduce heat and another 10.....falling apart tender every time. if the taste is a bit off try adding beef stock to it at the start of cooking....it tends to mellow the flavor it's off a bit

I am betting he won't even think twice about it. Makes me sick to my stomach.

Anyone brew their own beer or make wine?
Culvercreek hunt club replied to burmjohn's topic in General Chit Chat
bought a device at the brewing store...take a reading at start.....when you think it is done ..... and then a few day later. if the fermenting is complete the specific gravity of the cider doesn't change anymore. original reading - final reading x 131 = ABV content. came up a little higher than I expected but still tastes great. 5 gallons of cider...5 pounds of white cane sugar, 5 pounds of dark brown sugar, one package of champagne yeast. Pretty easy really...no cooking like with beer. -

no beer or wine but i have my first run of Hard Cider mellowing right now...already been reacked and have 1 month of the second sitting under my belt...did a littl sampling after the rack. 11.5% ABV -
So i decided on a rifle, now what?
Culvercreek hunt club replied to jimbo91's topic in General Chit Chat
My brother in law bought the same gun. the gun is ok but the optics weren't as clear as I am use too. we changed his mounts right away....as Dinsdale said the mounts are key. That gun will do any whitetail hunting you will run across in NY. If it fits you well go for it and you can always upgrade the optics down the road. the fit is what I alwys check. i want the scope/sights falling right in line when I shoulder a gun....you shouldn't have to figgit around to get the sight picture...when you shoulder it it should be there. -
Well you guys did better than I did down here...windy and no movement and all the snow we got couldn't even be classified as a trace....I am bummed

Whats so hard about passing yearling bucks?
Culvercreek hunt club replied to punch's topic in Deer Hunting
13 this bow season...just couldn't get the big boys close enough. I do pass on them...my point has always been that I just won't support a restriction that takes away one of our hunters freedom to choose away. The one thing that does make it easier for me...the areas I hunt do hold big bucks. The whole hunting experience for me is about more than the harvest. I know some of you are talking about mature bucks and NOT the horns...let me throw a what if out there....a monster bodied buck walks right under you stand...I am talking a 6.5....250#er...but the monster bases are broken from fighting...about 2 inches up from the guard horns....legally a 4 point....do you harvest it? -
Rem 700 investigation
Culvercreek hunt club replied to Fantail's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
I know people that work there. I grew up next to there. They are just like any company...anyone in the know can't speak to media...sure the guy running a lathe may have an opinion but like many manufacturing operations they are probably bound by confidentiality agreements. Let me ask you guys this. Many manufactures of the old hammer firearms....before the falling block safety was implemented...like the pre64 model 94 winchester.....a wrap on the hammer would discharge...should those manufacturers recall...or be forced to recall? Not really on topic...but how far is too far? -
Rem 700 investigation

WNY....I was actually thinking more about an analogy with the cars brakes.....run them to the studs.....do the work yourself without the proper knowledge...they give way in a hard braking situation....must be the car manufacturers fault....bottom line...rule #1. ALWAYS keep your barrel piinted in a safe direction. -
Drizzle for last hour....just moved up to rain....walked to an elevated blind no one has hunted yet....here's hoping

Little breezy this morning. Nice and comfortable though… as long as the rain holds off...last night was bright as hell...we will see what today brings
