  1. I heard the guard that was watching the area that night will be having an accident tomorrow.
  2. based on the WMU's on the chart the chances of selection for first and second are listed.
  3. No. Fenced base and only service members. I am not sure they even let the Federal employees that are non-service hunt it. There are some freaking brutes in there.
  4. I used the Montecs with my Hoyt Carbon Express. I was truly impressed with their toughness and ease of sharpening. I had 5 deer on one arrow and broadhead and one shot was through a shoulder bone and another took out 2 ribs. The only thing I did not like about them was it always seemed like the blood trails sucked. Now I use to shoot thunderheads too and they aren't that much different in size then the Montecs. Just never remember them having as little blood as the Montecs. I had not personally seen the rage broadheads in action but had tried a fold back style mechanical and I was very under impressed with penetration on those. Then a couple years ago my buddy put Rages on his Crossbow. The two blood trails I witnessed were hideous. So I tried them and the the deer I have taken with them looked like I was hunting with an ax.
  5. I have been on this base for work. Service members move in and out. All of them have to qualify in a shooting test.
  6. Looks like this and you may notice a little bit of oil coming out of the brass screen in the picture.
  7. Check the fuel pump if it has one. My John Deere goes through a pump every 2 years and it's becasue of the Ethanol in the fuel. It eats the rubber diaphragm in the pump and allows the oil, (used to pulse and pump the fuel from the tank to the Carb) When it starts to go you get little puffs of smoke like you described and it progressively gets worse. Have you noticed any drop in the oil level? Eventually my oil concentration in the fuel gets to high and it quits running.
  8. It's worth a read and one of the only ones I have seen that has some real data associated with it rather than just opinion.
  9. 1.---I have been practicing more this year for bow than I have in a long time. I will be hunting the full season with the recurve that I had made using the riser off my father's old Darton compound. (Thanks Moog for all your assistance on this) I am committed this year to not back off on this one for any reason. (EDIT: and I am shooting the first deer older than a fawn that comes withing range. lol) 2.---It looks like our QDMA branch has 6-8 participants for the Field to Fork program this year. (still waiting on the registration on a few). I want this program to continue to grow and as a goal I want to repeat the success we had last year. 100% harvest. 3.--- Drag Moog up north for the Northern Zone Muzzleloader opener. (10/19-10/20)
  10. The compound distance seemed right on par with what I have heard and experienced myself. The crossbow was the one that actually surprised me. Always hearing about how the longer shots will be taken and seeing how accurate mine is out to 50 yards I at least expected that number to be in the 30's for an average.
  11. I will be lobbing a 250 grain fixed blade all bow season this year.
  12. I found this really interesting. not to make this a "crossbow" thing but this is data on how far people are really shooting with them. The relative shot distances taken do not appear to be a factor in the assessment of broadhead effectiveness. The chart below shows the average shot distances by bow and broadhead type. The differences in average shot distances for the respective subgroups are not statistically significant. The average shot distance for 633 hit deer is 19.1 yards
  13. I've spent quite a few weekends tenting on the state sites on the undeveloped side of the lake (East). That is big country up there. We used to focus on the area between John Mack pond and Crotched pond. Beautiful area but I never ran across an area that I could say had really good sign. Sounds like you are on to a sweet spot.
  14. Personal experiences always vary. This article is over a decade long look at recovery data using Mechanicals VS Fixed. It's worth the read. https://www.qdma.com/does-broadhead-choice-really-matter/?utm_source=eblast&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=2019-08-08
  15. Since licenses just went on sale I figured I would remind everyone that you can donate to the Venison Donation Coalition when you buy your license. NY State just collects the money and it passes right to this worth wild non- for profit organization. This is how the local processors get paid to process the donated deer and the meat is turned over to soup kitchens, food pantries and such. I checked and you can even do it online if you buy your license that way. If I you already bought it online our QDMA branch will be doing a "drive" this year on go fund me again but you can also go back online and at the bottom of the page you will see the logo there and it is super easy. If you are buying at a licensing agent and they ask, think about contributing., If they don't ask, ask them about it. It is there. Imagine if all the license purchasers just rounded their purchase up to the nearest $5 or $10 increment. SO if you purchase of the license is $61, how about making it the $65? NOTICE::: This money DOES NOT GO TO NY STATE.
  16. I have had a few questions like that from my doctor. He said they are mandated to ask. I told him I am mandated to refuse to answer. He doesn't ask me anymore. lol
  17. The atmosphere of hunting camp is just hard to duplicate on state land.
  18. D pends on the lease in my opinion. Mine is 12 months a year exclusive use. Allowed to build a cabin and for the cost of taxes or less. If anyone owned it their pay the mortgage and taxes. Since mine is on timber company land the only thing I can’t to do cut standing trees.
  19. I feel that any good management plan has a working component that controls predators. Trapping is so much more effective than hunting IMO. I was asking because I know farms and timber lots that are managed for crops and timber as the main focus and they exclude predator trapping and hunting. Their view is the more predators around the harder the deer population will be hit above legal tag limits and reducing the pressure on their marketable crop. I get it, It's their land. Just need to go into a lease understanding all of it.
  20. love that idea if I am leaving it on site. Thank you.
  21. This session was held at the National Headquarters during Whitetail Weekend. I didn't get to see it in person, I was at a culinary session..lol. It si worth the watch for those that want to put in some plots but have limited or no equipment.
  22. Understood. Was just wondering if there was a reason behind the decision. Is furbearer hunting allowed?
  23. We are still doing F2F but this is an easy one. meet with some directors and supply them equipment. I am working on lining up an instructor certification that they can use for their staff and will offer support if they need it.
  24. I am dealing with the Gates Chili schools right now and they are full bore on board to add to their PE curriculum. Hoping to add a school system each year around us. Once is is shown to be positive and work I expect it to be easier.
