  1. If the deer were in good shape and I thought they could make it through the winter I would let them go. They are usually totally stressed. Do it as quick as possible and hope they make it.
  2. I thought about the 1 buck rule. What a bout the total experience of being in the woods all season long. The guy who doesn't get a doe permit is done hunting once he shoots his buck. The money he won't spend the rest of the season??? This may sway these hunter who have tagged out to get kids involved. They will have more time on their hands and want to get back in the woods. It may also drive up hunters using other peoples tags. Sure can see that happening. It wouldn't be a bad place to start but I don't see NY doing this.
  3. Well said Steve. We have more and more bear on my property every year. Do I want to shoot one, I don't know? They are getting a little close for comfort which may sway my thinking.
  4. So in essence we want equality in the first breeding cycle so all does get bred. Cuts down on the 2nd rut, helping those deer regain strength to make it through the winter. Does will drop their fawns at the correct time of year. Factors that come into play-early rut, late spring snowfall, age class of bucks being killed during season and DMP's. I'm starting to understand what your saying Joe:) The health of the herd.........
  5. Joe, Just taking in all this info. A yearling buck is a 1.5 year old? If so these bucks with AR's in place get a pass. I just don't see how age structure keeps these bucks from cruising around chasing does and sparring with each other. I see it all the time small buck chasing does and the big boy follows behind and takes over when the time is right. You say the biggest plus in age structure is that these yearlings get to put on body weight so they can make it through the winter. Respectively I just don't see it. Those 1.5 year old deer are still involved in the breeding season. What age group do you want breeding does? Is it your 2.5-4.5 year old deer? Good info just trying to wrap my head around it.
  6. Wow surprised the dog lived. Friend found a Pitbull in the same predicament last year. Vet couldn't save the dog. Quills went through the eyes.
  7. I guess anything is possible. Try to get a picture, that would be cool. I did a lot of hunting in Roscoe, I like the name.
  8. Bear spray on my person at all times. No firearms but that may change.
  9. I have and she didn't care a bit. Content on eating corn and watching her two cubs. I was 30 yards from one of the cubs and she just kept on eating.
  10. Could be Doc. We are seeing more and more sign. My place is also thick with a lot of berries and corn. I don't think they will be pushed from their food source.
  11. So my brother went up to my camp this weekend I was there last weekend. He pulls the cards out of the two trail cams. The cams are about 100 yards apart and you have to come pretty close to cam#1 to get to cam#2. Well last Sunday cam #2 takes a picture of me at 9:19 am. I was mowing the trails. At 9:20 on cam#1 there is a picture of a bear. Pretty close for me. Interesting that the sound of the mower didn't scare him off? I also have to check both clocks on the cams, they might be off?
  12. I left last weekend at 2 am Saturday morning to go to camp. My brother left yesterday with his family at 12:30 in the afternoon. Between the cross bronx and all the construction on rt17 a 6 hr trip took him 9. It's crazy and won't get any better, hunting season will suck.
  13. I planted them two years ago. They didn't grow very big and the deer didn't hit them like I thought they would. Soil was perfect for them so I don't know what happened?
  14. Yes they are. I've mentored kids and will do it again when the time is right. Put that early youth season in and you can bet the ranch I will have a couple of kids on my property hunting. That said mentoring during the bow season is a blast. Hanging two stands in the same tree and watching that wide eyed kid enjoying the outdoors, priceless!
  15. 50 acres is the size. Yea that gets me one every year.
  16. Have someone going up this weekend and I'll be at camp in two weeks. Hope to get a better shot of him.
  17. Just got back from camp. This is about 3 weeks worth of picts. Check out the freaky buck. One horn growing down and is it just me or does he look a bit peculiar? Here are some real small fawns and a couple of pictures of the coyotes. I'm pretty sure that is two yotes in that picture. That is a clover food plot. all the animals seem to love it. BTW just spent 12 hours on the road to and from camp. Saw some really big healthy deer on rt 17. Enjoy the picts
  18. Wooly, always thinking. I bet your right.
