First-light replied to burmjohn's topic in Deer Hunting
Still can't decide if I should go up. I have 150lbs of venison in my neighbors freezer that I have to pick up. Have a nasty cold and can only hunt 3/4 the day Sat and Sunday morning? ??? ? 6 hr drive?? What to do??? I have a three day weekend for smokepole planned. My neighbor took two doe this week but still hasn't seen a buck? The moon will be right this weekend. -

coyote impack on small game
First-light replied to sweet old bill's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
I am going to try to post an article from Field and Stream from a few years ago on the impact of coyotes on the deer herd. I thought it was real good, a quick one page read that got straight to the point. -
How to rid your camp from cluster flies??????
First-light replied to First-light's topic in General Chit Chat
Couldn't get it started last weekend! They see me coming with the leaf blower, they'll drop like flies! Oh- they are flies???????lol -
Took a deer years ago that was shot by an arrow through the hoof. I shot it on opening day, buck was limping really bad. Upon inspecting the deer I saw puss coming from the wound and the eyes of the deer. I gutted the deer and brought him to the local processor. The meat was fine and I'm here to tell this story!

How to rid your camp from cluster flies??????
First-light replied to First-light's topic in General Chit Chat
Same here, its not a problem when I'm at camp its cleaning them up when I get there. -
Happened to me on Morton Hill road in Roscoe. My brother-in-law and I were headed to my first camp and the truck started sliding backwards on ice we ended up in the ditch. The local farmer came by and we asked for help, he said he was too busy (never liked him anyway.) 10 minutes later an old guy comes by smoking a corn pipe in his pickup. Pulled us right out before we could say thanks he was on his way, by that time the sander came along and all was well. Thought I heard bells and the old man laughing as he pulled away, true story!

Thanks Eddie, Next year I'll take it to the next level and spay the outside of the house. These suckers do get through the smallest holes. I would of never done Board and Batten siding if I knew they get through such small holes. -
I would. I would like to see shows that I can relate to. And maybe a show here and there that has some real useful info. If these guys are such "experts", what is wrong with doing a bit of education along the way. Frankly, I could get into shows that focus on certain specific aspects of hunting. For example, how many of us know everything there is about blood trailing, or scouting and all the interpretation of various kinds of sign, and how about all the decisions that go into stand placement in different circumstances. Or how about a show on the selection and use of trail cams or other pieces of hunting equipment. I like the Deer & Deer-hunting style shows where they actually try to tell you something interesting and/or useful. Yeah, I would like to see some of that "actual work" in real average hunting areas and hunting situations. I do not really get off on the rather boring parade of ridiculous farm-raised deer. Frankly, I think some of those genetic freaks look rather stupid. There is an awful lot of info about hunting that doesn't even involve shooting a deer that could be tailored to conditions that real actual hunters encounter every year. What I have found with most of these whitetail hunting shows is that they are predictable, routine, and just plain boring. Everything is the same except for the particular hunter-hero playing his role. You could pick any show from the past 20 years and replay it and everyone would think they were brand new. There is nothing memorable or unique about any one of them. Doc You nailed it Doc, I often thought about a blood trailing episode and how it could help so many hunters. Like you said-boring!

Any help out there? They are not around while at camp but there is always a huge amount of them to clean up when I get there. Tried bombing the place and filling gaps in the siding outside. HELP!

I used to watch those shows all the time, not any more. I still watch Barta cause he is such a personality and now he has to do it against all odds. I give the man alot of credit. The other shows are a waste of my time. Bring back American Sportsman!

Venison Collection Endeavor 2010 by Fletch
First-light replied to Fletch's topic in Member Hunting Journals
Nice going Fletch. Glad you found him and put him out. -
Doc, My neighbor's group shot a buck a few days ago. Now, the wounds don't seem as extensive as the one you came upon but this small 6pt had gashes all around the neck area. They were deep and some had started to heel over. They told me it looked like a big buck took some frustration out on it????

Great deer!

Eddie, I so much enjoy your videos! That was some hill, I used to hunt a place that had a big hill if you shot a deer you had to call someone to get you on the other side. Thanks for the video-Happy Thanksgiving!

, Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Again, we all have our opinions. All the farmers I know use the nuisance permits during gun season, many are left over. I have heard of stories of gut shot deer left to rot but never saw it for myself. Shorten the gun season and the experience decreases in many ways. Look at all those trips to camp, time with good friends, stories to tell, taking a kid hunting, revenue lost to local towns, and chances at bagging a buck that would decrease. I don't believe you will get a significant amount of guys picking up the crossbow in exchange to be out in the woods two weeks after gun opener, just won't happen. Hey, just my thoughts, if it aint broke don't fix it!
