Who uses pop-up blinds for deer? Are they effective?
bubba replied to nyslowhand's topic in General Hunting
I have a dog house pop up blind. I put it in a patch of cedars 4 years ago and left it. I brushed it in and it is still there. I hunt out of it ocasionally and have seen deer. I think the trick is the same as a ladder stand. Put it up and leave it up so the wildlife get used to it. I only sit in it when the wind is right. You still need to be still and quiet in it as I am sure you know. I have not harvested a deer out of it yet , but I know I could if I used it more often. It is on a piee of property, I do not hunt a lot. -
we went to a local rv dealer and got one out of a junk camper. Works well.

I agree. I certainly do not hang stands on the edge of property. I also have an agreement with neighbors that if they shoot and it crosses over they have permission to retrieve. and vice versa. I make these arrangements before season.
-
It serves a dual purpose. They keep an eye on the neighbors to make sure they do not tresspass and they also wait for you to chase the deer of your property to theirs. Do I think it is ethical no legal yes. As far as myself, if the deer is on the deer is over the line he or she walks away.

the sheets are pretty much pure lead. I have very little to skim. I always had much more with wheel weights. In fact, I had to empty the pot and clea it out a couple times with wheel weights.
-
my brother in law works in a high pressure chemical plant. they use lead as gaskets. They get it in 4x8 sheets and punch out the gaskets. What is left, he folds up and bring to me and I mold bullets and sinkers for both of us.

in simple terms, there are 5 stages to a hunter. We all move back and forth in them and sometimes use more than one. They are 1. The shooting stage. No matter what you have to do a lot of shooting. Whether it be at the range which is good if you actually shoot to improve your skills, or shoot to hear the gun go boom. The same is true when hunting. If a goose fliees by, you have to shoot all the shells the gun holds to get it. 2. Limiting out stage. No matter whether you plan to use them or not, you have to get your limit every time you are out. Kind of like the bragging rights. in general you would equate these two stages to young hunters starting out. 3. Trophy Stage You start hunting a trophy. Now keep in mind what is a trophy to one may not be to another. My biggest trophy is a spike horn I shot the year after my Dad died with his 300 savage rifle. I proudy display that rack on my wall of fame. This stage seems to suck a lot up and they never move out. The bigger better faster mentality. 4. Method stage. The hunter decides he is going to use one method to get his game. It may be that he is only going to use a bow all season or in my case in the middle of rifle country, I decide to use a muzzleloader all season. It is a personal choice made, and is the most fulfilling when successul. 5. Sportsman Stage. This is where the hunter enjoys the whole aspect of the hunt. Harvesting an aminal is secondary to the time spent in the woods or at camp with the other guys. This is when a hunter tries to pass on the traditions and methods to others. You are just as happy when another harvests a nice animal as if you did so yourself. In my opinion, you are not a truie hunter until you get to this stage. As i see it, too many are locked into the trophy stage. I feel a lot of this comes from the far from reality based hunting shows. And people get greedy. For instace, nothing can ever change because this was set up for my group and no others can get in (bow hunting). I still say in the new DSM V (the diagnostic criteria for establishing a mental illness) should have a criteria for hunter insanity. People literally go insane for three of four months. My fondest memories of my younger years were sitting around in our hunting camp listening to the stories of my dad and uncles, the laughs, and the hunting planning. When I try to do that now, no one seems to want to listen. It is too much texting, facebooking and listening to their mp3 players. So in summary, I think hunting has went to the wayside for technology. Everybody needs trail cams and range finders and the biggest caliber gun there is to harvest a whitetail. I truly do not know how our predeccors sruvived and were able to harvest animal without all the gadgets. WE ALL NEED TO GET BACK TO THE BASIC IDEALS AND TRADITIONS THAT MADE HUNTING WHAT IT WAS, OR I AM AFRAID IT WILL BECOME SOMETHING ELSE EXTINCT.

no it is a one sided argument about BO. Anyone opposing it is stupid. Just look back and read
-
So true. I mold pure lead 44 calibr round nose bullets I shoot in all my myuzzleloaders except the sidelock and flintlock I shoot round balls in. I will take a lead proectile at 1500 fps over any jacketed bullet they ever made for muzzleloaders.

but yet you did comment. hmmm The funny part i you never respond to any questions just spew foolishness. Again I will ask why does NY have a better accident record than states that have mandatory blaze orange laws. You ridea of importance may no tbe the same s others. Oh I will be sure to mention to my eco friend how you think his statements were ridiculous. Let me know your address so he or a colleague can stop by and explain it to you there Mr. Know it all. I beg you to do so. I know you wont because you are a typical internet wannabe. Shoot your mouth off behind a screen, but face to face you would not say boo. The net is full of guys like you. I am starting to think you are taking a liking to me and not in a natural way. You follow me around making comments about everything I talk about. Sorry I am straight and married, so look elsewhere ok.

Do you wear Orange? If so why? If not Why not? :)
bubba replied to TheHunter's topic in General Hunting
If as you say 90 percent already do, why worry about the other 10 percent? I would think you would be happy to thin us out. So if I understand this correctly, you want to enact a law to force 10 percent of hunters to adhere to your way of thinking? Seems to me like a I know more than you and I will make you do what I want attitude. -

I make points you make dumb remarks wannabe. Funny part is in person neither would do what you do. I refer to that type as internet tough guys. -
Want to know who is pushing bo the most in NY State according to the ECO at my class yesterday? According to the DEC, the biggest lobbyist are clothing manufacturers. Just so the high and mighty's do not freak oit, this was a discussion after class and the students had left. Look it up the DEC is actually against BO laws. But again I realize I am stupid and my opinion does not matter to the higher ups here, but I will offer them regardless. If you are so much for BO, move to a state where it is mandatory, which are all states that have higher accident rates than NY. The reason we have lower rates is the hunter education and training. That is the proven effective solution in NY State, and the stance of the DEC.

it i s too bad you refuse to enter into a debate, and just prefer to say things that mean nothing, just to keep it going. I think you are a doc wannabe. -

the key isnt what you wear, it is educating people how to hunt safely. I shoud not have to be responsible for making my fellow hunters safe by wearing something so they wont shoot me. -
those amish people have more money that you and I do, well at least more than I do. Think about it no power bill every month no cable bill no phone bill no car payment no insurance payment. Add all that up every month and see what anyone would have.

funny thing is doc, I was not even responding to you. I was responding to another who was talking to me. I see who needs the last word or to try to twist the knife again. Have wonderful life if you can find it in yourself to let some of the hate go. Unless it is a real lame attempt at humor that isnt working. -

well it sure seems ot me that anyone who does not go along with the crowd is the red headed step child. Again I could not care less what any of you think of me. I am still waiting to hear how many all the rest have certified and do what you can to make sure your sport is carried on. I thought this was america where you could express an opinion and not be ridiculed for it. Oh well to each his own. -
Yes they do. I was in paying my school tax the other day, and there was an amish ahead of me paying his. It is based on supposedly ownig property, not what your religious beliefs are. BTW with my home, camp on the river and 550 acres of farm/hunting land, my taxes are just under 11 grand a year. I smile every time I write a check.

When I go tomorrow I Will take a pic of my 25 year certificate. You know what, feel free to attack me all you like. But I am very proud that in the past 25 years, I have not passed anyone who I did not feel was safe, and I have not had a student involved in a hunting accident from all those years. I start every class with stating if I do not feel safe in my brown carhartts in the woods with you, you do not get a certificate. We do 3 to four claasses a year at 25 per class maximum x 25 years. You do the math as to how many have been to my classes. I guess you believe that every person who teaches anythng has to believe everything they teach. I have had ECO in my classes saying they do not believe BO should be mandatory, and it is the stance of the DEC it is not necesary to be mandatory. But as I said you all think you know what goes on in my class or any other one. It is easy to sat back and second guess and again assume what goes on. If I gave my opinion about BO or you gave yours, you can be told not to teach any longer. We do not teach our opinions, we teach the curriculum. i could care less what anyone thinks about my volunteer time or my feeings about BO. My record stands for itself. How many peole have you certified to be able to hunt? Anyone?
