  1. Hi ed, sorry for the delay. I actually resize 270 brass as it is less of a resize, which eliminates a lot of the neck thickness problem. I have also sized 30-06 to 270 then 25, but it did not work as well as 270 and it is quite plentiful. Usually the 270 does not need length sizing as it is just a tad shorter than 25 until you shoot it. The other thing to remember is if you have a 270, or 30-06, be sure not to mix up the brass or loads. I have been grabbing one time shot 25-06 on other sites and have a couple hundred now. If you would like some resized 270's let me know I will send you some.
  2. mos tfactory ammo is loaded with mixed powders. That is why they never divulge the recipe so to speak. They load below the max loads as stated due to liability reasons. I would say they load mid range, so that the ammo will work in different firearms generically satisfactory for hunting loads.
  3. I now own two savage 99's both pre mil one in 300 which was my dad's. he bought it new in 1949. I just loaded some 150 grainers for tonight with IMR 4895. The othe ris a pre mil in 250-3000 savage. This cartridge is now known s the 250 savage. This one was my mothers. I have inherited both. The 99 has a scope on it, the 250 has open sights. I have taken a few deer with the 300, but none yet with the 250-3000. I prefer to look at them and fondly remember the times I had in my younger years hunting with my family. I reload for both and both shoot very well
  4. I am looking for a trigger assembly for a traditions tracker 209 muzzleloader. have you got a parts gun and willing to part with the trigger assembly, send me a pm.
  5. well I have a buddy who shoots 777 fffg in his sidekick and another who shoots pyrodex select in his traditions. The one who shoots pyrodex sure seems to have a lot less crud when swabbing and cleaning. I found 777 to be dirtier and harder to load for a second shot. Just my observations at the range. Oh by the way theone shootng 777 uses 75 grains which is very effective. The one with pyrodex shoots 90. I personally shoot the holy balck when I can get it., pyrodex when I cant. I am considering switching to blackhorn in the inlines. Setters4life, I thought I recognized that picture.
  6. I have sho tat the elbridge clubn with a frend of mine. I dont need ot bring the inline. I can bring the sidelock t/c hawen that I can drive tacs at 100 offhand as well as the new englander sidelock shotgun. Betewwn port leydon. gouverneur elbridge, I haequite a few trophis with both. So I guess I am sayng I can hold my own with either one.
  7. If you were going to shoot a gun for accuracy how else would you do it except off a bench? I do that with my encore and sidekick with pyrodex select. So it is no biggie. the powder doesnt make the shooter, the shooter makes the load that shoots that way regardless of what powder or projectile.
  8. one month 9/27 archery is here
  9. thinks I will pass on this one too.
  10. everyone preaches QDM and AR, but no one wants to use food plots to enhance antler growth and deer size. How many of you sit over a corn or alfalfa field on a farm? And how many leave some in the field for the deer? If you do please tell me the difference between the intended food plot deer come to or a field on agricultural land the deer come to. A bit off the subject, but again if you read the regs it says that an aerosol is not food. If you can grow it, it is fine. If you carry it in, it is illegal.
  11. and the way they will do so is by selling a tag for bow a tag fo rmuzzeoader a tag for handgun a tag for cross bow a tag for spear and one for slingshot. Lots of deer but each one comes with a price for each specialty tag.
  12. one of their tricks is to introduce new implements and methods, hoping to spark in interest. Over 35 years ago when I started hunting with a muzzleloader, there were very few. Keep in mind that was before there was a special season. Now look at the numbers when a special season, and an extra tag was introduced. Not to mention the money that goes into wildlife conservation programs with every muzzleloader that was sold. Our biggest danger will be loss of finances. The state gets federal money for every license sold. That federal money comes from an excise tax on all huntng equipment as started by the pittman robertsn act. Bottom line, the less licenses sold, the less money we get in the state. When the money goes down, the services go down. They will come up with a new way to entice hunters and sell licenses. Do I see the special seasons going away no. I see them increasing to the point that hunting becomes a speciaty like Drs have become. On the other hand, do I believe all the specialized hunting is good NO. It is a great way for people to fight internally amongst ourselves. I miss the days of going to camp, putting on a drive and harvesting a deer from it. Most of the guys at my families camp had a 30-30, 308 or 300 savage. I hunted with a muzzleloader from the time I was a kid. We did not worry which bullet had a ballistic tip or was over 3000 fps. We never had all the latest camo patterns. We wore either red plaid or green plaid wool and no one got shot even when there were more hunters in the woods. We did not worry about whether the g2's were too short or if the deer was 2 or 5 years old. We harvested them, we processed them and we ate them and we had a lot of laughs in each step. Now we have made hunting such a competition to get a bigger better deer over having a good time with friends and family. We all jockey for position as to what implement should be used what day of the week and hell we even argue over what day of the week season should start on. This type of attitude is killing hunting. We try to evolve super deer, so we have bragging rights. In the process of all of this, hunting in general has taken on a demeanor that is not conducive to regenerating itself. Young peole today watch all the hunting shows on tv and get the mindset that in a half hour you can kill a monster buck. If that does not happen the first time they are out, they lose interest. No one wants to teach basic hunting skills anymore. So in concusion, if hunting dies in the next 10 years, the only group to blame is us hunters for ruining their own sport. HUnting is not a sport any more. It is like most professional sports, it is a big business and the whole premise it was based upon is gone. I say make it much simpler. Hunting starts today and ends on a certain day. Use whatever implement you want to use. Buy a tag and have at it. We need to get BACK TO BASICS.
  13. ditto on the store brand windex when I am at the range between shots. When I get home, it is hot water and dawn dish detergent for a thorough cleaning. Then patces until dry, and g96 in and out. I went the bore butter route, and I pretty much ruined an encore barrel. I used remington bore cleaner and got it al scrubbed out. I threw away all of it I had. It my older guns I did as kits and blued or browned myself, I did use it when seasoning was needed. Bottom line after 35 years of muzzleloading shooting black powder 777 pyrodex and amost every other powder there was, STAY AWAY FROM BORE BUTTER AND OTHER PETROLEUM BASED PRODUCTS.
  14. put out a pile of apple cores and sit over them it is umm baiting. If you can grow it there fine, if it is carried there it is feeding, baiting per dec reps at my classes. Scents are fine cuz they arent ate.
  15. the reason for stoppig feeding was simple CWD. If one deer has cwd and eats from a concentrated food pile aka a pile of corn put out which by the way is baiting, you can unfect a whole heard. The prion is spread through saliva. One deer eats and then the next does in the same spot poof they have it. In a field, it i smuch less probable a deer will eat in exactly the same spot. I hear this every time I do a hunter ed class directly form the dec.
  16. I can purchase my license online and apply forall the things and not go to a store or wait in line etc etc etc.
  17. how does one read the article? It is one sentence and no link.
  18. dont give maybe's give definitely's. The data would suggest that it isnt better wearing orange, in fact it is shows it is not as safe, if a state where it is mandated has more accidents per hunter than a state where it is not mandated. We simply do not have the incidents where it would even be considered to make it mandatory. In other words not enough poeple get hurt in a year to make anyone care. When your debates start with perhaps or maybe, there is no fact in it, just theory. I feel that bo is as big a gimmick as having the have the newest camo patterns to hunt. Two questions 1 How did people ever go to the woods and hunt before there was blaze orange and ever get home? 2 If BO is safer how do more people get shot in it then out of it? I realize no one will actually answer these questions with fact because there is no fact to answer them with. And the real ianswer no one will say because it disproves your theory. wztirem you said I can argue allI want but the fact is BO saves lives. Show me the data to prove that because all the Data I get from DEC and form other ststes shows it is actualy not the case. Prove it to me.
  19. If you find that scenario plese post it again my questions is not answered. How are we safer than the states where orange is mandatory?
  20. then why is our record better than the states with mandatory orange? Because we wear orange? hmm
  21. Ha-ha ..... maybe the wife is right ...... maybe. By the way, you don't have to be climbing trees to get in trouble. I remember one time when I had a small tree wedged across my ATV trail. So I decided to try to snap the thing in two and drag the two halves off the trail. I guess I got a little too intent on what I was trying to do and got into a position where I was pulling on the thing like a bow limb with all my weight and leg power at work. Well, naturally the thing broke all at once and sent me back into another tree so hard it knocked the wind out of me. It was a lot like your fall, and I had to lay there for a while just to get my breathing back to normal. Same deal, I was in the middle of the hill with absolutely no one around and no one even knowing where I was (I didn't have the ATV with me that time). I guess I was quite fortunate that nothing in my back broke because I did hit right on my spine. Now that WAS dumb! But I didn't climb any trees to almost do the same thing. :-[ maybe we need a law that says no breaking trees in trails.
