  1. Not defending the guy, but he has a wall of nice tophies for a guy who can't shoot. But even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while.
  2. it is the pre pre rut. It is like seeing turkeys in the end of march, early april strutting, or like young guys on a friday afternoon waiting to go out and attempt the mating rituals. Bucks have nothing to do with the rut, it is the does that control it. Kind of like the friday night thing lol. The bucks are just excited and getting ready for the whole encounter. I hope it 5 days they are that way when archery starts here in the north.
  3. could you imagine the number of people waiting in line first day to get a license. The system would crash. There would be fights, people would shoot at each other and you would not dare cross over the line on the floor the other guy was standing on. Other than orange, it sounds like a day hunting in the southern zone. (I am just kidding folks, no need to panic.) But seriously, there would be such a rush the first day it would crash the system. I do agree and have said several times, there should be no left over permits when people are gettng turned down. Hand them out with the license sales. People might be more willing to spend the 10 bucks, if they have to. Last year I had three preference points and got turned down and a friend who had no points got a permit for our area. I did get one mailed to me later, which should never happen.
  4. I think I would ask if you couldl take it to a local agent and have it done. At the speed the state goes, you may not have it back by season.
  5. Well I guess I struck a nerve. I shot the deer in th neck and broke her neck due to the fact she moved and put herr hed down to eat down as I shot. If you must know,I would have preferred a clean miss to that shot. BTW a neck shot is a lethal shot.A lot of people use it all the time. I got lucky that time. Since I had owned that gun for 15 or so years before that, yeah I had shot it. No one is perfect. But with that being the ony time since 1977 I had to take a second shot with a ml, I would say I am doing well. And the deer never left her spot. Within a minute she was dead after I reloaded, which is better than chasing a wounded deer for hours and the coyotes end up eating them. Did you shoot it once or twice before you took it out? Where did I say you were stupid. I did not use that word at all in my reply. So by your reply, I ASSUME you do not shoot open sites well. Maybe a little more time practicing would have got you past that. I answered your question now answer mine. How many times were you shooting the gun before you went to hunt with it? You took it and hunted with it to see if you would like hunting with open sited. And you accuse me of beng unethical. That is hilarious. Whether you liked it or not, you were willing to wound a deer with a gun you had LIMITED experience with and had not hunted with open sites. There is a good combination. And just as an FYI, I hunt in the northern zone (rifle) and I use a ml exclusively. I know Mlers. I use a flintlock with open site during ml special seasons and my encore during regular season. I am more than sure you wont answer because you are making yourself look foolish, you did not need my help.
  6. I guess that separates the hunters from the fair weather hunters
  7. I have a buddy who just moved near the seaway diner in wadd. We are looking to hunt closer to his house a bit
  8. I dot get where you guys think it is so cold here. I have taken deer in late ml in mid december and have it be 60 out. it is no colder here than there in december. Hell the swamp doesnt even freeze over until late august. And where I hunt it is quite thick. My point was more toward the whole attitude thing.
  9. In the nothern zone, when the special ml season started, it ran concurrent with the last week of archery. In other words it was always the week before regular season started when archery was also running. It was patched round balls only and primitive eithe r flint or #11 caps. If you took a deer during the ml season, you had to use your regular buck tag and were done for the season. It did not go over well, and the state saw a way to make a buck. If you took deer with with the ml, for 10 bucks you got a replacement tag for regular season. The state again saw a way to make money, so they added other proectiles. You could always use an inline, the only thing regulated was the projectile and ignition, which was flintlock or #11 cap. I know what you are thinking, but CVA made an inline called a blazer. It shot #11 caps and was inline. The areas were also limited in the North. Well again the state saw a way to make money and expanded the area and allowed scopes. Then it went to all projectiles and ignition and a lot more areas to hunt. But in the long run, it helped the state. All the mlers sold generated revenue through the pittman-robertson act. Plus lots of licenses and tags were sold. Now in my area of the north, we have a week before regular season and a week after regular season. In the late season, yo ucan use any tag you have left including dmp bow muzzle and regular tags. Now everyone I know owns a ml of one type or another. It is looked at more as the start of regular season.
  10. I have harvested more deer with a soot blecher than anything I own. All but one were one shot kills. I am talking since 1976 when I got my first sidelock Hawken. I shot t for over ayear before I hunted with it. I had to shoot one twice due to a high shot. The bullet broke the deer's neck. She just layed there, so I shot her again. I make sure I can make a clean ethical shot with a gun I have practiced with and know how it shoots. I cringe when guys say they buy a ML the night before season and shoot it once or twice and hunt witha load some buddy said would work. I think of the deer that are wounded and never recovered. This is not a lecture, but you took a buddies gun you knew nothing about and headed to the woods. Then you were sounding like you were in a sense bragging about it. You knew nothng abut the gun and I bet never shot it before you took off with it. Would you borrow a buddies bow and 4 arrows and head out knowing nthing about it? Ok I am off my soap box.
  11. I am so glad I live in the north where people get along and respect each others property. Oh yeah we dont shoot at each other either. Anyone want to come up and see how relaxing hunting can be? You can be my pesonal guest. My neighbors and I have a mutual agreement for recovery. I never thought to take a tape and measure how close to the line they were when they shot.
  12. welcome aboard. I am from the oburg area, but plan to do soe hunting in the waddington area this fall. Good luck
  13. Hey guys, nice to see neighbors here. I am from the Ogdensburg area. I hunt 6a nd 6c. 6C near trout lake. 6a state land and some private land too.
  14. So do I. In fact my best friends are my hunting buddies. But it is our sport we are protecting. And as I have stated before per the DEC hunting acidents happen whan someone is breaking the law. So it may be your life you save in the process
  15. DEC doesnt impose fines judges do.
  16. quantity is as good as quality. I di dnot say I shot fawns. I said I have shot big rcks small racks and even a big deer with a small rack. Deer size to me is more important than rack size.
  17. yo uscrew up you are out and be prepared to explain to the dec how and why you screwed up.
  18. I prefer the taste of venison to the look of antlers. Do I have some nice racks sure. Have I harvested small bucks and even does sure. I find no difference in the taste of the meat.
  19. budget constraints. The state had to buy cheaper ink.
