  1. Again I must say there is a NY above the thruway. Over the years I have seen the season in the northern zone get longer with early archery starting 9/27 and late ml ending around mid december. I have taken a few very nice mature bucks over the years. As far as these suggestions go, I do not see much value to them in my area. Putting ar in my area is a joke. I love how no one wants so shoot a 1.5 spike because he needs to mature, but have no problem shooting a button buck and sticking a dmp on it. I do not see how it is legal for one and not the other. Just my observations. In my area, I get a dmp about every 5 years. I own land, but do not use that to get a dmp. To me that is like a privilege. As far as I am concerned the land owner privilege for that should go away. A fair lottery for everyone. When I see approximately 25 deer a season, I am not going to be happy to have my time shortened and be told what I can and can not shoot. I may as well not buy a license. I spend a lot of money on seed gas and other things to make my land better for deer and then better for the hunters. I have 250 acres and control of a neighboring 200 for a total of 450 acres. We all voluntarily let small bucks walk and if you shoot a button buck on my land that is a 100 dollar fine. You would be surprised how picky guys get then.. Not only do the young bucks walk, the young does do also as no one wants to take the chance. However they walk across the property lines and get blasted by the neighbors. Other than me being able to say I did not shoot a young buck, nothing is accomplished. The only exception is a new hunter has the freedom to harvest anything legal. Show me proof that it works and I will still say no.
  2. I find after the rut, I hunt the food areas. The bucks want to replenish all they lost running their butts off literally. Now they need to replenish for winter. However that being said, They seem to do so after dark and really hole up during the day. I place cams on the feeding areas now and see what is happening.
  3. Come to think of it, my job entails traveling all over the county daily. i am not seeing deer out in fields either.
  4. your opinion but not necessarily the opinion of dec leo
  5. This years hunting weather is my whine. Either pouring and windy or cold and windy. I dont know maybe I am getting old. yesterday 7 degrees with 30 mph winds. The wood stove sure felt good.
  6. Not going down that road again
  7. In my area, sightings are low also. Same reasons over abundant amounts of food. My sugar beet plots and apple trees have not been touched. No need for a lot of travel. so they are hanging close. Mostly in my wetland swamp. You go near there and you can not step without stepping on some sort of nut on the ground. My cameras pre season had a lot of pics. In a 5 day time, I had 78 pics of deer between bedding and feeding areas. Seems when the food hit the ground, they shut off. I am thinking this weekend after dinner thursday a few drives through the swamp and heavy pines are in order.
  8. Ok where to start. There are basically two types of people who shoot deer. 1. Those who willing knowingly break the law and have no regard for anyone else (poachers etc) Will they care of their license is pulled? Not at all. If they have no regard for the law why would they for that. Chances are if they even have a license, the tags have been used several times. This is the same as a felony convicted dwi alcoholic cares if they have a license. Both will continue their current behavior until it is no longer possible or they kill someone. Then maybe they will be put away where society is safe from them. i look at this person as every time they poach a deer, they are stealing one from you and I. 2 A hunter The person who hunts legally and ethically. Unfortunately they have a grey area in between them. When a person gets caught doing the ethically right thing which may cross a legal boundary, I could not begin to tell you how many go back to hunting and how many hunt anyway. The text book definition from NY state hunter ed for ethical is doing the right thing even if you knew you would not get caught doing the wrong thing. I realize you are trying to draw me into a discussion about the validity of revoking someones privileges and how ineffective it is. My stance if a person is a law abiding citizen, they will follow the law. If they become hardened to the system and hunt anyway, they never were that ethical or legal in the first place. This is like the old put a guy in prison he becomes a criminal. Personally in all the dec tickets I handled over the years, I only revoked one guys privileges. Shooting after hours with the aid of a light loaded gun in the vehicle under the influence of alcohol, shooting across a highway,as well as possession of an untagged doe where there were no dmp's. I am just glad no one was shot when he shot from the drivers side of the vehicle out the passenger window with a passenger with him. This was his 4th violation in 6 years. Did I stop him from doing what he was doing? I doubt it. Well I did for the 6 months he spent in jail. I have not heard about him since. I think he left the area.
  9. I am not saying that what is being talked about is wrong. I am simply pointing out the possible consequences. I am also not advocating to turn them in. But if you do so and by chance a leo hears and investigates there could be a lot of explaining to is all. Every day we face choices. My luck i would get caught. I got into one of these discussions in the past regarding the legality of having your rifle loaded after legal hunting hours. I was called everything but a human and was threatened. My opinions on these types if subjects come from years as a judge. Me petsonally if you had appeared in front of me in this situation i would dismiss it if you seemed legit. Just also remember that over15 years myself and other judges and leo have heatd it all. I also realize most who act all tough in here if they had to appear for this would be asking for a break. Also with the new unsafe act if charged and convicted of a misdemeanor you risk losing all your guns especially if the crime involved s gun. Just trying to point these things out. Belo lunch break is over. I will answer you later. Sent from my LGL35G using Tapatalk 2
  10. And the possbility os losing hunting privileges for 5 years Sent from my LGL35G using Tapatalk 2
  11. Just so we are clear, I am not in the persuasion to have a hard on for guys. If you are that is fine. My post simply was saying they could be starting to yard up. Not everything on here is about you even though you like to think it is. Stop being a jerk people would stop posting like they do. For you to say weather does not effect deer movement was honestly foolish at best. Now go play.
  12. Does anyone else find it humorous that when you do things right and try to pass that on you get called names? Kind of like being a conservative and saying things are messed up in the govt right now.
  13. nope they do not yard up in the winter have bachelor groups in the summer separate in the fall and the rut. I winder what triggers that. That being said, where do the deer yard for the winter? By this time in season, I frequent those areas more. I am guessing the swamp you speak of. Find the trails in and out and hang out.
  14. sunrise to sunset is legal hunting hours look it up in the charts. Sunset was as mentioned long before the time you say you shot. Walking out at 4:50 light was scarce Not to get on a soap box here, but it is up to you to know the hunting laws before you go afield. Nice deer congrats
  15. or every other post dissing the guy for what he names a thread.
  16. yes how dare they do their jobs bas&*^ds
  17. go to my settings manage ignore add anyone you want
  18. I switched ot hornady xtp 430 240 grain in a green 50 cal harvestor crush rib sabot. Deadly easy to load and cheap. I buy the bullets in bulk 100 per box for 26 bucks and 100 sabots for 13. so for 40 bucks you have 100 shots. I also mold a 430 lead round nose 240 grain I use at the range and also for hunting. Both work very well.
  19. at our old camp in the adirondacks we had a similar stove. You opened a piece on the front to light it. Well my buddy lit it he thought it lit and closed the front after. After a couple minutes nothing happened. He open the front piece again and the oxygen hit the smoldering paper towel and poof it blew also. The flames shot out the hole in the front about 3 feet. We got it closed back up. the pipes got cherry red before it settled down. I was scared to death as we were about a mile back in and no access for the fire dept which was 45 minutes away anyway Luckily it settled down. The black smoke rolled out of the chimney for 20 minutes or so. After that my dad decided a wood stove was a good idea.
  20. Most including me will tell you they are junk. They fragment and lack good penetration. Maybe at slower speeds out of the hawken they may be alright. I shot two deer with them out of my H&R sidekick. Performance was terrible with 100 grains of 777. One I had to shoot three times after tracking it about 400 yards after a broad side double lung hit. At 50 yards the bullet did not exit. I hope you have better luck than I did.
  21. I know what they are and I know dec only gave them to two farms in st law county
  22. I forgot one rule at camp. The only thing that smokes inside is the wood stove
