Gun shots at first light opening day of bow season sz
erussell replied to Dutchess hunter's topic in Bow Hunting
Need to start arressting those who poach deer with there cars and leave them laying on the road. They are decimating my deer herd around my house. Three dead doe in the last month all within i/2 mile to 100 ft from my house. It's getting out of control, think I'll call the DEC tommarrow and complain. -
Looks like a first day of gun buck in Broome county, antlers shot of, shot full of holes, and an arrow sticking out of its head from the bone head who tried to take a head shot on it the day before. It never amazes me the shots bow hunters try to take. We shot a billy buck first day back a few yrs ago that had an arrow to one side of the shoulderblades down through the back strap and was sticking out its brisket.. We sat there forever trying to figure out what that white thing on its back was before it dawned on us and I told my brother to shoot him.

150 grains of 777 and 230 grain xtp hollowpoint or my 0/6 would nock all 4 deer for a loop. With a bow maybe #3 if he stuck around long enough.

Disregard, I must have been having a bad day or something. I went back with another box and at 100 yrds I could cover the group with a quarter. I also did a little rapid fire at 100yrds, shooting as fast as the crosshairs settled behind the shoulder, sitting on the ground off my knee and had a fist size group right behind the deer targets shoulder. So Im happy with that

Got to my stand Saturday night around 3 pm with 30 mph gusts. While putting up my climber in the apple orchard, something told me to turn around and there are 3 fawns running helter skelter right at me. I froze and they put on the breaks about 10 ft from me then turned tail and split out of there. I climbed up as fast as I could and got settled in. 10 minutes later I had a billy buck and his fat momma feeding within 15 yrds of me on the apples. I tried to convince myself to shoot her because she was one of the biggest doe I had seen in a long time but her billy still had spots down his back. I'm sure he was weened but he still needed mommas care so I let her go. I'm getting soft in my old age. They left after an hour of gorging on apples. After the 3rd tree fell down in the high wind and deciding I couldn't shoot straight with all the swaying my stand was doing I left and headed for a warm bowl of soup. Did not go out Sunday. Sat home and rattled my brain a little sighting in the 0/6 off the back porch.

I will say though that the gun performed flawlessly this time. I didn't have one jam out of the 20 rounds I fired. I gave it a really good cleaning the last time I shot it.

I practice my own version of antler restrictions, like to shoot atleast an 8 point with a 16 inch spread. It results in a few yrs without a buck but it makes me happy.Ive even shot the does bucks were chasing around my stand before. If shooting a spike makes you happy I have no problem with that either. I do think some sort of antler restrictions for the southern zone would be a good thing. (I cannot speak for the Northern zone, they have a whole nother hunting reality there). Gives the bucks a chance to put a few yrs on them and puts more bucks in the woods to harvest. PA has had them for a few yrs now and before AR's there deer had pitifully small racks. Now they consistently most yrs shoot bigger buckslike these biggest from last yr. 207in, 210in, and 190in in that order. Now im sure most of these bucks came off QDM properties and not off some stateland.

Well got out with a box of remington c lox 150 grainers. 50 yrds was great, could cover my best group with a quarter. I moved back to 100 and everything went to hell, group opened up alot. The gun is a carbine with an 18 inch barrel and 1:10 twist. The 165's I shot before the 150's shot better groups at 100 yrds. I might go back to them or try the 180's to see if my groups tighten up even more . Anyone have any thoughts.

Was taken off the Northeast big Buck club web page. They have a good record, I would trust the story. You should check the NY and PA photos and see some of the Slob bucks shot in NY and PA last yr. Here's another photo of him. http://www.bigbuckclub.com/

shot a big 8 in Alabama back in Jan of 1999 and the temp was in the 70's. He came through chasing a herd of doe around. So they will move, I like to concentrate on water and apple trees if it gets warm.

Savage's always seems to beat out all the other guns in gun tests I have seen. I prefer Remi's but thats just me. Savages seem to be the most accurate of the bolt rifles and cost less but not cheaply made. Here's a review of the Axis http://www.gunblast.com/Savage-Axis243.htm

As seen on Northeast bigbuck club. Nice start to the season Possible new CT archery non-typical state record taken in 2011. Green score is better that 225". We'll post more information as it becomes available. Check back soon

I just remembered! I have to wash all my hunting gear this weekend.
erussell replied to burmjohn's topic in General Hunting
If you stay down wind you could take a dump in your camo and the deer wont smell you. I just don't have good luck with keeping the wind in my face, if I get in a stand with the wind in my face ten minutes later it will be blowing the other direction. I get almost religious about no scent while bow hunting. I wash my hunting cloths and hang them outside for 2 days to dry and de scent. and I wash them after every use( depending on how sweaty i get ) and hang them out again. I shower with the green soap ( cheap and seems to work as good as the more expensive stuff ) and use a liberal amount of scentless deoderant. I get out of the shower into clean and scentfree sweats and sandels. I sit on plastic bags in the car and when I get to my hunting spot I take off the sweats and wipe myself and my equipment down with scentfree wipes ( which some mornings takes a bit of building up the courage to do ) I then spray the outside of my clothes and boots with scentaway and apply a few sprays of fox P ( or buck P depending on what day it is ) to my boots for extra measure. It's a royal pain in the butt, but I have had deer so close to me on the ground before, with my wind in there face, I could have taken a few steps and reached out and stabbed them with the arrow. It is a bit extreme for some people but it allows me to hunt and not go checking to wind every 10 seconds to see where its blowing. Does it work all the time? No, sometime I get busted but Im not sure if its my scent or they just picked me off. With gun I'm not so picky, as long as I don't smell like a dirty billy goat Im fine and I try to keep the wind in my face alot more. I havent found anything that covers up black powder and gun oil smells yet. I'm suprised scentlock hasn't come up with a scentlock gun cover yet. -
Checked the apple trees yesterday and there are 6 new rubs on arm size trees around them that were not there last week. Think I will defenitely sit here 1st day.

They took me a while to figure out how to tune them to my bow but after an hour or so of messing with themI got them shooting great.

Depends on the skill of the hunter. Not trying to brag but I have taken 5 doe with head shots and all were DRT with no wasted meat. My only complaint is its a bit messy with the watermellon effect of a 230 grain hallow point in the mellon. It's just like any other shot you have to know your limitations. Even a broadside shot could be unethical if you are sighted in for 200 yrds and your blasting away at 300 hopeing to hit them.

I picked up a couple packages of Muzzy MX-3 low profile 100 grainers the other day. Wondering if anyone else has used them. I usually go with 75 grain 3 blade muzzy or the 90 grain 4 bladers but thought I would give these a try. What kind of damage did you get with them?

That thing looks pissed!!!! You do know shotguns and 22's made falconing obsolete right

I passed on a 10 point one time that probably had 14inch mainbeams. All his points were pushing an inch long. It was the weirdest rack ive ever seen. Neighbor shot him the following yr and he was a 12 point with 2 inch tines all the way around. He took the jaw bone to his friend who is a Game Warden and he estimated it to be 2.5 yrs old.

who hunts state land?and what have you killed on SL?
erussell replied to arrow nocker's topic in Deer Hunting
There are no deer on stateland so stay home and watch football There are deer on stateland , I find it advantageous not to talk about what I see or even what stateland I hunt. Ive learned the hard way when I was younger that loose lips sink ships. All I can say is scout every last inch in the off season preferably with snow on the ground. You will be able to see where the deer are all the time. Know where the other hunters park and access the land and use this to your advantage, even if you have to walk the long way around in the dark to get to it. Stay off the trails and I dont mean parrallel them either. If a walking or snowmobile trail go's through it hunters will use them, I find the deer know this to and avoid the area.Though I have seen exceptions to that rule 99% of the time if you are within 300 yrd's of a trail you probably won't see deer. Get a topo map or google map the areas and look for areas with limited access and evil terrain and you can almost garrentee it is only hunted by the most diehard of hunters. And once you find a good spot it doesnt hurt to get a little mischevious and redirect everyones attention to the other side of the stateland with fake massive rubs, and scrapes along the road and off through the woods in the opposite direction. Not that I would do that -
Hang it close to the road and around houses. They are getting plastered all over the roads around where I live There is a dead fawn just down the road from my house that looks like someone rolled it up like a cigerete
