Well ya'll must be smarter than me, I for one can't tell any 4 points apart from the others. I would be hard pressed to say for sure that a four point I saw this yr was the same one I saw last yr. I would also be hard pressed to say the deer in the 1st pic was 2.5. as skinny necked as he is. If it is for sure the same deer as last yr and he is 3.5 yrs old youve got some serious problems with genetics or nutrition on your hunting grounds. I hunt in the overhunted and poor nutrition county of Broome and most of the 2.5 deer Ive shot there were between 130 and 150 lbs. He looks to barely tip the scales at 100. Shoot him and put him in the freezer.

Shoot, the only Grouse Ive ever been able to shoot have been sitting in tree's. I figure if your good enough to sneak up on one of those suckers then have at it. As far as DEC stocked tame chickens go, I wouldn't know. I went on a hunt for them once and the only ones we ever saw were the dead ones people couldn't find or that starved to death during the winter not sure which since they were frozen solid. The way I see it they were put there to shoot and you paid for it so shoot them. Which is more ethical shooting tame chickens out of the air or on the ground? I guess its up to each individual hunter.

Warmest Hunting Boots ?
erussell replied to fasteddie's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
I made the mistake once buying 2000 gram thinsulate rubber boots ,once. After about a 1/2 mile of stalking I had to sit down and rest because my legs were whipped. Now they are strictely for ice fishing, but some of the long walks throught the snow covered ice still kick my butt , my feet def stay warm though. -

Rubber boots with a lifetime warranty? They are going to lose there ass! -
I hear you there, can happen with gun to. The neighbor shot at a super wide, heavy 8 point on top of the hill I was hunting. After the second shot I figured the deer was down and settled back into the tree and looked the opposite direction. Well I heard something coming down the mountain and turned around just as he crossed an wide opening in front of me and headed into the thickest crap you can think of 40 yrds to my right. Here's this giant 8 sitting there looking at me at 40 yrds and I can't get a clear shot. Well he looks back up the hill so I jump to my feet trying deserately to find a clear shot. I take two steps to my right and in the heat of the moment I neglected to rest on the tree to steady the shot and missed him. He ran passed me doing a 100mph and I tracked him in the leaves to the boarder of PA. That was the luckiest buck in the world that day, 3 shots at him and all clean misses all under 50 yrds. Ran into the neighbor back out at the road and he carried on for 20 minutes about how big the rack was. All I wanted to do was forget about how big he was.

This is why I do not have a trail cam out. If I saw something like that on it I wouldn't be able to get anything done, let alone sleep.

Did a little sneak and peak around my stand I placed in a funnel between a swamp and Oaks the other day in the rain. And there are a ton of rub's. I don't think I will sit this stand till 1st week of November. Will wait till my does pull the bigger bucks off the neighbors property then sit it. The 1st day stand will be in the apple trees, they are so loaded that the branches are almost touching the ground,

Here's to hopeing they got Tick,s on thier a--es and a good case of bird flu from all the nasty skeeters this yr. -
There is more to the story, North Carolina has imported to many Commies from the Blue states. His only crime was not bowing down to the alter of the state of North Carolina. They killed them to test them for CWD because there is no other way to test for it. BS you commie pcs of s---. How about quarintining (spelling ) them? This was some overpaid southern hick douche bag in government who use to get his a-- kicked in school every day trying to make an example of a defensless citizen and get a raise. If it had been my land and they came in like that it would have been ruby ridge all over again. We'll good job North Carolina you trampled the rights of one of your own for nothing and I bet PETA will be all over this one. Serves them right.

Better read again you can leave stands on stateland as long as it doesnt hurt a tree. As far as game cameras go im not sure, it states not to litter carry out what you carry in and i don't think game cameras are considered litter. Have not found anything that specifically mentions them. Not that I would suggest leaving anything on public property. Some people take the public part to the extreme and may take it home with them. w. No person shall erect, construct, install, maintain, store, discard or abandon any structure or any other property on State lands or subsequently use such structure or property on State lands, except if the structure or property is authorized by the department or is: 1. a geocache that is labeled with the owner's name and address and installed in a manner that does not disturb the natural conditions of the site or injure a tree; 2. a camping structure or equipment that is placed and used legally pursuant to this Part; 3. a legally placed trap or appurtenance that is placed and used during trapping season; 4. a tree stand or hunting blind that does not injure a tree, is properly marked or tagged with the owner's name and address or valid hunting or fishing license number, and is placed and used during big game season, migratory game bird season, or turkey season; or 5. a wildlife viewing blind or stand that is placed for a duration not to exceed thirty (30) days in one location per calendar year, does not injure a tree, and is properly marked or tagged with the owner's name and address or valid hunting or fishing license number. x. Looks like I better get a few replacements to.

Poor gimpy, may he rest in peace.

Some Groveland deer plus Tresspassers
erussell replied to fasteddie's topic in Trail Camera Pictures
I would say the deer trail you were taping was actually a pot trail, follow it into the tall grass and I bet it will lead to some taller grass. Have run across this several times while scouting in the fall. Its picking time so you will probably only find a few empty buckets since they seem to be to lazy to bring them with. Almost time for the black helocopters to start flying. I mowed a section of a small field one time on my familys prop. to plant a stand of winter rye and the next day the DEA was there nocking on my grandmas door. -
I sent them an e-mail asking them why. We'll see if they reply. I hope they aren't planing on making them all like that, I'll change to something else. There are a few nock off buscuit type rests also might have to take a look at them.
-
Your right no replacement for the kill shot. I almost bought that one to, glad I didn't. It doesnt make sense to provide a replacement biscuit for all your rest's except one. Especially since the cheaper model has one and the killshot which cost more doesn't. Brilliant sale's Idea, I hope they fired the braniac who came up with that. So WB buyer beware dont get the killshot.
-
Here's a secret I learned from a bow shop. Just get the old whisker biscuit, they cost less and work the same. I had to buy another one this yr because the horizontal adjustment screw wouldn't losen and I stripped the bolt trying to loosen it. But prior to that I had it on there for 3 yrs and never made any adjustments and it worked fine and the bow stayed tuned all that time. So far I have been able to find replacements for all models on Cabelas. So I don't know what model you have but you might want to look there. http://www.trophyrid...om/service/faq/

I work third shift so I get up around noon and head out everyday. I make it a priority to get out everyday till the tags are full. My wife is more than willing to let me out of the house everyday for a few hours for a reward of meat in the freezer. Now just don't tell her how many I could have shot but let walk, oR i MIGHT GET GROUNDED. 15yrds for a four point is a long shot and out of range. This yr though I might have a little more trouble getting out because my wife graduated and got a job. So I may have to get a ground blind and drag the little one out with me.

Been reading a book and it has a section on deers vision. It brings up the whole controversy over whether or not a deer can see ultraviolet light. I think the whole UV brightner controversy is just a ploy to get hunters to buy another hunting product. This statement by John Coulbourn say's " The notion that deer see ultraviolet wave lenghths better than other mammals inc Humans is unlikely. He also feels the pictures used in UV advertisements are useless. saying, " No organism with single lens eye could simultaneously focus on red and green and ultraviolet. Either it would see an uv image with a blurred red green haze or the reverse. Not being able to focus on an image or even detect target movement in this region of the of the spectrum means evolution would not select for this capability.Further more the graph seems to have a fabricated curve because its peak at or below 300 milimicron. Such a major discovery would have set the visual reasearch community on its ear." Dr Silas White say's " The concept of deer being able to detect clear images from ultraviolet reflections difficult to beleive. In vertibrate studie so far, in no cases does there appear to be much if any sensetivity to radiant energy in the uv end of the spectrum. Since uv light has such a short wavelenght it is extremely unlikely deer can detect a clearly focused image of uv reflection. it is unlikely that if uv were indeed an adequate stimulas, which is doubtful, deer or humans would be capable of perceiving a crisp image resulting from reflections of such disparate wavelengths as those in the typical deer woods background and uv reflections. What does everyone else think.

Hunters siding with Antis....sickening
erussell replied to WNYBuckHunter's topic in General Chit Chat
No they don't take but they leave one hell of a mess you should see the state land by my house. -
There are a lot of Oaks where I hunt in Broome and they are doing fair with acorns this yr. Last yr was a banner yr with 80 % of the oaks dropping acorns well into December. Which I find to be annoying, I would rather have one tree in the whole forest that was dropping nuts not all of them. I find the deer tend to feed like a cow when this happens and haphazardly wonder through the woods eating acorns which is quite frustrating when stand hunting during bow season.

All scientific evidence that I have read says a deers vision is in black and white and shades of gray and possibly some blue due to the amount of rods and cones in there eye's. A silver barrel would probably blend in with whatever other objects in the deers environment that are the same color. What a deers eyes are keyed into like all prey animals is movement. Get the barrell pointing in the deers general direction when you hear them coming and minimal movement will be required when the target has been 100% identified as a deer. Now for Turkey, coyote, and fox I would not suggest a silver colored barrel.

Ah the poopchute shot, always a controversal shot. If I was close with a high power rifle I was confident with, and was shooting a bonded bullet that won't explode on impact, I would take the shot if it was all I was presented with. Have not done this yet though, I find it better to wait and see if they turn and they have 98% of the time. A bow shot would be out of the question for me. If you missed the vitals or arteries you will have a bloodless tracking job to do because of such a high hit which is always unpleasent. And it could take some time for the deer to expire where it could wonder into someones back yard and die with an arrow sticking out of its arse giving hunters a bad name. It can be an effective shot with a rifle and I have seen it done a few times with a shotgun also. The key is a round that is sturdy and powerful enough to reach the vitals. I have however done a few reverse texas heart shots and 2 out of the 3 dropped in there tracks. Still a messy cleaning job though.
