So for my week off I saw 32 doe and 5 non shooter bucks. Though a nice 7 point was within 10 yrds of my stand and I held off hoping he will make it through the season and be back next yr as a 3 yr old. Passed on two 4's a spike a 7 and a 3 point. Ended up mercy killing a 4 point with an arrow sticking out of him and getting a new tag from the game warden. Also saw 3 bears, one much to my suprise that I rattled in. -
And practice doesnt stop once the season starts. I shoot atleast ten arrows a day during the bow season also. It really improves your confidence when just an hour earlier you were puting them in the vitals at 10 yrds out to 30 yrds. Same goes for gun, i plink with the 22 to improve my shooting all summer and shoot atleast 4 boxes of ammo through the rifle and 100 rounds with the muzzleloader to keep proficient. It just doesn't make sense to spend all that money and time and not be able to bring a deer home when you pull the trigger because you dont know how to shoot straight under pressure.

Nice recovery, where was the shot at?

Well I just got off my week long bowhunting sabatical. and It was for the most part, minus being sick and almost drowning in my own snot, I good experiance. Though I have to say I am getting a bit perterbed with my fellow bowhunters. Unlike 308 It has been my experiance that the gun season leaves more dead bodies in the woods than bow around where I hunt on account that after 25 yrs of hunting I have only found two deer that I could definately say were killed by a bow. Well that count went up this week. It started Wednesday with a four point that hobbled up to my stand with an arrow sticking out of his neck. There was so much damage to the neck muscles that he couldnt raise his head. He was skin and bones and I couldn't let him suffer any more so I took him out at 10 yrds as he tried to eat an apple. Double lung and he dropped in a pile where I shot him, apperently he was on his last legs. I pulled the arrow out of his neck and the wound looked old and infected and he smelled terrible. I put my tag on him and threw him in the back of my truck and took him home. I called the game warden and he came out the next day and gave me a new tag. He didn't want to put that stinky thing in his truck so I dragged it out through the woods behind my house for the yotes to eat. On my way down the bank behind my house I was startled to see a deer laying there and walked over to it. It was a spike I saw crossing the road by my house all summer, gut shot and dead a few days.So I grabbed him by the leg and dragged him to the bottom of the hill to so it wouldnt stink up my yard. I can only imagine what the gun hunters are going to think when they come across a pile of bow shot deer laying in the woods. I hope the coyote's get to them before Saturday. Game warden just shook his head when he saw the buck and said this yr is bad for lost deer. He's heard of a lot. So if you are a bow hunter, that next time you pull that bow back are you 100% sure you are making the best shot possible. A tag sandwich is better than a maginal shot and a wounded buck. Same goes for gun hunters too. You guys are up next.

Exactley. Put on a down jacket and run around in 40 degree weather for a while and see if you don't want to die. Deer will be more active in the cold, I prefer a light snow also. Nothing heavy, they tend to hole up around where I hunt till a storm passes over. Activity will definately spike if it gets below 40. -
Paunch blood is darker than liver blood and usually consists of stomach material that is light brown in nature. What you described sounds like a paunch hit. You did the smartest thing you could have done and not go after the deer at all. It will not be an easy tracking job but more than likely you will find him dead in his first bed if you wait 6-8 hours.

Here's some pics incase anyone was interested and didn't know.

If you haven't lost a deer bowhunting, you either dont shoot at many or you haven't bow hunted for very long. If you hunt long enough you will lose deer it's a fact of Bow hunting life. People get excited and " lose there mind " when buck fever takes over. Overcoming this and following through on your shots will increase your kill shots. If I ever stop " redlining" when I have a deer infront of me I'll probably quit hunting. Almost having a heartattack is part of the fun of deer hunting. 12 ft and 20 yrds sounds like a flat enough angle to get both lungs on a high hit, though I could be wrong. Sounds more like you either hit infront of the shoulder high or shot over the back bone. Both shots are survivable. I shot a big 8 back 8 yrs ago the had a perfect slug hole through the top of theridge of backbone. One inch lower and I never would have had a chance to shoot him.

I use to use my vacation during summer and just go out in the evening and hunt. But then I would see a monster on my way to work and I would be worthless all night thinking about it. Just better to not work during the rut. -

Got with my manager tonight and took the 5th through the 13th off from work. Cant wait for the weekend. Now if the weather would stop warming up I'll be good. Oh yeah, took the 19th through the 27th off to. And will finish off whats left the last week of muzzleloader to. -
Definately deer loaf, nothing particularly special about this one. Average size for a mature deer feeding on apples probably.

Something doesnt add up, At 15 yrds a high center hit should have got the top of the near lung lobe and through the middle of the far lung resulting in a dead deer and complete pass through, even if he was 25 ft up in a tree. If he did manage to make it under the back bone without hitting the lungs he more than likely would have hit the Aortic Artery under the spine or even hit the spine, resulting in arterial spray or a dropped on the spot deer. My theory is he either hit farther back or farther forward than he thinks, If he shot just over the spine through the hide and meat, I have a hard time beleiving it wouldnt have passed all the way through. If he hit infront of the scapula high he would have missed both lungs and hit the dreaded black hole and could have stopped his arrow. I have hit a buck there before when I 1st started bow hunting and the arrow did not pass through and I found very little blood and never found the deer. If he hit high to far back he should get a complete pass through also. I think it was a high forward hit, and deer is sore but still alive.

11/1 Went out for 3hrs tonight, No deer. Saw about 20 turkey though with 6 of them within 20 yrds of my stand. 4 big toms stayed up ontop of the hill and wouldnt get anycloser. On my way to work tonight I saw a shooter 1/2 mile down the road from my house. If I had to guess I would say high 120's low 130's. Really nice 8 with long tines and good mass. -
deer were shot by hal blood a tracker in Maine and canada. Not sure if they were gutted. I would assume since he tracks them down in the wilderness and shoots them. Then has to drag them out. I know the 260 one was gutted and took 8 hours to get out to a state check in station.
-
good job with sticking with finding it. I have 4 dachshounds and they love to track me. I go outside and hide and then my wife lets them out and they run right to me. I should start them on deer tracking to.
-
I dont know, these deer below weighed 280 and 260. Still a really nice deer.
-
Thats a big daddy buck for sure. Look at his gut hanging down from laying around on the couch all summer eating that sweet corn in the farmers field . What a hog.
-
Try fertilizing one or two them with tree fertilizer stakes out at the water line and see if that helps.

10/31 Stupid Halloween -
Same where I hunt to, Some of the areas I hunt I dont even bother going into the woods untill the rut because there is no food there that is easy to hunt. I could sit there for weeks and not see a deer. Then bam the rut kicks in and bucks are criss crossing the woods all day long checking the fields on the propeties on either side of me for hot doe.
-
I find that not looking at the deer and looking at there feet helps alot once I have decided it a shooter. I draw on the leg and move up to where I want to hit. As long as I guess the yrdg right and follow through on the shot my kills increase. I taught this to my Dad who regularly use to fall apart while shooting doe even. And he started picking off a few more deer, though he has sudden cases of replapse sometimes. I rattled in a buck for him one time and it came barreling in. He couldnt even pull back his 60 lbs bow he lost it so bad.

Probably splattered on the highway

Wait for it, wait for it. Cold weather is here. I havent really seen any buck movement either till the snow hit this weekend. Now there all over the place. I have a feeling your luck will change.
