  1. Not sure what statelands you are refering to but from what I can tell as long as you have under 10 people with you and stay less than three days you can camp at statelands anytime without a permit. http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/7872.html §190.4 Camping permits a. Temporary camping in one location for four nights or more is prohibited except under permit. Except during the big game hunting season, no temporary camping permit will be issued to any person for a period in excess of 14 consecutive nights. No temporary camping permit may be renewed, or a new permit issued, to the same person for the same location in the same calendar year. b. Temporary camping is restricted in certain posted areas and no person may camp on such areas without a permit. c. Upon termination of camping all equipment and supplies must be removed from State land. The storage of personal property on State lands is prohibited. d. No temporary camping permits will be issued to individuals under 18 years of age. e. No group of 10 or more individuals may camp on State lands at any time except under permit
  2. If you read the bill you might also notice that the legal implements that are allowed to use during the regular season is missing something else besides the crossbow. The compound bow. It list pistols, rifles, shotguns muzzleloaders and long bow. NO cross or compound. My camp is in cortland county and no compound during the regular season disturbs me a bit. I'm pretty sure they mean all bows when they refere to longbows. A better question would be are you allowed to use a 410 shotgun with slugs in rifle country? Legal implements says a shotgun has to be 20 guage or bigger. Because inquiring minds want to know, happy? Found this in todays paper No Cortland crossbows Starting this fall, big game hunters in Cortland County can use centerfire rifles -- for the first time in history. They can't, however, take advantage of the state's newest hunting implement, the crossbow. Hunters in Cortland, Wyoming and portions of Chautauqua counties (south of Route 20) were legislated into rifle country two weeks ago. That means that they join Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chemung, Chenango, Herkimer, Madison, Montgomery, Oneida, Oswego, Otsego, Schoharie, Schuyler, Steuben, Tioga, Yates and a portion of Broome, which allow deer and bear hunting with rifles. For whatever reason crossbows are not, however, permitted for use in Cortland County, Westchester County, portions of Monroe County and portions of Albany County during the regular big game season, though they are allowed in the rest of the Southern Zone.

    New bow

Moved back to 40 yrds today to do a little long range ( for me ) work and was quite happy with the groups. Somehow my kisser button came loose and got shot out across my yrd. Not sure how that is even possible as hard as I cranked down on that thing putting it on. So going to the store again tommarrow to buy my 3rd kisser for the yr. My last bows kisser was on there for 5 yrs and I never had a problem with it, go figure.
  4. My buddy called me up one time and said he had just hung up a monster buck and I needed to come and look at it. I turned the corner of his house and there was an absolute moose of a buck hanging there. Apperently someone had hit it just before he showed up and it was flopping around in the road. He was trying to cross the road from a residential area going to a highschool football field in the middle of town. He finished it off with a tire iron and a police officer driving by gave him a tag for it. Weighed in at 245 lbs on another buddies scales (pre-rut middle oct.) and the rack was a basic heavy eight point g-2's were 14 inch long and you could face the rack head on and put it around your waist without a tine touching you. Will have to get a pic of the rack and post if I see him again sometime. I wonder how many monsters meet there end this way every yr and no one knows about it.
  5. Think I'll have to agree with you on that one. I have only seen coyotes once where I hunt. I see Bear just about everytime I go out. Anyone know how they taste?
  6. There seems to be some controversy about whether or not coyote hunting effectivelly reduces the number of coyotes in a given area. I have read several articles about hunting operations who have found that yr round 365 days a yrs trapping program is the only way to effectively reduce the population, and they still lose several radio collared trophy bucks a yr. So if you see one in the woods by all means shoot it but it will not make a dent in the population. If you want to help deer the best time to put the pressure on the coyotes is in the spring during the fawning time. But with the increase of black bear and bobcats in most areas and now fisher also you probably still will not make much of a difference.

    New bow

switched over to my 75 grain muzzy broadheads today. Didn't even need to make any adjustments. Broadheads are hitting right where my fieldpoints are. I couldn't be happier with this bow.

  9. I live in Broome also and have had more than my fair share of run ins and sightings of bears during bow and gun season. Always during bow or in the first week of gun or always in a group. Had a sow and three cubs walk by me last yr. I think if a lone one gets close this yr it might have to get shot.
  10. I would put my money on him getting creamed by an 18 wheeler before he got poached. I think alot of big bucks that dissapear this happens to. One day they are there the next there in the land fill and no one knows where it went to. I would think it would be very difficult not to draw the attention of the authorities ( unless your one of those crossbow poachers ) with gun fire that close to people.
  11. OK, if you want me to answer the question directly. I would buy the land next to yours and raise hogs on it. How bout a chicken barn up wind of his land or would that just be to mean?
  12. there is no example anywhere in the US that deer management and AR's haven't worked where they have been applied properly, the question really is.. Can the NYDEC apply any of it properly? I think not! As you all know I am all for deer management with antler restrictions in some circumstances... I'm just not confident that New York State could pull off a proper program statewide that would be beneficial to all or most WMU's Can they enforce it would be a better question. All they have to say is it is so and it is. So implementing antler restrictions isn't a problem. The NYSDEC couldn't enforce themselves out of a box without the help of other sportsman. For the entire Broome county area there are three officers. And in 25 yrs of hunting I have only been checked 3 times and they were all in 2009 when hunting stateland. Unless a neighbor turns in there neighbor for shooting something under the limit, people will probably continue to kill spikes and four points anyhow.
  13. Work on thinning the anti hunting herd I'm sure if they made hunting illegal then they would make fishing illegal also. So I would have to become an outlaw and poach and sell the meat since there would be a lot of deer around and no hunters. I have never really had much respect for authority anyhow so f'm.
  14. Went up for the weekend, Friday, Sat. and came home sunday. Got our limit in walleye ( plus throw backs ) all three days. Along with a ton of sheepshead, smallmouth and white bass. Silver and blue walleye divers seemed to work the best with flourescent colors taking over in the evening. I wont devulge where we were fishing other than on the lake in 8-15 ft of water seemed to be the ticket. Most fish were in the 15-20 inch range but we did get a couple over 20. Good luck.
  15. Good deer, I had one bigger than that in my back yrd the other day. Oh wait no I didn't
  16. Intersting article on orange and hunting accidents. http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/00044112.htm
  17. I wish the hawks would do a number on those flea bag gray squirrels that keep doing a number on my bird feeders. There like rats around here in 7s. I have never seen more rabbits than I have seen in the last 5 yrs. I hit atleast one of the stupid sh--s a week with my car. To bad I don't rabbit hunt anymore. Grouse pops have exploded over the last few yrs also. As far as the birds of prey go, I see redtails and coopers all over the place so I don't think they are to blame. More than likely your habitat is not what they want. You need nut bearing trees for the squirrel, brush lots for the rabbits, and thick woods for the grouse. If you only have one habitat say old growth forest then you might have some squirrels but won't support much else. And if your in the Adirondacks forget it, Forever wild killed anychance of a wild life bonanza for you, Pray for a forest fire to burn all the trees.
  18. I'm pretty sure its legal to bait Coyotes in NY.
  19. I was hunting in Alabama back about 10 yrs ago and was hunting with my bosses family for 1st day of rifle season. I was about 300 yrds from one of the family members along the edge of a swamp in a stand. It was about lunch time and time for the traditional family lunch spread. So I got out of my stand and heard a shot from the closest family member. I radiod him and he said he had just shot a huge pig. So I wondered over to give him a hand. He was in a section of the swamp that was thick with pallmetos and had just stepped off the last rung of his ladder stand and something came running right up to him through the brush. Well it scared the living crap out of him so he pointed his 06 at it and it stopped about 2 feet from the end of his barrell. It was a huge hog which he promptly popped in the top of the head. He nearly wet his pants he was still shaking when I got there. Ive shot several pigs in the 150 to 300 lbs range from lousiana to Alabama the Sows are worth the effort but if you shoot a Boar let it lay for coyote bait. It taste's like hell.
  20. Oh crap here it is again Sorry I couldn't help myself since no one mentioned Baiting.
  21. imagine how popular it would be if we discussed shooting spikes with a crossbow....not wearing orange....and being 12 years old Over bait!!
  22. http://www.pressconnects.com/article/20110802/NEWS01/108020378/Wild-pigs-proliferating-across-central-New-York?odyssey=tab|topnews|text|FRONTPAGE
  23. mine sure has. I have a custom barrel for my encore as well as a model 99. But now my goto deer cartridge is the 06. but 25 not 30. I he a remington 742 in 30-06. I was shooting remington coreloct 125 grainers. I shot a doe once, it hit her in the ribs and the velocity spun her round and the bullet exited and came back at me. I was gald I had orange on or I would have shot myself. To funny!!! My Remington 750 carbine 30/06 really spits the 150's out nicely. Would like to try some 125's for the heck of it sometime and see how they group.
