Cant really see it in this pic....maybe you can lol

not a full mount, just a fan and beard. he was a heavy bird pushing 25# but only had a 1" spur and the other was completely wore down. yes from a treestand haha. i had no idea that wasnt the common practice. funny thing is he walked in front of my old man at 50 yards but wouldnt even look towards his dekes. its like he heard some sweet soft calling from a newbie and just had to investigate. in all honesty he gobbled three times then i heard nothing. about 10 minutes later i kept hearing something like a snake going thru the grass and this strange ticking noise. obviously later on i found out it was his spitting and drumming. shot em at 20 yards when he decided to join my flock of 4 decoys. ill grab a pic tonite of the beard if i remember!

Thanks! It was my first year turkey hunting. Grabbed the old 20 gauge single shot, some sceery inflatable dekes and a push/pull call. Had no real idea what i was doing or how to setup or anything. Actually sat in my best deer treestand when he came in lol!

My best bird to date was a double beard. He was actually the very first turkey i ever shot. about 8 years ago.Real thick beard and one was 10 ", the other 9 3/4. Still got him mounted on the wall!

congrats!

nice bird! congrats!

Ive heard some are good out to 200 with good optics and proper slugs.
-
Wish everyone thought along the same lines as you. Ive seen too many horror stories with guys with slug guns around here that it makes me cringe to think they would now be able to use a rifle...again just my opinion. And even if it does pass here...ill still take the 870. Cant shoot past 100 yards in most of my spots. And for that im still an advocate for a shotgun being the most useful and effective inside 100 yards.

Congrats!

It would be awesome to say the least!

Meh...got enough yahoos shooting houses in wayne county with a shotgun. Imagine a 300 mag. Ill stick with my muzzleloader or 870.

plan on taking my 9 year old son out with me on sunday. he has always wanted to be with me when i shot a turkey. weve tried for a few years and weve never been able to connect with a bird. think my best option is to setup around 830 or 9 in the same general area i shot my bird on thursday. he did come in with 2 other longbeards so im hoping they made it thru the weekend!

i hope the woods start making noise. i might get out one morning this week before work but...fishing tournament saturday rules that day out. sunday i think im gonna take my 9year old son out with me. he has always wanted to be there when i got one and weve tried for years with no luck. maybe this time will be lucky day! gonna set up near the same spot i shot my bird on thursday.

congrats on the double!

thats what i did last week. no action wednesday, but thursday i connected at 1130. i like hunting during the week when i can. normally means i have the woods to myself!

Thinking along the same lines. Soft purring and low tone calling on a slate. This is also where ive had good luck with a push pull call for light calling
-
If possible slowly get up an walk away calling. Makes em think the hen is going the other way. Its worked for me in the past. Either that or switch to soft calling or get quiet altogether. Both have worked for me as well.

Ive always wanted to travel out of state to try turkey hunting in other states. Anybody have an opinion on which states to try? Thinking i may set up a couple trips for next spring. Ohio, pennsylvania seem close enough but what about other states around ny? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

What is going on with todays turkey hunters?
TeeBugg replied to noodle one's topic in Turkey Hunting
Anything over 30 is just ridiculous in my opinion. 50/60/70 yards why? Patience patience patience. Of the shots ive heard they were singles. Never heard more than 2 shots at a time. Ill admit i agree with sits....and my first one i shot and he flopped and thought i had to shoot again. Beginners mistake. Could be hunters shooting thru too thick of brush....also known as pokin and hopin!
