They just started showing up in this area of the state as well over the past few years. I thought for sure that black bear were going to be the next critter to call this region home in any countable numbers, but the fishers seem to be getting more established in a shorter time, while the bears continue to just occasionally pass through. Just another indicator of how the forest and it's residents are constantly changing, and Mother Nature always finds a way to keep things balanced by introducing different creatures where they will serve an important role that we may not even be aware of yet. I'm actually excited to see them finally show up, and looking forward to some encounters and learning more from/about them. All just my personal opinion of course. They could turn out to be the biggest PITA of an animal we never hoped to see here, but until then, I find them fascinating!

Thanks guys! I usually have an idea in my head of what I want it to look like, but once I start to draw it on there it needs to altered for fit and balance... so I guess I'm just winging it. Sometimes the end product doesn't even come close to what I had planned. I probably sand away more material removing my pencil marks than I do actually carving! I really can't draw for squat!

Haha- that's awesome man! I'll bet that looks pretty cool all lit up at night!

I know some of you guys like to see these things, and I always get a sense of relief and accomplishment when I finally finish a project like this up. I just finished this one for a friend who had me do some work on a buck skull last fall as well. Her hubby brought this back from a west coast hunting trip years ago, and they've since gotten bored with it and asked me to dress it up a bit. This skull will be going home with her this weekend.

I was at one of the release sights in East Aurora NY taking pictures. I've since been contacted by the DEC..., CIA..., NFL.., and FBI in an attempt to purchase my images before they reach the public.

Thanks man, but these shots suck, lol Hopefully I'll find myself on the other side of the window here in another week or two where I don't have to wait for the critters to come to me and there's nothing between us. I'm not on my computer now either so I have no way of editing any of these pics lately. You have no idea how painful it is for me to post them like this, lol

Happy Birthday fellers! Have a good one! -
Check out the "Ultra-Pro X Cam" lineup. They even have some good looking trail cams. https://www.ultraprox.com/ I have NOT used one, but EVERYTHING I've seen and heard about them is excellent. Price is extremely affordable, comes with several mounts for different applications, and the video quality is top notch! I used to own a Spypoint action cam........JUNK!

I'd get 'em fixed. While I was at it, maybe I'd add a 6" drop tine on each side.., and maybe reconstruct some split brows... forked G-3's are always cool..., and probably go with a dozen or so kickers and stickers off the bases to add some mass and make actual scoring a bit more challenging for anyone that doubts the number I've stuck on him!. I'd definitely be keeping an eye out on ebay too for any albino capes that came up for auction as well. I can hear the neighbors bitchin' already....."where the hell does he kill all these awesome bucks, and how come I never even get a trail cam pic of any of them... he must be baiting them",lol

What's the coolest thing you found in the woods?

A few off the top of my head. An old "Western Flyer" tandom bicycle.(good restorable condition) Vintage metal "wildlife management area"/no trespassing sign Rare old glass bottles and insulators An old clay pickle crock wedged between two trees, lol A handful of geocaches Countless arrows and broadheads An solid old steel toy pistol.(before they made them look and feel like toys) Very real looking. Two weather balloon radiosondes in a two mile area. Backwoods pet cemeteries with headstones. A full 30 pack of Bud on an old 3 wheeled wooden wagon. Antlers and skulls(should have started my list with this the coolest IMO) I used to keep pictures of all my odd, old relic finds but they got lost to Photobucket. I know I'm forgetting a BUNCH! Hell, one time I got lost and walked right into a deer farm full of piebalds in the middle of the woods! -
You've never seen a deer with it's ears pinned back? That's all it looks like to me.

batteries for trail cams question
wooly replied to goosifer's topic in Trail Camera Reviews and Info
I've been running my cams off the 12v Stealth Cam battery packs. I've yet to run one completely dead winter or summer as the battery life always exceeds my expectations of how long they SHOULD last. The battery level indicator on my Browning cams simply reads the 12v as an "external battery" and doesn't give a remaining power level percentage so I usually bring them home for a fresh charge every 3-4 months regardless of how much action they've seen Packing out a few of those heavyweight batteries along with their respective cams in and out has been the biggest drawback to them I've got to complain about so far. -
Thanks guys! Rob- you could always make your own blade to match your handle. I made this one out of cow leg bone. It's not quite as effective as a good steel blade, but it makes a neat display piece and you wont have to worry about losing it in the woods. Eventually I'll probably carve the blade on this one. One of these days I'm gonna make a little bone folding pocket knife just for the hell of it as well.

Putting a little spin on the conventional antler burr relief carving. These are really simple and turn out pretty cool once they're all sanded and polished up! Just another idea for those that always asks... "what can you do with deer antlers?". And just a little something for Valen-tines Day!

Not to sound like a dick, but that little fawn might have been dying before the dog came along to do it a favor by finishing it off. It hasn't exactly been an easy winter for them so far, and I'm sure it's taking a toll on a number of them. Ultimately the dog will take the blame/credit for the kill, but I'd almost be willing to bet there was more going on there than just that.

One time I decided to take my G/F with me woodchuck hunting on my bro-in-laws family farm. We could see the chucks dotting the field from the road when we pulled in, so I wasted no time holding her hand once the car door shut. I made a quick run around the barn and down the tractor path where my skinny azz slipped through the fence and into the cow pasture. She was a bit of a curvey gal that couldn't quite keep up with my bunny like speed, so being the gentleman that I am, I rushed her along from the pasture as she chugged down the dirt road to the field edge. Keeping my eyes on the chucks, I turned around at the last second when she finally caught up and grabbed ahold of the electric fence with both hands to crawl through the strands! I thought I was gonna have to kick her in the ass to get her to let go as her body stood there trembling from how ever many volts of electricity were lighting her up! That was the ABSOLUTE funniest thing I've ever seen in my life! I was laughing so hard I was crying......, and she was crying just because I think she lost all control of her bodily functions and fluids, lol.

Don't listen to them Dan. You'll get over her in time. It might hurt a little at first, but it's time to move on. You can always go back visit when you get rained off the lake.
-
Yep- apparently she's lost her damn mind! Dress her up in a nice warm fuzzy hat and sweater and leave her on the front steps at the closest nursing home!

Few more shots through the window this morning. The herd is growing and there are now 12 of them passing through every day. Looks like all doe and fawns so far.
