I try to follow the game laws to the letter. In this situation I would take the shot. Take the shot and the ticket, if that's how it would go...

Nice. Yet to get one with the muzzy. Used yours in regular season? What make?

Understand completely. This year I hunted for ten days in a row, looking for that buck. Never crossed paths. I had shots on does maybe all ten days. Many were the same ones I have encountered all year, with trail cams or just seeing them around. I took a doe the last 15 minutes of my 10 day hunt. It is definitely different for me. As others have said, it is not different for them, and that is the way it should be I guess. A deer is a deer. If you are going to eat it what is the difference. But there is for me.

I think it would be hard to compete with soybeans and corn. I am in a non ag area, so the stuff is like candy to them.

Boat Tail Soft Point. Should do the job...Not really familiar with Hornady offerings. Federal 165 BTSP is a good choice in 30/06. I would imagine that they have a similar load in 308? Maybe 150 gr?

If you had to choose...

Ho phone? -
That's good, but a different one. This article used small dowels, like pencil size. If I remember correctly, it did bust some myths about big slow bullets like the 45/70.
-
I remember an old article from Guns & Ammo, or something similar that did an experiment with hunting rounds and wood dowels. That was interesting, but was before the internet.

I get cold out there, so I cheat. Bought a pair of Cabelas electric gloves. Toe warmers. And TWO layers of Under Armor. One tight fitting, one loose. Got tired of being cold in the stand, this year I was toasty. There is nothing like being out there in the bitter cold and being comfortable.

Drink water, fill with pee, problem solved.

Binos indeed. Absolutely lost without binos, any type of hunting. Usually I take 10 steps and look around 5 minutes. There have been times, when I have moved 10 steps in 30 minutes, like if I almost know deer are in a certain area. Last deer I shot was maybe 25 yards, walking right past me while still hunting.

Walking is a lot different than sitting in a stand, obviously. If cold feet are an issue, this is what I do. Boots with 1000 gr thinsalate. Antiperspirant on feet. If your feet get a little sweaty walking to your stand, cold feet is the result. Boots should fit pretty loose to let air circulate. wear a wicker sock, and a medium weight wool sock. Add a grabbers toe warmer in there. Mine are Irish Setters, had them for 15 years.

Hunted ten straight days, saw one spike. Cousin saw two crotch horns sparring. A lot more does and fawns though. Could be because of the past two mild winters? Still have lots of apples, but they are frozen solid. After watching the does all ten days, I took one in the last 15 minutes of my hunt.

.40 Just in case.

The smallest acreage you would buy to hunt deer?
Ford replied to New York Hillbilly's topic in Deer Hunting
That is definitely a consideration. Luckily I can shoot anywhere I want. And so can my neighbors. (good neighbors), That is something that you can not count on. -
What's a whitetails brain, inch and a half? No thanks. Had a buddies friend who had a buck run on to a frozen lake after being shot. Well, the ice broke, and the buck went into the drink. I will forgo the details, except to say those headshots aint pretty. He was a good shot but....

Cigar works good Where I hunt (between two hills) when there is wind, it comes from varying directions so not much I can do.

The smallest acreage you would buy to hunt deer?

So I guess you mean on the land itself, not counting state land it might border? If that is the case I would say 20 acres for me, if it was the right spot. (as others have mentioned) I have a small acreage camp, 28 acres. Borders state land though. But I rarely hunt the state land. I know of a guy not far from me that has 3/4 of an acre, but he is smack dab in the middle of a state forest, with no neighbors. And that area is not hit very hard by hunters, I think he does well. -
Yeah, but they are mostly very recent, and with guys with one post. Interesting.

They are LEO's. (...Sigh)

Very nice!

Yeah rye as well. Just talking about the rye I planted in another thread. I just had the ditch by my driveway dug out. I spread some leftover rye I had from the food plot I planted on the dirt, (not really soil) and it came up like crazy.
-
Besides the deer eating winter rye late in to the winter, it is great for the soil, loosens it and fixes nitrogen. And easy to plant/grow! The deer in my area are about 2 maybe 3 miles from any kind of agriculture. Woods deer, lol. They attack anything grown, better than eating sticks I guess. Actually there are tons of apple trees on my property and the surrounding area. But that's a short term food source. (besides them browsing the trees) Just goes to show you though they love variety.
