The biggest reason I am planning on holding off until next year is that I have not shot a bow in 14-15 years and have never shot seriously. I really don't know how prepared I would be this year and unless i pick up a bow and it feels like second nature to me I wouldn't feel comfortable using it to hunt with. I feel any animal I hunt deserves enough respect from me that I should at least be able to shoot consistently/ accurately. And yes doewhacker I am a lefty but I would not be able to accept a Bow for nothing.

Thank you for your replies. I had planned on practicing from different angles and positions and from my climber. If I don't feel I am ready by next fall i will put it off for another year. I have studied deer anatomy in the past and am very selective with my shots with a gun and let deer walk if i am not comfortable with the shot i will do the same with a bow. I remember being told in the past by my uncle that he waits 4 hours before he starts tracking but i learned with my first deer to wait before you start tracking or you will just keep pushing it further and further away so 6 hours is fine with me, that same deer taught me to study deer anatomy more in depth also. As for getting fitted by a pro shop the big box stores are over an hour away and i have a pro shop 2 miles from my house. my fish and game club offers 3d shoot 1 thursday evening every month all summer long but I work thursday evenings so that will be kind of hard to make it to. Growalot I got it covered. my old harness was getting up there in age and I didn't like the one that came with my climber so I just invested in a HSS ultralite last week. I want to enjoy being in the woods for years to come not be paralyzed or dead. keep the suggestions coming.

Ok so I am thinking about signing up for a bow hunting safety course in a few weeks. I am 27 and finally giving in to the jealousy of all you other guys that are in the woods a couple weeks earlier than me. I figure if I take the safety course this september I will hopefully be ready to start bow hunting by next september. I have very little experience with archery. I had a cheap compound bow as a kid that I could hit a pizza box with at 10-15 yard and shot long bows at 4 ft targets at about 10 yard in middle school. other than practice practice practice anybody have any tips for me to prepare for next season?

I carry a buck trio daily. I tried a buck stockman but it was slightly to big for comfort to keep in my pocket everyday. the trio is slightly smaller and perfect size I don't even notice it is there most of the time. I had a old timer minuteman that I carried for years I loved that knife it was small but it seemed like I never had to sharpen it and it was always razor sharp.

I find with my trophy cam if i enhance the pics in iPHOTO it helps a little, more so with night pics but i tried it with yours and it didnt help much. if you zoom in any it distorts the photo and it becomes very blury.

My father used a .243 for years and got a lot of deer with it. When he quit hunting he gave it to me and I have shot a couple with it. I never had an exit hole but was lucky enough that I never had one take a step after hit. I upgraded to a 30-06 this year but would feel fully confident in taking the .243 out. as a matter of fact i still took the .243 out a few time this past season

my grandfather has a 94 in .45 colt it is the only gun he will hunt deer with. I have never shot it but it would probably end up sitting in the gun safe just like my 30-30 i prefer a gun with a little more effective range.

Hunting coyotes with a 22,,Anyone

I wouldn't use stingers in a marlin 795 the bolt buffer can't handle the hyper velocity rounds and you could break the buffer and possibly crack the receiver. my 795 seems to like a strict diet of cci mini mags hp and round nose. -
I've never had LI deer but upstate deer tastes pretty d@mn good!!!

something i just came across while trolling the internet

some of the "authorities" are funny when it comes to handguns. my wife's uncle got a dwi a few years ago and it was his first arrest ever he was not possessing any weapons at the time and they took his pistol permit . as far as I'm concerned oh well they are allowed to do that not much you can do. where it got funny is he was told by the judge he had so much time to turn all of his pistols into the local sheriff's department. he then asked the judge if he could give them to my father in law in a different county 6 hours away and the judge said absolutely not he had to turn the pistols in to be destroyed . well he had to go to court again because he felt it wasn't right that he couldn't give them to my father in law and the judge tied it up in court for months the only reason the judge wasn't successful was all of the pistols were already on both her uncles and my father in law's pistol permits so the judge could not stop him. That judge wanted those pistols destroyed he didn't care if it wasn't right. -
the 795 has a decent trigger but can be made better with a little jb weld or a set screw in the top of the trigger mechanism. There is a lot of good info on rimfirecentral.com there is a wealth of knowledge over there when it comes to marlin .22s and all .22s and some good info on appleseeds. I have a model 60,795,and a 25m. you might want to look in to the feed throat or a feed throat conversion kit for it. it is a common issue with older marlin semi autos they wear down over time.

I am not try to stick up for madonna at all but they were talking about it on the radio that she had suffered a hamstring injury during rehearsal for the halftime show. so considering that and her age i have to give her credit but i still think thier choices for the halftime shows the last few years sucked.

Anyone interested in silencers for rifles and shotguns?
noahmstone replied to Deerthug's topic in General Chit Chat
I would like one for small game hunting and target practice with my .22's but would find it pointless with with big game rifles because it wouldn't suppress the sound enough to be worth the cost of the ATF permit and the cost of a silencer. -
I have a daughter that will be 3 in april. She absolutely loves to be outdoors. When she was younger she would start to fuss and all I had to do was step outside with her and she would calm down. She would still rather be outside than in front of the tv and I hope it stays that way. She likes to see animals and absolutely loves to see trailcam pictures. I haven't figured out if she will hunt or just be a wildlife observer. Either way I am not going to complain as long as we can enjoy being outdoors together.

It's a beaver. I know a guy that traps that every couple of years he will trap a 70 lb. beaver. I remember the first time he showed me one I wouldn't have believe it if i hadn't seen.

my father is looking for a tractors. If you get the info I will see if he would be interested -
I started with a wildgame ir5d. the battery life is horrible, it works when it feels like it, and the trigger speed is very slow. I upgraded to a bushnell trophy cam 8mp this year and I absolutely love it. it has an excellent battery life trigger speed is right around 1 second. picture and video quality is good but I make it better with photo editing software that alows me to brighten up the dark areas so I find things I didn't see in the original pictures, and it always works.

I have been doing this with motionx gps on the iphone for the last 2 season. it is a pain. you can only upload 1 waypoint for each map. so you can't see everything together on 1 map. plus you have to pay for motionx gps. I have been waiting for the deer camp app for a while and it is supposed to be free. i am hoping that it will let you look at all you markers on one map. I also like the field and stream rut reporters app on iphone.
