8th Annual Banquet MARCH 14, 2020
moog5050 replied to Culvercreek hunt club's topic in Greater Rochester Southern Tier QDMA
We still have room in the hunting ny table: 1. Nomad 2. DDT 3. DDT's son 4. Red 5. Johnplav 6. Moog 7. Natalie PM me if you plan to attend. Couple of maybes were @TreeGuy and @LetEmGrow. Love to see you both join. -
For regular use hunting I think you are making the right decision
-
Pretty neat. Legal or not, I suspect mr law would show if you did any amount of fast firing with that in most areas of NY.

My 224 is 18. Shoots well. But yes I doubt I will be shooting it 1000yds which really is the intent. Long range shooting from an AR15 platform. that said, 90g fusion might just be good juju on deer.
-
Not enough to matter. Convenience of a shorter rifle vs ringing out all performance possible.
-
The 22 is likely to add some FPS. How critical is that vs the convenience of a shorter barrel and weight savings. I would likely go 18 but 224 is a legit long range chambering so if you plan to regularly shoot past 500yds the extra 4” may be worth it.
-
Weight difference?

That proof research barrel is awesome. Performs like a great bull barrel but being carbon fiber, the whole guns less optics is 5.5lbs. More accurate than I am. Like I said, I too would like to see what it does from a bench with a day optic.

I think ideas move from trad to compound. Rt makes sense for a rt handed recurve shooter since arrow is left of center at rest. But on a compound you shoot centershot mostly so I am not sure how much it could matter. But if it gives greater confidence it’s worth trying it.

Decided to stretch out the yote rig to 190yds (all I have) for fine tuning. Total of 3 clicks and it was perfect or at least as good as I can shoot. All shots shooting off tripod. Started slightly low and right but very pleased. No barrel cooling. Just aim and shoot. Last three in toe warmer: since I was out I also finished sighting the Valkyrie Started a bit high but after one adjustment I was on. Again, very happy at 190yds: Last was 458 socom. I forgot I swapped scopes so it took me 7 to get on the target but last 3 looked good at 110yds. Unfortunately as I was putting gun in truck I noticed scope moved 1/8” in rings. I guess I will be back out fine tuning her but I am optimistic she will be a fine deer gun inside 175 or so. She does kick some that’s for sure.

Even with no kills it was fun. I had fun anyways. I think they did too.

Took my cousin, his 13yr son and their friend on two sets. 6 dogs total. 3 never came in range. 3 misses with the young guy on gun. But lots of action and fun. He missed a fox twice and we switched to yote vocals. Had one yote come in hot 10 min later around 100yds. He couldn’t quite find him in scope. Next time.

First test tonight. Hope they are decent as I only did one base layer and then wind Fowler.

Even fluted?

You are making me want to build one not that I need another but looks fun.
-
From everything I read, you are assured an accurate barrel. Every thread I read about WOA raves about them. But I am sure criterion makes a solid barrel too. If price didn’t matter - carbon proof barrel!
-
WOA gets the best reviews I have seen universally for barrels under $400
-
Did you consider white oak armament? If you really plan on ringing out the 224 for long distance shooting I would go 22 otherwise 18 is more convenient. Mine is 18. edit WOA is on backorder. They are known to be about the best bang for the buck in AR barrels.
