  1. Where are you fishing near Rochester. West of the Genny has been hot from what I hear. Braddocks and oak orchard. East has been slower. If you are chartering, I am sure the captain will put you on fish.
  2. This afternoon: couple of largemouth and lots of panfish.
  3. My kids seem to fish about 2-3 times per week with or without me. Last night, they were both reorganizing tackle boxes and spooling line. They are hooked, my son on bass, my daughter on panfish. I grew up on lake o chasing salmon and trout and we still do but this year the weather and water levels have not cooperated.
  4. Prayers sent and will continue to pray for his speedy and full recovery!
  5. 6 more weeks of season is a huge bonus and a compound is not that difficult to learn. You can get proficient to 25yds within a month of reasonable practice. Plus it's easier to handle in the stand and WAY MORE FUN! And you can then be a qualified elitist. Lol
  6. That's a good call. My cabelas goose down hand muff is a must have when it gets cold. I don't use gloves in bow season.
  7. You can buy a variety of backpack rain covers in camo for cheap. I am not sure if any backpacks are waterproof though.

    Saratoga Lake

    Some beauties. Well done!
  9. It's water resistant but not waterproof. If you sit in an all day downpour (I won't) it will get wet inside. For your typical shower, stuff stays dry. You could spray the pack with camp dry if you need it more water resistant. Or put the inner belongings in a plastic bag I have no concern with electronics in it for the conditions I will hunt . Great pack though. Lots of room, outside pockets and dividers. Very quiet and comfortable. I have carried it in some thick areas for the last 4 years. Still looks new.
  10. Beyond bows, I would say that my badlands superday pack has been a great buy. Tough as nails with a lifetime warranty (that I doubt I will ever need). I use it more for working at the properties than hunting, but it comes out when I expect to do an all day sit too. Worth the money.
  11. More than I would like admit. Lol
  12. I use wraps because it's easier to find my arrows, sometimes.

    Saratoga Lake

    Good luck Grampy.
  14. I see them as more a target accessory. More weight, more bulk, not really needed for the range most people shoot deer. When I was more into compounds, I tried them. Looked kinda neat but I didn't see any huge improvement.
  15. In that case, eat up! All is good.
  16. Does she call you Hansel at all? I think I heard this story before.

How did he not get better penetration from that close.

Man, I would love to experience that. Dumb or not you know his heart was pounding out of his chest.

    That was awesome.
  20. Sorry Grow. I will agree to disagree. If you want to kill older bucks on a regular basis, it requires more skill than just making the shot. The rest is not all luck as you suggest. Of course not every plan results in a dead buck, but the goal of the plan is to put your self in the highest percentage under the given conditions and knowing how to do that takes some hunting skills. Implement a well reasoned plan enough times in a season and your chances are much better than sitting anywhere hoping. It would be easy to sit the same stand and hope for luck, but I really don't think I would kill many 3 plus year old bucks doing that. I guess your mileage may vary and, if so, good luck this year. I could also just drop lines anywhere in lake Ontario with any lure and hope to catch a nice salmon and I just may get lucky on occasion. But those that catch them regularly have the skill to do so by constantly analyzing how to put the odds in their favor and aren't fishing anywhere with any lure and just hoping.
  21. Really - putting yourself in the right position at the right time is a critical part of strategic hunting IMO. Sure one can get lucky, but to do it season after season requires some skill or woodsmanship as Rob suggests. I know we have some stands that are really doe stands and others where we wait until the right time and circumstances to try to knock down an older buck. Different places, timing and other factors all come into play. Obviously sealing the deal with good shot placement is a final step.
