I will look for it, but DEC just released the numbers they believe and its well bellow 800. Brainworm is a worm that comes from whitetail deer and only really effects moose. The moose come in contact with it when they come in contact with whitetail scat. I would love to see moose rebound nicely and allow us to have a moose season. Ill be the first one to apply if that day ever comes

We might have an easier time with elk unfortunately. Moose arent doing well in the Northeast at all. Combination of warmer weather and brain worm seem to be giving moose a huge problem now.

Not sure why NY doesn't require it, but you only risk your life even more if you don't wear it. I only hunt private land and you'll never see me with out blaze orange during gun season now. It only takes one trespasser.

Not my style of mount

.223 for deer how far would you shoot a deer with one ?
ATbuckhunter replied to Hunter007's topic in Deer Hunting
Here's the way I think about it, if your trying to dig a big hole and you have the choice of a shovel or a backhoe, you'd probably choose the backhoe. The shovel will get the job done, just not as easily. There may be better choices than the .223, but if your very selective with shots and have the right set up you'll be fine Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
Pretty much anything hunting and fishing and anything about my heritage and the area my family comes from.

Experiences grafting fruit trees?
ATbuckhunter replied to stubborn1VT's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
I personally don't, but I heard some people use a tar like substance. Tape is probably your best bet though. Try to support the branch if you have to, You don't want any weight to stress the graft. -

One thing I forgot to say is you'll want to cover your graft with something to keep out the moister and bacteria from the graft. I use black electrical tape, but some people use sterile medical adhesive tape if they can get they're hands on them. The electrical tape will have to be replaced after a month or two. -
If you have a hitch on your car, then I would get one of those racks you attach onto the hitch. I personally don't have that on either car i take hunting, so I always skin the deer and leave the hide in the woods. Ive only ever brought home a deer with its hide once and I doubt ill be doing that anytime soon. Ticks are the only thing im scared of in the woods.

Make sure you have a very clean and very sharp knife to make all the grafting cuts. There are a few different ways to make these cuts, so research which one you think will help you out for what your doing. You should still be okay to collect scion wood, but not for too much longer with this warm weather were predicted to have. -

ATbuckhunter replied to Hunter007's topic in Deer Hunting
I would limit it to about 100 yards (which is no issue in NY) and make sure I have the very best bullets. This is somewhere the Barnes full copper line up really shines above the rest. You'll need that weight retention of the full copper bullets. -
Who do you share your meat with?
ATbuckhunter replied to Robhuntandfish's topic in Game Recipes / Cooking
They didn't know how to cook venison properly. We all know that venison can be very tough when not cooked the right way or using cuts of meat for the wrong dishes -
whats your favorite wild game?
ATbuckhunter replied to Robhuntandfish's topic in Game Recipes / Cooking
Red meat- I've only ever had whitetail so that'll have to be favorite for now Birds- Turkey is my favorite, but I do really like duck and goose Freshwater Fish- Steelhead Saltwater Fish - Pompano, Triple tail and blackfish -
Who do you share your meat with?
ATbuckhunter replied to Robhuntandfish's topic in Game Recipes / Cooking
I share with some family and some friends here and there. I don't usually give too much away because when we have venison we typically only eat that if we're going to eat red meat. I used to give half of the deer away to people, but they didnt know how to prepare the meat so they don't ask for it anymore. I certainly don't mind because I prefer to eat venison than beef. A lot of people who don't hunt don't typically understand how much goes into it so they don't really appreciate the meat a lot of the time. -

The battle,over gun rights

I really feel that social media has really negatively impacted a lot of society. Especially for the weaker minded individuals. -
The battle,over gun rights
ATbuckhunter replied to Nomad's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
Many countries do have the means for it. Go to the Balkans, and ill pay you for each house you find with out some kind of AKM or other fully automatic machine gun. No mass killings over there, even though everyone has these guns illegally. So to me that obviously means its something other than guns causing the problem. -
2's are the minimum you want to use. But since its early season I think you'll be perfectly fine. Aim for the head and be ready for a finishing shot if its not dead when it hits the ground.

I think this is more of a subjective thing. What's important to some hunters may not be important to others. While we don't have the numbers of quality bucks in NY that they have in IA or the Midwest, but they don't have the different habitats that we have. I also think we have more potential because from what I am seeing for many parts of the state is better quality of bucks each season. A lot of the Midwest is already at the top of their potential and slipping in some cases. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Ill actually go ahead and give NY a big 10. With the price of one tag, you can hunt a number of different habitats from the pine barrens of long Island to the wild north of the Adirondacks. All having their own way of hunting that can be completely different than what your used to with in a 5 hour drive of anywhere in the state. Not too many states you can say they have that. Healthy bag limits and the quality of bucks has been increasing from year to year. Fun fact, LI actually rivals some of the best whitetail areas if you look at the B&C entries. Its harder to hunt, but the quality of bucks are there for sure. I say with in 10 years we'll have a very good quality buck hunting in many parts of NY, in fact we have quite a few now. The biggest problem we have is we don't have more than 2 big game species yet.

You can bowhunt on more public lands than you can gun hunt
-
Check out some of the electronic hearing protections for shooting. A lot of them actually enhance hearing as well as protect while shooting. A cheaper version of hearing aid's while hunting.
