  1. Welcome! Im the opposite to you, ive been deer hunting all my life but ive just gotten into duck hunting. Good luck this January and be careful out there. A lot of yahoo's on the island. If you want to get into bowhunting, I highly suggest you take a look at the club I belong to in Suffolk County. Its called Suffolk Archers
  2. Heard about hunters launching from there. I'm hoping to get a kayak next year so I can have access to more places. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  3. Im on the boarder of NYC and Queens actually. Not quite Long Island, but Its easier for me to go to the Island than upstate. I was also thinking of joining some local clubs, but the couple i reached out to didn't respond . Ill be sure to look into DU.
  4. Unfortunately I'm a college student, so money is a little short now as I had to pay tuition for this semester. Don't think I could afford an outfitter, but ill check him out.
  5. Anyone in LI willing to have another hunter tag along with them? Id love to learn from an experienced hunter down here in LI. I Just recently got into waterfowl hunting and obviously don't know what I'm doing. I just bought a couple calls and a dozen mallard decoys, but with no boat or kayak i'm very limited where I can hunt. I'm willing to help out in anyway and adhere to any rules you may have.
  6. Very sad day indeed. He was by far my favorite deer and deer hunting writer. I always wanted to meet him, especially since he was from NY. Its hard to describe how much ive learned about deer because of him
  7. Last day in Florida and I was on fire. Should have been fishing this spot the whole time instead of trying to find new places. Can't wait to come back for spring pompano Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  8. Maybe next time then. Something makes me feel bad for them though. The one great thing about them, is they fight very hard and take some really nice runs Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  9. Throw back for me. I hear they're good to eat, but it looks like a beotch to clean. Plenty of other good fish to catch down here so why bother Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  10. Haha that one gave me a good laugh! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  11. Down in my family's condo in Florida for a bit. I did some fishing yesterday and caught 2 of these guys. Hooked 2 nice speckled trout, but I made some rookie mistakes and lost them at shore. Today is another day to chase these trout. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  12. The ribs are actually pretty good. I've eaten them before and would do it again, but I would need to have a big enough deer to do it. There isn't much meat on em so if the deer isn't big enough, I feel it's not worth the trouble. I think you'll enjoy it. As for me I don't keep the flank steak. I salvage almost every part of meat of a deer except the flank and usually don't keep the ribs anymore. I highly suggest you guys keep the calves though. I personally would rate them on par with the most prime cuts of the deer when slow cooked for 2 hours. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  13. Cant complain really. Got a real nice 3+ year old turkey this spring about 40 min into my the first hunt, then I got 4 deer this year. Only complaint I have is I couldn't put down one of the 3 nice bucks I was chasing (all were shot by hunters). This was a year of firsts for me though. Got my first duck, caught many new species of fish I'e always wanted to catch, saw my first coyote in the woods, tied my own fishing lures and actually caught fish with them...etc. Im excited to see what goals i can accomplish for the 2018-2019 season.
  14. I can see where you'd say that. The wood is kept in a separate shack so it's very clean, and the wheelbarrow and sled is used to transport wood back and forth. In fact we don't even have the fire on dirt, we put down a large piece of iron to separate it from the ground. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  15. If your ever in NYC, let me know and I'll give you a piece to try. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  16. Id take a 45 min drive in a heart beat. Right now my closest spot is an hour and 15 if i'm driving fast.
  17. I was not, but my family has been smoking like this for as long as I can remember as well as the landowners family doing it back in Spain. I did check on it frequently, but since the windows are always closed the fire really settles down after a few min.
  18. Its actually the landowners smoke shack. Hes been smoking meat in that shack for the last 5 or 6 years so I know its safe. We never put more than 3 or 4 logs at a time so the flame doesn't get any higher than that.
  19. Forgot to show a pic of what I've been doing the last few days. I smoked some of the deer that I shot this year. Came out pretty good this year. I'll have to shorten the amount of time it stays in the salt though. Here is also a pic of my first duck. It's a black duck for sure. Ended up getting two mergansers and 2 geese on my way out. 20. I had a feeling it wouldn't be good. Thanks for letting me know
  21. How close to your dog are you shooting the .22? Maybe try to reward her when she doesn't freak out when you shoot? Not sure if that would be a good idea. Looks like salmon run has a ton of experience in this area, so id listen to him.
