I've killed a couple young bucks after seeing them out in fields and using the can. heads went right up and they showed up right at my tree. I don't blind call and frankly don't think I know enough about them. Often the best thing I can do is leave them home .

How long do you leave your powder and bullet in the gun
Nomad replied to mark3885's topic in Muzzleloaders
I always snap a cap or 2 -
Who else is glad they didnt take anything last weekend?
Nomad replied to Deerthug's topic in Bow Hunting
One thing I do that extends it a little is my game freezer gets pack full. Fill all the space up with water filled jugs. As the meat is eaten its replaced with more jugs. Won't get you 4 days but its a start, the power co. up here is giving out dry ice as well. Power outages here tend to be spotty. I once lost it for 11 days, the people next door never lost it ! I figure I can always find a friend with power, although I should get a back up system. -
How long do you leave your powder and bullet in the gun

" I have used used balloons , duct tape, electrical tape, and condoms..All work the same. Duct tape is perhaps the most rugged "" Hum not sure the Mrs. would go for the duct tape... I shoot a MK 85, change out the powder for each hunt. I used to leave it in the garage, drive home with the heat off and so on, till one time when I changed out the powder and out came a damp slug of "powder" . -
The longer I live 53 years so far, the more people I meet the more hunters I talk to the more I realize this type of stuff happens a lot. killing them in bow with guns, at night, out of season and on and on. Crack has nothing on antlers. The Rochester D and C newspaper runs stories on hunters each year, I've known or knew guys who've known a few of them. Two of these news stories were false and one of the guys was well known to LE as a slob hunter at best... Yet here he is in the paper with his story of how good a "hunter" he is. "Big" hunter buys land near mine, wall of heads only interested in big bucks, we can make this area better qdm ect. Dusk 2nd last day of bow ,deer pouring into fields, bang ! a single gun shot from his place right around his blind. 2 days later gun season starts ,he tells me he got that big one out of that blind opening day moring, funny I was over there and did not hear any shots..... Yes i should have called the DEC when I heard the shot in bow or at least went over . Same guy I've found in his stand well after dark, wearing dark cover alls . I had a long walk out over 1/2 hour and was walking with a headlamp, he was on stand by a field a short walk from his home . He's got a wall of heads though. I have found head less bucks on my spot, gun shot in bow . Had the DEC over (they were great btw)

Sat last night in TV field, strong wind, funny not much at home. Another zero deer outing, thats it for this stand for the most part, they'er just not crossing it, or feeding in it like other years. Not hunting today too much to do at home, out of town till Sunday night. Then I got 7 days still off to hit it hard. Weird year, best year for bucks on cam, saw 5 "shooters' at distance, but lowest deer sightings in this spot in 24 years of bow hunting it

I hope to knock one large buck out of that ratio in a couple hours.... if the timing is right I may take a doe. Finally made a good dent in the left over meat.
-
I hunt 8h. Today 8 deer 3 running around, did not get a good look at. 2 Bucks out 10 ;00 -11 00 ,one big 8 making scrapes. Nothing crazy but a good sign. I'm off till nov 11th I think ? I'll hit it hard around the 5th or so .

This AM was very good. 8 deer, one VERY nice 8pt walking making scrapes in the open woods at 11:00.Hope to make it out some next 2 days depends on weather .

Muddy Treestands
Nomad replied to WNYBuckHunter's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
Silly me I though this was going to be mud from boots falling down from stands...... Something I have not had to deal with this year, but most years all my stands are muddy ! -
Ya I work for a 450 man FD,its all you hear at work from Aug to Christmas there are so many hunters . Opening day of gun is one of the most sought after tricks off, right after Christmas and 4th of july . The joke is your man asking " can you come in a little early tomorrow"? "sure what time ? " ah...4:30 AM ? I don't know how he ended up upside down either, did not read it first time.

Ya I'm kidding to I hunt farm land....... I always have corn near me, saw 8 deer today one very nice 8pt -
Last night I sat from 3:30 till dark, new stand location. NOTHING ! Slowest bow season for me in 24 years. Yes its early, yes its been hot,yep lots of corn up. Had all that before. Just a slow year. Well what a differance a day makes.Went out this AM 44 degrees no wind to speak off, went to TV field, had 3 doe come out at 7:30 to far no plan to shoot does in bow this year, but with it so slow who knows. 9:30 got down, drove over to my main spot. walking in along the woods in a green field as I walk up the slope just pop head over crest nothing few more steps there is a deer in field, a buck small though. he's 150 yards feeding I drop to my knees as there is ZERO cover. He keeps coming right at me till 50 yards ! I he stops looks awhile and turns runs a bit stops again. Get in another new stand in open hardwoods, 10;30 3 deer running around, one doe rest not clear. 11:00 single deer moving through 80-90 yards off, pick up binos. NICE 8pt outside ears solid 10 inch G's, as luck would have it turns out he was 20 yards form the ladder I thought of being in. When I left walked over, some nice fresh scrapes there as well. 8 deer 2 bucks one nice buck. Most between 9:30 and 11:00. I feel much better like ite really bow season for the first time this year.

Nomad replied to arrow nocker's topic in General Chit Chat
Ya to the north of my woods is a corn field about 2,000 feet x 2,000 feet. to the west of me is corn maybe 300 feet x 1,000 . -
She's tricking me ! Some wind last night no power for a couple hours, but with my battery TV the wife still got to watch Dancing with the Stars... Have not been able to hunt in a week and thought this week would be a wash, got up today at 8:00, sun breaking through and not to windy , I could have hunted the AM ,I'll be out this afternoon! My best to those who did not fair as well .
-
Good luck. myself fixed 2 blade Mangus cut on contact, shoots same as a field points, as all broadheads should, no moving parts, o rings ect., deer hardly feel them most run a few steps, stop, then fall over in a bit . Pull it out of the dirt wash it off,run it over a stone, strop, kill the next one.

Walking distance shooter ? Know where Vinyard rd meets Lake rd about one mile from outlet ? Its named Vinyard because in the early 1,900's my grandfather had his vinyard there. I grew up there, my family ahd roots there to close to 100 years. But that part of lake rd is 50 feet above the lake.

I carried folks down ladders over my shoulder while I wore 60 pounds of gear, you do what you have too,but thats with smoke and flames coming out the windows.. But in this case I'd think he'd be tied off from above and lowered. You could try 2 ladders at 90 degrees to each othe and 2 guys to carry him, but thats far from ideal. A flat rung against a tree and all. Depends if a guy is in good conditon you'll take your time and do it with upmost safety,if he's in bad shape and needs advanced care you'll you might just climb one ladder and carry him. I have a ladder at home with a top rung made for poles and trees, never seen one on the job though. If using screw in steps its not a bad idea to have a few near the top of the non climbing side....

wow hope you gat another chance at him ! I have not been able to hunt in in days, and it looks like next Sunday PM or monday will be next time unless we catch a break in storm thur or fri.

Got my gutters cleaned, flashing covered w/roof cement (they never put it in correct )and last nor'easter I had an indoor waterfall on the brick fireplace. Outdoor furniture secured, pool cover drained ect. Always have supllies on hand.. Been up to Buffalo twice now in 24 hours, 2 daughters in college there, crashed computor with lost accounting project, and other stressed out high achiever girls issues. Brought up my lap top till other comp. gets new hard drive, and found missing purse w/ Iphone for the other . Put air in their low tires and filled there empty tanks as well. I could use a storm 2 girls in their 20's is major stress the break would be nice..... ,as long as everyone stays safe. Many convoy's of tree workers and electrical workers heading east on the Thurway since yesterday.

Lets see finish up " days" tomorrow, my Capt. asked me to work for him Sunday night (which means no hunitng sunday afternoon or monday AM), then its days of heavy wind and rain, followed by an out of town wedding..... That pretty much takes care of my first week off.

Well my back yard has a pile of deer skulls, sitting on a old 4 trunked stump. I like to pick them up in the woods bring 'em home for the skull tree. Sometimes I hang a shed or skull near my stands to see if friends notice them while sitting in the stands .
