  1. Hum, I guess i'd say my BPS Buck Special, as its been my first and only deer gun . Killed many many with it over the years, if the deer ever stop falling over I may think about a new gun . But then I'd never sell my Dad's Remington mod. 11 which is what I started to hunt with on days he was not going out. And that goes for my Grandfathers Remington side by side too.
  2. Hum I was going to call it a season as well.Raining pretty good here, my hunting land is a bit south of me I'd have to leave here soon to be on stand by 3;30, have a Christmas dinner to be at by 6:30 as well. I think I'll just clean up my gun/hunting room, and wait for the oldest to return home from college, her sister got here yesterday, she's still in bed......
  3. I'm going there now for some gift cards, but I don't buy much gun/hunting gear from them anyway. Socks, underwear ya sure. But they don't carry the top quality gear I like in the first place I'd be surprized if you could find many places with those guns on the shelfs now. They are the most popular rifle and the run on guns shops this past week has been record breaking. A guy on my crew went to the county clerk last Fri. to add his new Glock, the place was packed, people in deep lines picking up permit app.s Beikirchs where he went to pick up his new gun had about 100 people there, first time woman buyers 5 deep, guys buying everything, yesterday when i was there ( we were p/u 4 gun safes next door) i gave up and left to many guys crowding the counters . The lesson here is, buy it cheap and stack it deep, I still have plenty of pre ban mags. and Black Talons back from the Clinton days ....
  4. No, its all his, this trail runs a couple hundred yards or a more, from a corn field in the center of the land to a bean field on the east side . On the bean field side its easy to get to a over grown field where he mows paths all around it for me,making for easy walks or when its dry,I can drive in . Grow i love that idea it is wide enough in places to plant. That is a great idea . I got to get off this comp. and to the gym and then start my Christmas shopping !
  5. No burning. This was done by the land owner, he was over there taking out a hedgerow and pushing back the thick brush about 50 feet for a few hundred yards, this allows for more rows of corn and beans,he does this around most fields . While he was there he did this old trail for me as it was way to much for me keep open by hand anymore.now he's talking about a bridge across the ditch.... He often knocks down brush and such around my gun stands so i get longer shots and can see 'em coming. I'd like to run the dozer into the thick stuff (its about 15 acres) and make a clearing for a food plot that would be killer in late season when the crops are gone and they stay in there during day light.
  6. I was done as well because the internet weather sites say rain, but the guy on the radio said ending late morning.....
  7. Well this one runs along very thick brush and a hardwoods, which like most hardwoods is thick along the edge. now i can walk in silently, instead of fighting my way through making all kinds of noise. The deer started using it the next day as well,so new places for stands. It also allows excess to an area instead of walking WAY around, is faster and easier to get deer out and stands in . Most folks who hunt thick areas need to cut trails, few to this extreme.....
  8. As far as the mirror a couple years back while walking the dog, I watched a jake go after itself in the crome bumper of a pick up truck ! Funny as heck, then it flew up on the hood as it saw us.
  9. This seems to sum up most of this season....
  10. Make some new trails ! I should be able to slip down these ok...
  11. I used to use our mini van with the middle seats out. One day I had a deer wrapped up in the tarp,I was wearing a white long underwear top with the sleeves pushed up. I had blood on my arms and the sleeves. Went through a State Trooper inspection sticker road block, they never noticed a thing....
  12. I've made my own "bags" out of tarps and Gorllia tape. Hitch hauler is the way to go, its hard to lift them in a trunk by yourself. If you hang them first or even if its a long drag and it lays, the legs become out streched that becomes a pain to stuff them in.
  13. They can't its all fake. The one guy is the town "Fire Chief" on some fire sites this became a hot topic, in fact it became an issue in parts of the fire service. The show had to come out with the truth and say he never made shine before ,during or after the show, he works 60 hours a week at his normal (non tv job) as well . Barry never bought a Storeage locker before being asked by his friend the producer to be on the show Storeage Wars, as you may know Dave Hester is sueing the show saying its all fake and they salt the lockers. Well da, Reality show is a catagory, like action show, drama, comedy and so forth nothing more.
  14. When I picked up the permit forms for my oldest daughter on her 21st Birthday, I was surprised to see a whole page on,"have you ever been treated for X, have you ever seen a consular for X, does your family have a history of X and on and on. We have unrestricted carry here btw and they always did a check with some mental health agency, now they added awhole slew of new questions . This was a year ago . The part that worried me was this, both my kids are "high achievers". The oldest got her BA Suma Cum Laude , and the younger one has even even higher GPA and takes 18 credits per symester. They both saw consulars for stress at school, and one has/had a phobia she saw someone about. So they have to answer yes..... How about your a 4.0 student worked 3 jobs over the summers, never even got a traffic ticket, did volunteer work for years including over seas, but a little stress over grades may keep you from a permit . Even though they have hunting lic. and 870's....... Its not as easy a line to draw as one may think.
  15. Maybe we should allow law abiding citizens, who are mentally stable, and who are properly trained to handle a firearm to be able to carry. We don't already ? I've carried most days for close to 30 years, with my Utah and Fla. permits I'm good to carry in 38 states .
  16. Let 3 doe walk at last light yesterday, stayed home today, will hunt Monday PM maybe Tuesday depending on weather .
  17. Can't watch the video, comp. issues right now. Would like to though , this is an old issue that won't go away even the fire service seems confused even though everyone from the NRA to Myth Busters and well the laws of physics tell us it won't "fire" a bullet. It needs to be in a chamber,"recoil" being that equal and opposite reaction thing we learned about in physics class. bullet melts, powder kind of goes fizz.... sometimes the cases split first.Even if it did "fire" it needs something to launch off of. Every once in awhile I'll see on the news somewhere where FF's stay outside a house fire because of ammo inside going off... I'd of though we were all up to speed it is our job...
  18. never owned a truck.... heres the Buick at base camp Larry.
  19. Well today is the 1st anniversary of my Dads passing. I did not get out in ML last year or the end of SG because all my freetime was spent sitting in Roch. General Hospital . He was a WW II vet. but they sent him home early, first 2 half brothers were killed, then in one week his Uncle and Brother were both killed. After that I guess the Army felt his family paid with enough life and he came home, what was left of it.... He was a deer hunter, but it was a differant era. He had an Remington mod. 11 with a bird barrel that did the job on ducks and deer. All his "gear" could fit in my coat pocket, a fixed blade knife, compass, big silver Zippo type hand warmer and a lenght of cord. That was it fellas, no gps, tree stands, calls, scents, range finders, scopes, google earth photos , headlamps ,headnets, head aches of not killing a deer either , it was a fun time with friends not an obsession or competition that seems to have taken hold of many today ,3 guys to one party permit, not 3 permits to one guy . Tomorrow on my last hunt, I think I'll wear his Dog Tags, and leave my pack of crap home.
  20. back from party,I'm old time for bed. Ya I think I LL hunt Monday Pm,tue. looks very windy who knows. This could be like those TV shows "its the last hour of the last day here in NY...." Really want to see a buck I can shoot size wise , but at this point may just whack a doe for my buddy, something I should have done way back.
  21. To Bad Doc, I'm picking up 4 more gunsafes Monday, 14 gun ones, $150 for non, and $200 for fire "proof". I'd have hooked you up but orders needed to be in by last Fri. I've gotten several a year for guys as the wifes company, clears out old stock, returns, discontinued and so on.
  22. Hopped on stand 3:00 or so,inside corner but on edge of cut corn field. So while watching the woods i turn to look into corn field,NOISE crap I just got busted I think. Yup 2 doe right behind me in corner of field 20 yards, they run a bit stop look back,I raise ML a third deer starts to run that I did not see..but its a flathead as well. They stop at edge of thick brush,I let them walk. Its time to get down,if I shoot one she's going into thick brush, I gotta find her,gut her and drag it a good 1/2 mile and We leave for a party as soon as i get home which is now.... Not worth it for a doe I'll give away, I got shrimp to eat and beer to drink !
  23. Rochester had gun turn in programs for many many years, the first ones at our firehouses. A lot of us FF's picked up great guns for $50,like sweet 16's . The only folks turning them in were folks from the burbs getting rid of their Dads old hunting guns so we'd buy them off them to save them time in line. I'm all for these turn in programs.... A person could walk in a class room of little kids with a double barrel shotgun, and take them out .Think about it are 6 y/o'as going to rush him as he reloads ? Want to get illegal handguns off the street make your's are harder to steal, and don't leave them in your car . As a side note a guy on my crew went to beikirchs to pick up his new gun tonight, about 100 people in line..... I carry every day, same as most guys i know .
  24. just said a big wtf here at work as one of my guys told me, and we switched on cnn
