  1. I have planted double lines of white Spruce alterneted with white pine...all I have are groups of white spruce ..Deer love to eat white pine. I also have Volunteer Norway.the buck love these..but ones that grow..grow fast and HUGE. Remember to always calculate mature height before planting...Re d pine plantations are flavored over the Norway's here by deer ,but both used heavily by them and Turkey.
  2. They'd be just as effective making a regulation stating anyone growing any thing green or edible...including the bushes around the house...or to put up ,do not feed signs for the deer.I walk through the turnips each with bites out of them for weeks, until they are finally gone...green fields so filled with droppings you can barely walk through them with out stepping in a pile..let's not even talk about bean and corn crops..a parade of deer going to small patches of spilled corn after the harvest for days until it's gone...nose to nose... I could see banning the use of out of state..but in state on closed monitored herds is a different story.. It seems they are clueless as to how to write up all these regulations they want.
  3. Finger kept me up half the nite..just not up to it today...glad this happened late in the season... nice deer and good luck.
  4. Thanks...I just need to use heavier Platex gloves over the surgical ones I had on. Usually I skin them when they are still warm..she'd been hanging since Saturday and was very cold. They are so much easier to skin when done right away..We've had great hanging temps but rain in the 30's as well...preferred she didn't hang skinned in the rain. Done and will be quarted and processed tomorrow. Jars are ready for pressure cooking and the jerky will be cut and put in marinade.
  5. It should never be allowed..." Oh you failed...here are the correct answers ,take your certificate and good luck".... I went through .mine and archery then both my kids and their archery. All of them were the same way...That and no weapon handling nor competency required. A joke back then, worse now. IMO.
  6. I don't get to ever call in sick...I finished dinner served it up and hand washed the dishes...May need to call the Dr' s tomorrow...it doesn't seem to want to stop bleeding.
  7. Cutting up blue hubbard for dinner tonight..sliced off the top ,including down to half the nail ,my pinky finger... Lol Let's talk fountain....Now just crazy throbbing...I guess one messed up pinky from a dog biting half of it off wasn't good enough... Now I'm nearly symmetrical ....hahahaha
  8. There's a lot of what I call wing shooters around here...not quite as bad since rifle...but still a lot of 3 round vollies...I had one guy do that in the field facing our porch...I stood there talking to the neighbor on the phone when a deer ran from her place through the middle of that field ...the guy never stopped firing at that deer going 90 miles and hour even as it passed between us...our porch had bright orange hunting clothes hanging on hooks ,,Out side open deck... He must have really been moving for It didn't take me that long to hangup, find the Dodge keys, put on a jacket and shoes...I lost a bit of rubber in the drive that day...but he was gone by the time I got to the lease camp where he was parked...We had bullet holes in our basement windows when we moved in...Yep makes ya wonder..
  9. It's taking me forever to skin this deer...I do as much as I can before it feels like someone has dropped my fingers into a vat of boiling oil...then I have to run in and run them under cold water to luke warm so the the pain goes away...My Gosh it's cold out there and the deer is colder!
  10. I read the rules...I don't see where the deer have to be NYS buck or non "farm " buck....but if all those are NYS, not all had tags on them.. NYS is showing pretty well on what buck can grow to in some areas...I would like to see them post the area they were taken from. Kudos to all the ladies...they are dropping some mighty fine deer!
  11. I wasn't calling you out...just is what I was wondering that's all...We got some snow just not that deep. I know guys in the Buffalo area had some deep snows not long ago...Like I said nice deer...I know NYS can have great deer I've seen them
  12. Doesn't take away from it being a really nice deer...Though my mind kept going back to who had Belly high snows in NY on 11-23-16?....We talk about the weather here all the time...
  13. Yes the gun shot hit low and upper leg...tracked it to 3 huge beds ,hot tub sized soaked blood on snow...then to a stream and a group of hunters that intersected us....saying they saw nothing from where they came...We waited until they left and FIL and I followed stream where they floated him down and dragged him out...probably while their buddy's where "being helpful"... There had been no other shots so that leg wound killed him...BTW on the trail we recovered 3 different long pieces of leg bone... So the point...... yes they can be recovered...he went 500 yrds to that stream....
  14. Good Luck Eddie...I'm headed out to work on the doe before the real cold sets in tonight...no wind ...It will kill me not to go out....but I want her done before any other...will be doing jerky and canning plus bulk sausage...
  15. When my neighbor was nearly shot out of her tree stand and Officer Hill came out and actually investigate... He told us they managed to trace back a shot gun incident, don't ask me how, to find the slug in question on another case traveled 1/2 mile be for hitting...
  16. Mr B dropped a nice 8 point at camp many years ago that was dang near or over 400yrds as I recall... that was with a smooth bore 16 gauge and NO SCOPE.. Sorry didn't see the bold on...anyways off hand. Culver knows estimating is a big part of his job... he's very good at his job...he estimated 1 or 2 foot above the shoulder on a steep down hill trajectory...that was when camp was all open ...he squeezed the trigger as we all stood there watching ...the buck dropped where it stood... He'd never do that again and it surprised the Hades out of all of us... but yes it can be done...should it...No... he would have felt like crap if it ended in a wounded deer. But we were all very young then and age makes you wiser...
  17. Let me ask, for admittedly I haven't seen the full regulation proposal... Besides saying all artificial lures must state no biological waste was used...Are they going to ban the use and then allow the sales in NYS of real deer urine ...you know like that worthless no feeding /baiting ban does? I mention this because..I see that several years after getting their butts kicked in court, they FINALLY are going to tighten the baiting/feeding law wording,BTW to include all you back yard bird watchers..... Yes God forbid a deer comes to your feeder and you get caught just outside your picture window...you will get a ticket...I suppose they could barrow the sheriff dept. drone or use their own...to do neighborhood patrols to catch the dreaded inadvertent deer /bird feeding criminals.... get out those infrared cams ...I mean with pot starting to become a bit less illegal and more so as time goes by...they have to find some use for this equipment......yes...drip drip dripping with sarcasm.
  18. Yep.... think I've mentioned this a bunch of times over the years...not all deer do the same things in all areas or situations...yep years...Any ways I shot a doe that literally somersaulted half way down the hill after the hit...I was thinking Ohhh Shite!...for I was in a climber in a walking cast and Mr B was home with a crushed foot..literally crushed, Excavator fell on it,,...anyways about that time I see her running back up the hill to drop dead right on the 4 wheeler trail... they go up hill here all the time...but they also run down hill straight to the swamps..Deer are not made by "cookie cutters" as it were.
  19. Today I did a bit of snow tracking....looks like at least one big buck and a couple of big doe are walking through...the buck tracks went past 7 stands and 2 blinds wondering through the property...A very long gate, not splade but hooves with a nickle sized space between the entire length of each side. Big dew claw imprints on a walking gate and very long wide hooves. He missed every cam but his buddy didn't and day light! ...I know this is one of the 5 small bucks I have seen regularly.. day light pics are increasing... temps getting colder after today...
  20. That!...lol.... Was that 18 points I saw? On a very symmetrical rack...you don't see that a lot with so much gong on...What a beauty..
  21. Airdale I couldn't agree more..Now here is another true story to ponder for such people. Two months ago I run into one of the lease guys wife...In conversation she mentioned their Shepherd was hit and killed in front of their house by a car... The driver said hey it just ran out and I couldn't see it...big bog. She goes into the details then says " We doubt it was accidental. " It was the same guy that accused her husband of shooting his dog during hunting season. He's been accused more than once . Just no proof..he actually has his kid or guys he allows to hunt the lease do it. (Yes they all talk ) Any ways that happened, dog shot, several years ago...pay back has a long memory for some and they now have to live with knowing they were the cause of their dog dying in ditch. I do not know what prompted that guy to shoot those dogs ,I do not know if he called them in, in the past..just to see warnings given and no action. The lease guy..knowing him.doubtful a call was made. I do know the DEC and the cops need to be better trained on what a problem this is and ticket owners not listen excuses and lies. One neighbor wouldn't have scars and I wouldn't have been taken to the hospital by ambulance. Every story has some sort of back ground..the guy was wrong..but I say that not knowing what was the back ground. So I'm not going to go to simple " buck" greed.
  22. You sir obviously did not read any of what I wrote.
  23. Let me point something out to you on get a guard dog..for one thing most guys on here have no idea what your talking about as far as costs. Then the feeding and vet bills ...I had good fencing ....they literally chewed and tore through...I never needed to protect them from wild animals other the occatinal kid going missing...and the coyote that attacked and killed our very first goats...ripping them from the barn. Why did that happen?..because this same neighbor had an open sheep dump up on their property attraciing coyote to the area. They eventually dissipated. Now my animals confined on my land..I should not have to endure further expensive so anyone owning a dog can be allowed to have said dog run wild, period!
  24. Congrats..and in warmer weather just skin and quarter it up ...make sure you have some bottles of frozen water in the freezer...I use juice, quart milk bottles and even water bottles ..buy your self a big cooler..or two smaller. That way it doesn't sit in melted ice and you can do a leg or shoulder a night. Just rotate frozen bottles out as they melt..wash/ bleach out side and stick in the freezer again.
  25. Gosh..there for a moment I thought they'd managed to change it yet again...I remember this whole conversation from August....
