I'd ask her preference first. But if it were me, and Mrs. wanted to spend a week in a secluded spot, I'd go with fishing. It's less of a solitary endeavor. Bow hunting would require more prep, scouting, possibly dragging a stand with you, and a lot of alone time.

Elk and or deer hunting Idaho /Montana/ Wyoming
Uncle Nicky replied to turkeyfeathers's topic in Bow Hunting
I would imagine it would be extremely rewarding, if it all came together. I've been out to Wyoming a few times for deer & antelope with a rifle, but that's low elevation hunting. Once was DIY on public land, twice I paid a trespass fee to a rancher (unguided). A lot of planning, a lot of driving, a lot of hiking (and walking meat out if you kill something). Licenses are pricey for out of staters. Personally, I'd head to Colorado, it's easier to get tags there and highest chance of success. Good luck if you take the plunge!!! -
It has to be a labor of love only. I got sucked into the whole food plot thing when I bought my camp. Tried doing it myself with an ATV, soon found out that was a mistake. So I hired guys with tractors to do the work, it was costing about $1,000 an acre at the time, about 15 years ago. Some years the plots worked, some years the weeds overtook everything. In a good year, everyone would find out about the plots & hunt them when I wasn't there. And honestly, the deer were there before I started the plots, and were there after. Now I just hunt the trails heading to the neighbors corn fields, LOL.

What is there to hunt near las vegas ?
Uncle Nicky replied to Hunter007's topic in General Chit Chat
Yes, Nevada is big. Las Vegas is in the bottom corner, surrounded by desert for hundreds of miles in every direction. My father (big hunter) retired there, and eventually died there. I've been there many times to visit. The only time he hunted was when he got an invite to go to Utah. When I went to sell his guns for my mother, I was constantly lowballed, the excuse being, "nobody hunts around here, sorry". The O.P. asked if there is anywhere CLOSE to hunt there, I would still say no. Unless you want to go out at night & shoot jackrabbits or coyotes (if you are lucky). There are a LOT of bighorn sheep near Vegas, but you have a better chance of hitting the Powerball than drawing a tag for them. Supposedly there are mule deer on Mount Charleston, but I've never seen any. My take was that the O.P. was going on a vacation, and wanted to take a day or two to hunt. Just about every species in Nevada requires drawing a tag, making plans & arrangements months or years in advance, maybe hiring an outfitter, having a 4WD truck or horses, etc. Not something you just decide to do at the spur of the moment. If you look at the map, the areas in Nevada that are promising to hunt are HUNDREDS of miles to the north of Las Vegas. Logistically, you'd be much closer to hunting spots in Utah or Arizona, but still, this requires putting in for tags and picking the right week to travel. Personally, if I was picking a spur-of-the moment hunt, I'd make the drive to California, and hunt for turkeys in the spring, or hogs any time. Licenses are OTC, and there are healthy populations of both. It would take you the same amount of time as driving to Carson City or Reno, and cost a lot less in the long run. -
I had this discussion with my oldest son the other day... IMO, pizza, if done correctly, is a thing of beauty, and taste perfection....just a little sauce, generous amount of cheese, and a thin crust that is just slighly chewy at the rim, so hot it almost burns your tongue....I can't think of many other foods that are so good when done correctly. They have a local butchery of pizza that everyone around here raves about, they call it "tomato pie"; it's Sicilian pizza with a LOT of sauce glopped on and sprinkled with parmesan only..served room temperature. It's OK I guess if you're half drunk and want to put something in your mouth, but I never "got it". My one buddy brought a couple down to Georgia on the last hog trip, the guys & girls down there all raved about it too, but their idea of good pizza is Pizza Hut (no Italians in that neck of the woods, LOL). Go figure.... I have an old pizza stone, I rarely use it. There are a couple shops near me that make it just as good or better, and they always have a coupon to use. Good luck on your new purchase!

Not much really, unless you want to drive to Utah or Arizona. Lots of stripers in Lake Mead, but they aren't real big. -
Saturday made the annual trip to Montauk. This place NEVER disappoints! Had the boat limit of stripers and a handful of blues by 8:30 AM, so we bottom fished for jumbo porgies and sea bass the rest of the day. A nice steady pick of quality fish! Ceviche on tonight's dinner menu. It has been a tough summer as far as charter fishing goes, I had quite a few trips either cancelled or rescheduled until next year due to either weather or boat malfunctions. I was watching the marine forecast all week, 7-10 foot waves forecast for Long Island, but finally laid down some Saturday, and we braved the ride through NYC to get there. I have a reschedule planned for this weekend coming up to fish for walleyes in Erie, PA, fingers & toes crossed!!

My parents went a lot, they were always trying to convince me to go. My wife & I finally went this sunmmer for ouir 25th anniversary, went to Alaska, sailed from Seattle, round trip/inner passage, 7 days. I would have liked to taken a few days & gone to Denali also, but my wife didn't want to stay away from home that long. We decided to go with Princess, mainly because it caters to a slightly older, slightly more sober crowd than some of the lower priced lines. Just didn't want to be stuck for 7 days with a bunch of 20-somethings drinking around the clock and acting up. I set up my own fishing trip, which was cancelled the day of due to supposed boat malfunction, but I can't fault the cruise line for that. Pros- beautiful scenery, clean boat, excellent food and all you can eat, it really was an inexpensive trip (excluding the 1 day we spent seeing the sights of Seattle-never again). We chose to eat dinner each night with different people, and most were decent folks, didn't really feel uncomfortable with anyone. Plenty to do on board, whether it was seminars, shows, TV in the cabin, hanging out reading on deck, casino, nightclubs. Service was impeccable, tips are included in the fare, so they aren't hustling tips (but they'll take them if offered). Cons- the ship was constantly trying to sell something, whether it was art, jewelry, future cruise trips; not sure if this is just Princess, or all the cruise lines? But I will say there was no "hard sell"; if you told them no, they'd leave you alone. Day trips at the ports were a little cheesy & overpriced (whale watching, "nature tour", train into Yukon), and always crowded. All ports had 4 or 5 ships with 3,000 people stopping each day, so there really is no "off the beaten path" type of expeditions available, unless you wanted to rent a plane or helicopter for $1,000 (and most days it's too rainy to fly anyway). If I go back to Alaska, I'd fly to Anchorage & plan my own agendas & hotels, and probably stay a couple days fishing at a lodge near Kenai. My wife is already talking about another cruise, but I think we've already done everything there is on the Alaska coast, so next time it may be New England/Canada, SE USA, or California coast. But I'd really like to try seeing Alaska on our own. We shall see. I worked for a year when I was in the restaurant business in the Caribbean, I really have no interest in going back there.

Which hunting weapon and season do you like the best ?
Uncle Nicky replied to Hunter007's topic in General Chit Chat
Spring-turkey with a shotgun, hogs with dogs & a pistol or AK Fall (in this order) Turkey with a shotgun Squirrels with a shotgun or .22 Deer with a rifle or slug gun Deer with a bow -
No, actually I keep losing deer hunting land each year. Urban sprawl close to home, and selling my camp in Allegany county NY after this season. But I'm not worried, there are always deer in the spots I still have, and I really don't need to kill more than 3 a year.

What's the worst legal caliber that people use for hunting deer
Uncle Nicky replied to Hunter007's topic in General Chit Chat
I was never one to push the envelope...I never was interested in experimenting to see what I could get away with or push the boundaries, especially on a live animal. I grew up hunting with buckshot, and didn't know any better...but as the years went by, I realized it cripples a LOT of deer, so I moved on to slugs. I think we tend to overthink some of this stuff...I'm more interested in finding a BETTER shell to kill an animal more quickly (such as HeviShot or TSS for turkeys). I curse the day they went to steel shot for waterfowl. I know not everyone thinks like me, and that is OK. Maybe I'm getting soft as I age, but I hate seeing anything suffer. -

.22-250 or .223. I will lend you a deer rifle if you need one, but please have some respect for the game. These are for shooting little guys in black pajamas or woodchucks. -
Thai style garlic crabs, followed by a bowl of peach melba.

Free pass from significant other . Who ?
Uncle Nicky replied to turkeyfeathers's topic in General Chit Chat
Since this is never going to happen, I'd probably shop around and see if I could view some sex tapes first, and kick a few tires before I make a decision. Might as well make the most of this fantasy.... -

Nice pup! -
Sitting still: 25 is about as low as I'd go. Walking: 15. It stops being fun after that.

Killer dinner tonight....rabbit cacciatore. With penne, a garden salad and garlic toast. Great way to use up seasonal vegetables & herbs. The dogs waited patiently by the table for scraps, they'd been smelling it cook for 3 hours.

Notice this post has no pictures.... Yet another charter rescheduled, this has been a strange summer.... Walleye trip to Erie PA in July rescheduled to this weekend due to weather, rescheduled again to September 22 due to weather, which is why I'm typing this instead of being out on the boat. Are walleye even in the eastern part of the lake that time of year? That's almost salmon spawning time.... Catfishing trip in July on the Susky rescheduled to September due to boat malfunction.... Cruise to Alaska 2 weeks ago, the highlight for me was the salmon/halibut charter I set up a year in advance, cancelled the day of due to boat malfunction.... Just praying that the weather cooperates in September Not usually one to complain, but this is getting silly. Guess I'll go shoot my rifles & make sure they're "on" for hunting season today, LOL.

I got into the game late. I bought a used Bear compound bow, I still have it. Killed a few deer with it. When crossbows became legal in PA, I jumped on the bandwagon quickly and bought a Barnett. I liked hunting with a crossbow, killed a lot more deer, but the Barnett was a headache from Day 1, it was at the factory for repair every year after hunting season. When I cracked the limb on it, I tossed it in the trash, and bought a Horton (which I still have & use). I will probably never buy another bow or crossbow unless mine break, I just can't catch the bug that most other guys do for archery.

Yes sir, I've probably seen it 10 times. They show it on TBS a lot. -

a .44 mag revolver, and a .357 mag revolver. If I can't kill them with 12 shots, I'm beating them to death with the empty pistols.
