  1. Too late for an edit for my last note...alot of folks say, "wool in the summer?" Darn tootin. Remember, you are insulating against heat in summer, as well as cold in winter.
  2. Forget about anything cotton...comfortable for casual wear, but it matts down, keeps your feet damp and cold. Here is another shout out for Smart Wool. Merino wool socks, which is a long fiber wool. Wears like cotton for comfort. I used to wear them daily year round. A properly sized and fitted shoe/boot (fitted with the sock you are going to wear with it) doesnt need a thicker sock for comfort. They have a medium wt/ hiking sock that is my favorite. They arent cheap, but you will fall in love with them.
  3. .22 rimfire bolt action. Get her out gun handling and shooting....alot. No better round for learning to shoot with, no recoil, minimal noise (of course appropriate hearing and eye protection at all times!). There are alot of light shooting rounds out there....but I would aim in for a 30 cal.....sorry, no fan of the smaller calibers, no matter who shoots them. There are a zillion choices in 30-30. I was amazed at how easy shooting the .270 was when i finally got one, but they call for a full size action which is a heavier gun. Start her easy, let her get used to the feel, sound and report of a light arm before even thinking of going to a regular centerfire. If she shies away at this point it is very difficult to bring a shooter back to center.
  4. I love hunting with my Lyman percussion great plains rifle. It just seems so....right. I have taken a few deer with it and have always had clean one shot kills...but I also hunt close. I prefer it and have more confidence in it than my T/C Triumph...until it rains. This year I am looking forward to hunting with my new Lyman Pedersoli Great Plains flintlock. I am still zeroing it in but am pretty close. The sights arent quite allowing me to adjust to my normal sight in ML dead on range (fifty yards for woods hunting), but I am working on that. I should be able to use the same load as I use for the percussion....80 grains of FF with patched .530 round ball. I needed to drop the charge to 70 for the flinter to lower my point of impact which bothers me.
  5. Almost a no win scenario. No matter what potential conditions the little girl may have had, it is still a child. Should have would haves dont get us anywhere, but I do agree 1) that an intervention to the extent that harm to the child was avoided at the moment was warranted, and 2) the police should probably have been notified of an assault on the child at the time....The fathers behavior certainly isnt a one time, and likely other family members are subject to it. Notifying the police would put it on their radar...and perhaps he already is. Sometimes just the knowing that they are caught in the act can help deter future behavior. Sometimes.
  6. The .54 was alot more popular before inlines came out, but at least I think in the east .50s inline have become a bit of the standard.
  7. I dunno....Turkeys are tough ol' birds, and I dont know if I would have faith in .22 mag performing a clean kill...I hve over the years bumped over alot of wood chucks, maybe ...some other similar sized critters, and I never thought it was a particularly clean killing round. I have.....heard from reliable sources that it failed to stop Canadian Geese cleanly with solid shots, which...must have been heartbreaking to see. Centerfire rounds would damage meat too much. I tend to think shotguns are the best (keeping in mind the ideal shots with them are only head shots).
  8. I have used a grunt call quite a few times to get a deers attention. I have never had any luck blind calling them, but a deer in the distance, running, etc. I have called closer or gottent them to stop. I have also just done a hard "blow" through my nose successfully.
  9. I too worked as a machinist. I enjoyed the craft of it, but we were mainly job lots, and it was mind numbingly repetitious at times. I also took advantage of an opportunity to move into nursing...my twentieth year currently. There is ample training benefits out there, depending on your situation you may need to look for them. Dont disregard online classes. Good luck!
  10. A co-worker of mine was first generation from Greece if I remember correctly. Holidays they always had goat. A neighbor called the cops on em once (they bought it on the hoof) and dispatched it and processed it in the garage. The cop who showed was totally understanding and supportive, just suggested they close the garage door next time. A patients family used to raise goats for meat, but they sold them also on the hoof, which would be more than I would want. A butcher in a neighboring county sells small packages of it which I have bought and curried, I thought it was great.
  11. Great pic! This past winter for the first time I found bobcat track near my cabin.
  12. A camp I was happily a guest at for a few years had another fellow visit. He plopped himself down on day one and declared he was on vacation and dont expect much from him. He literally expected us to feed and serve him...He was not allowed back and was angry that he wasnt after having such a good time the first year! Rule one of being a guest at camp....wash every dish, fill every glass/mug and kiss every old farts ass. And like it! And if you are smart....better not be very good at cards either!
  13. I have been reloading for over forty years, and take my season way too seriously to consider getting caught short. I dont do much off season shooting and also have several different rifles in different, but capable deer hunting cartridges...30/30, 8x57, .308 and .270 ....before we even get to black powder. No worries. And for sure I dont burn ammo unnecessarily in a time when we know it is in short supply.
  14. I wonder if they were reared in the hatcheries prior to the drop? Anyone here remember Rod Hunters front page article from the seventies on the accidental release of piranhas into the CNY trout waters? Recommendations to stay 3 feet back until heavy rains washed them out?
  15. I always thought the gun itself was more the factor for carry comfort than the holster (for IWB). Old slabsides (1911 with minimal sites, close to original configuration) is the most comfortable individual sidearm I have ever carried largely because it is so....flat. For many years a PPK knock off was my primary...a number of simple slip in IWB holsters , but there isnt much to a PPK. Sometimes to optimize the guns carry - ability (is that a word?) you pick the gun you are most likely to be able to carry...sometimes the ol' gun, like the shoe, just doesnt fit.
  16. How old do you have to be in NY to qualify for the senior pricing...that is, I am pretty sure there was one. I bought mine over twenty years ago, and it has paid for itself several times. You can put anything on it you want...bow, ML, big game, small game, etc. I have ML, big and small game. You get your doe tags free each year.
  17. Warning to all hunting camps out there looking for members.......I wonder what else is in his past? Hey, any of the camp members involved with this forum?
  18. Just chill. Like most new hunters are, it doesnt pay to be all keyed up...you are tense, stiff and twitchey. As you get more experienced you ...chill. Wander in the woods taking your time, absorbing whats around you. You are naturally less intrusive and more aware.
  19. Frequently over many years. Not in the Catskills though. Check with the DEC (go to your regional office and ask for information ...they will have gobs) for state game management areas. You can scope them out online, but scouting ahead of time will give you real time idea of conditions, access, etc. Generally on state land you can camp almost anywhere unless otherwise designated, but will be restricted how close to the water you can be unless it is a designated site. Of course not every body of water has car access. There are different designations of woodlands for development/access. Even within a relatively small area you will have different designations. Certainly the Catskills will be the same...State Wild forest, Primitive lands, Game Management areas, etc.
  20. Oh, and your county permit office may also limit the number of transactions/additions, removals, etc. that can be done at one time.
  21. Go to your county permit office and explain your situation with your father. Get it in writing what YOUR county wants. Regardless of what is supposed to be legal to do in NY, individual county permit offices knowledge and instructions vary. Most are very helpful if you are pleasant. Visit in person.
  22. I really think the real Mckoy (black powder) is the way to go with my MLers....more sure ignition, I get better groups, and dangit, you should clean your firearms after shooting them anyway...I dont think the substitutes buy enough leeway to make it worthwhile. Have fun!
  23. Cool! Gonna use blackpowder or substitute...or a better question, do you have any?
