  1. Actually that is exactly what I was referring, but not very clearly. I believe it is the original tag holder who is limited by what they can sign over, not the recipient. Good point to clarify, not that I have any interest in looking for tags like that.
  2. In theory, as many deer as you can get tags signed over to you if you (speaking non specifically) like to kill that much.
  3. In the correct seasons/regions. Actually one buck bow, one buck muzzleloader (if you have bow and ML tags) and one rifle. Please dont just because you can. I can, but it would be a real slob of me to do so when in my area other folks struggle to get one.
  4. I also on several occasions have used NY based auction houses. They took photos, posted them online and took care of all paperwork. The guns then went for going price, and the auciton co. got 20%, a MUCH better deal then you will get from any gun shop. Forget pawn shops, etc. Selling to gun shops, etc. you will be lucky to get 25 to 30% of their actual value. I happily have used Hessney's in Geneva NY several times, and actually have some there now. With current gun/ammo supply shortages, prices are very good...likely at an all time high.
  5. I was lucky enough to be invited every year to my Dads friends camp for opening w/e in the western ADKs. We looked forward to that every year, and loved every minute. Deer were few and far between, but the bull was everywhere!
  6. In my neighborhood, ya drop a foil wrapper and a scrapper snatches it up. A fridge or stove wont have time to cast a shadow.
  7. Actually it sold last night (sat. 5-29). Hated to see it go, we had alot of adventures in it from Green Lake in Tully, to the Salmon River, Finger Lake chain, Lake Lila, Stillwater, Lowes Lake and Bog River Flow, ....Simply put the old girl was replaced by a younger and lighter Mad River Malecite which is much easier to move around. I had a number of calls on it (from Craigslsit) but everyone wanted me to commit to a price sight unseen....I only dicker in person. Old school.
  8. Dont eat or drink anything but water...even smoking can attract them. Bears are just an occaisional visitor in my camps area. Although I would like an occaisional sightng, no doubt camps are better off without them. I saw a store up near Old Forge where the bear literally tore and chewed its way through the outside wall to the kitchen on the other side, with bad results inside!
  9. About 25 years ago I was hunting in Georgia. I went to use the outdoor shower and the camp owner kind of off handedly mentions...."if you run into Henry in the shower, dont hurt him. He wont hurt you".... Okay...of course I have to play cool, have my shower and go back in without running into "Henry". Okay, says I when I went in. Who or what is Henry? Henry is the ten foot long KIng snake that lives under the shower. He likes to come out in warm showers..He eats rattle snakes, so we like Henry. Now, I dont think that I am afraid of snakes, but I can guarantee you that if Henry joined me in the shower, they would have heard my scream in Syracuse.
  10. 17 foot early 70s (best I remember) mfg aluminum canoe, I dont know the mfg. Very good shape with typical expected scrapes from family use over fifty years, no leaks (as of when last in the water about six years ago). It has an old small professionally done repair...I was a kid, if I recall done by the seller when we got it. Great boat for family use, will easily last another fifty years with minimal reasonable care. Also listed on Craigslist. 450 or best reasonable. We are in the town of Constantia. Comes with two adult jackets, one youth and two paddles.
  11. Funny thing is actually we have two a/c, diff. brands both in use last fall that are acting the exact same way. At about 500.oo for an equivalent new one, figure worth looking into it anyway...but cant find anyone.
  12. Well, somewhat off topic of the outdoors, but when it is too dang hot outdoors we gotta go in! Anyone have any experience with portable air conditioner repairs? Our 12000 btu Haier was working fine last fall, but does not cool now. Not much to look at that I can trouble shoot on my own. Any advice/ repair shops close to Syracuse NY anyone can recommend? I am thinking the unit is about 7 years old.
  13. Wheres the pics of the Willis?????
  14. My wife and I were just talking about this (Oneida Lake sturgeon) yesterday.. We live in the town of Constantia, and have seen the babies at the hatchery in the past, along with the little paddlefish they release in the western part of the state. I have seen pictures of teams of horses pulling trot lines...literally a mile or more long, out of Lake Ontario, where the sturgeon were considered nuisance fish, due to the damage to fishing nets. They then stacked them on shore to dry out and burned them! Does anyone know if the baby sturgeon are still being raised and released?
  15. The rear sight is spring steel...very tough. I just installed a taller front German Silver site (sight in tomorrow) which I am sure will do the job just fine.
  16. For an easy backwoods getaway, we love the Bog River Flow area and Lake Lila. We are hoping to get there this year. Our most frequent getaway is The Thousand Island region, but it is a very busy area mid spring through september. My choice for getaway from it all....the Canadian Maritimes....New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland....I have been very lucky to be up there quite a number of times for bear and moose hunting. Beautiful country, great people, very layed back and stress free. I think Newfoundland is the best of the best...sparsely populated and the most amazing scenery....huge stinking bears, moose, caribou...sigh. I hope to take the wife up there for a two week seat of the pants road trip over the next year or two.
  17. Been there...didnt stay at the cabins, but have hiked Chimney a few times. We would love to stay at the cabins. Beautiful quiet area.
  18. Cool! I have yet to get one on one of mine. What area are you in?
  19. I am lucky in that I can get to my camp year round...sometimes in the winter I need to hike in though, it is about 1/2 mile off the county road. When we bought it we had a one hour travel circle to ensure we could get up more frequently...especially just for day trips, etc. I have ten acres but am pretty much surrounded by state and county land. I have monday off and am going up sunday after work. As it is a rustic camp up on blocks, the drains are susceptible to frost heave and each spring I need to patch em a bit. I drain the water system (collect water into a couple of gravity fed food grade 65 gallon drums) in the fall, and open the valves to start collecting again end of april or so. I also need to place an order with a local quarry for crushed limestone, as this spring we are putting in a stone walkway so we dont fall on our butt every time it rains (camp is slightly down hill) and spring/fall. The camp is fully insulated except for the floor...I am spray foaming that this summer. Due to limited water and the somewhat improvised septic, difficult to turn into a full time residence, even if I wanted to. If I did, I wouldnt have a refuge.
  20. Too late for an edit for my last note...alot of folks say, "wool in the summer?" Darn tootin. Remember, you are insulating against heat in summer, as well as cold in winter.
  21. Forget about anything cotton...comfortable for casual wear, but it matts down, keeps your feet damp and cold. Here is another shout out for Smart Wool. Merino wool socks, which is a long fiber wool. Wears like cotton for comfort. I used to wear them daily year round. A properly sized and fitted shoe/boot (fitted with the sock you are going to wear with it) doesnt need a thicker sock for comfort. They have a medium wt/ hiking sock that is my favorite. They arent cheap, but you will fall in love with them.
  22. .22 rimfire bolt action. Get her out gun handling and shooting....alot. No better round for learning to shoot with, no recoil, minimal noise (of course appropriate hearing and eye protection at all times!). There are alot of light shooting rounds out there....but I would aim in for a 30 cal.....sorry, no fan of the smaller calibers, no matter who shoots them. There are a zillion choices in 30-30. I was amazed at how easy shooting the .270 was when i finally got one, but they call for a full size action which is a heavier gun. Start her easy, let her get used to the feel, sound and report of a light arm before even thinking of going to a regular centerfire. If she shies away at this point it is very difficult to bring a shooter back to center.
