I was probably pre-kindergarten when I became fascinated by dads hunting coat, and its pockets contents, constantly badgering him to take me hunting. He would take me for walks in the woods, he toting his shotgun. I remember picking up acorns, pinecones, feathers, whatever else we came across. Listening to geese flying overhead, the fall night sky with the clouds ghosting across the moon... I have a modest camp in the north woods, that hopefully I will always own, and into my old tottering age be able to hobble into the woods to sit with a rifle, until I cant hobble no more. It has never stopped. So I guess...regardless if I could carry a gun, all my life. Closing sixty years, not including the cradle years.

To enjoy as much time outside as I can. If I am lucky, I hope to take a good meat deer during early ML season, hopefully with my flintlock. That allows me to enjoy the whole rest of the season taking my time for another deer. I always take the first (early ML) week, and then the last week of the season off. Ideally, I usually take my last (sometimes first)deer the last week end.

!! I hope for speedy recovery! I went to ladder stands years ago for increased safety, but still...regardless of height, I need to use a safety harness more. It only takes a fall of a few feet for a serious injury.

I can appreciate as well as anyone a good wild bred buck, legally taken. The super bred freaks to me are ugly and unnatural. Okay, so I prefer Scarlet Johansen (sic?) to Dolly Parton. I remember reading in one of the sporting magazines how the then #1 B/C buck hunters life was totally changed for shooting his buck (legally). Between endorsements, show fees, magazine articles etc. he became a moderatly wealthy man. There is big bucks in those deer. Unfortunately.

I cant help but get annoyed with the folks telling us to sell ...both our house and camp....due to the high demand and prices. What is so difficult to understand that to replace either we also will be having to pay much more, and likely will not end up with as much as we started?

When we were looking for a camp, I wasnt finding much listed. We simply went driving. Pull out the map (laptop, whatever) and start cruising. We found alot of properties that were not listed, and ended up buying one.

Taking my Life in a New (old) Direction
Daveboone replied to wildcat junkie's topic in General Chit Chat
That bike looks to be in great condition! I just put my 88 HD Electra Glide back on the road this summer after a minor overhaul, and am living it. I put about 150 miles on it today roaming the Tug Hill region. -
I wonder how far off the ground that engine part is?

Sighting a ML scope in is the same as a regular centerfire rifle. Absolutely be sure to fire from a rest to minimize needed shots and be as still as possible. Dont worry about the "200 yard accuracy". In real life, damn few folks can hit squat at 200 yards with a centerfire, and big fat ML rounds drop alot faster. Worry about what you actually hunt for distances. Start at about 25 yards, unless wildly off, two or three shot groups then adjust. I sight mine in out to fifty, but I am strictly open sights with patch and ball.

What about contacting Remington themselves?

You can buy a black powder revolver (like a bp rifle) online and have it legally delivered to your door. Usually. Depends on vendor. Once you own the components you need to have it registered on your permit. Brick and mortar stores in NY will usually have a store policy that you must have a NYS pistol permit in order to buy one.

3rd year Taxidermist looking to mount your trophies (capital region)
Daveboone replied to 518BowSlayer's topic in Taxidermy
I think your deer, and especially Bullwinkle look just fine! I seldom have anything up to a mount, but I will certainly keep you in mind. -
Awesome! We love the river, and it would be our dream retirement region. heading up there next week end. Lots of open water in front of you....i am thinking westward, toward Cape Vincent?

Keep in mind to post above snowfall levels, or if there is a ditch, at least eyelevel from a vehicle on the road.

Too warm for me with too much else going on. On top of that I would be concerned for getting my deer processed quickly enough in temps that are still summerlike...jeesh, less than two weeks away. I would love to have a late season (like the southern tier holiday hunt) where I am, but it isnt wise...the deer are yarding up by then.

? Being able to hunt 1/2 hour earlier and later shouldnt affect a hunters judgement of if they SHOULD shoot. I dont see why it would affect recovery at all.

I used 295 power belts with my inline, always had one shot drops. I used 777, but sold my inline in favor of my traditional ML. This year will be strictly .54 cap and ball with 80 grains of black powder, which also always produced one shot drops.

I never understood how baiting (or feeding wild deer year round) is illegal, yet feed corn labeled "Deer Corn" is sold....or the myriad other salt licks, etc.

What I miss most are book stores. We have a Barnes and Noble nearby, but it is about the only book store in the area. Granted, between Ebay and Amazon you can usually find ten times the books on a subject much cheaper,

I have done quite a few repairs...properly. The difficult part with this is opening up the crack enough to get the glue in there. What does it look like from the end? I would likely take a small drill bit and matching dowel, and drill from the reciever end in along the crack. Slightly pry to open the crack a bit to get glue into it, then tap the dowels in. Gorilla glue is good, I usually use two part epoxy, but even Elmers is pretty good...you just make sure you seal the wood well. As mentioned by others, fifteen minute project. Make sure in the future you dont tighten down your stock too tight. that is the most common reason for cracks in that area.

If the law was you can only own one gun what would it be ?
Daveboone replied to phantom's topic in General Chit Chat
As more time goes by, I am more inclined to be thinking of choosing one of my muzzleloaders. Most likely my flinter in .54 cal. If things were so screwy you only had one gun, chances are getting ammo for even that would be dicey. No problems with that for me. Worse case, all the ingredients for my powder at Walmart (yep, been there done that) and flint...well, I am a crappy knapper, but no one regulates rocks! Now, currently blackpowder firearms do not even fall under the category of modern arms, you can buy them on line, no registration. IF that is still the situation, then my decision is just as easy. I still have my ML, so I add a 20 gauge Ithaca 37 with a slug bbl and ventilated rib varichoke for all small game hunting, etc. Tough call on that one though....it may be replaced by a Colt 1911 .45 with a .22 conversion kit. -
Sure is a ringer for the pic of the Yellow Crowned Night Heron...which I have never seen in the flesh.

Fewer hunters, but alot more deer taken in recent years. There was a lot more "social " hunters. Many hunters went into the woods just to hang out. Nowadays todays hunters expect results more (for better or worse). In the seventies, you were more likely to see Krag Jorgensons, Lee Enfields, Mausers or Springfields in deer hunters hands than a Remington or Winchester (or whatever), and for many hunters a break open shotgun was the weapon. You used what you had. We considered a year successful if we saw a buck.

huh! that is the first doper I ever heard of who had cash in his pocket!

I am a long time retailer (no longer), and when I saw the half hearted way Gander was restructuring their stores, I called this when the transition happened. I never thought much of Gander Mountain, but there are fewer and fewer outdoor oriented stores around than ever.
