Doc, in the top picture the birds in the foreground are pigeons but all the others are dove. The farmer always encouraged us to shoot all the pigeons we could but they are a very wary bird, after the first one hits the dirt. They are edible but far from my first choice for table fare. Most years the limit in PA for dove has been 15 but is/was 12 some years. It is a very good day when you kill your limit. I've done it but most days I'm more than satisfied with 6-8 birds in the bucket at sunset.- 24 replies

Now you've gone too far! No way is a bead on the end of your barrel as accurate as a scope. Can't happen, even at 50 yards. Adequate, yes they are but certainly not as accurate as a scope. At far as reliable, any decent scope these days isn't going to be an issue. Ever knock a bead off the end of a barrel or have one disappear for an unknown reason? I have. In inclement weather I'll take a scope any day over irons or a bead. Beads will surely get the job done but for someone that really enjoys an accurate well placed shot I don't think they are many people's first choice. They work for you and that's great & all that matters.

Cute to watch for sure. Almost makes ya want to NOT hunt them. Almost........

I got conked on the head by one once as a kid. The top panel flipped down and damn near knocked me & my buddy out. That COULD explain things...............................

Funny, all I see is a bullseye on his head.................................................................................grin

No scope on your shotgun grow? If I can recall clearly, I've only ever killed three deer, maybe four with open sights. One here in NYS with the inline and a couple few in PA with a flintlock. Never killed a single one with an open sighted shotgun but then again I never tried! I've been using scopes since my first year in 1977 for whitetail.

Depends. For me alone, 4-5. My wife will only eat a couple. Kids, also just a couple apiece. They really are delicious! Easy to clean, then a marinade & BBQ. Just don't leave the birds in your game vest with the dogs in the back of the truck for the ride back to the motel.........bad things WILL happen. Trust me....................................... IIRC, two labs devoured 8-10 fully feathered ungutted little speed devils. We hit the motel parking lot after just a 20 minute drive and opened the back of the truck. What we found was chaos, feathers everywhere! The only thing left was a couple legs and a wing that were to be consumed NEXT. Somewhere I have a couple pics of the dogs, covered in feathers. The following days bowel movements were quite a sight..........(the dogs, not mine)- 24 replies

Unreal...........................!

Years ago a friend had one slip down into the defroster vents on his Chevy p/u. While driving down Rt 15A in Springwater it BLEW! They bailed out of the truck, not knowing WTF was going on. They thought someone shot at them!!!!

You sure it ain't a 2002, green in color? I could tell you HORROR stories about dumping money into a truck. There is a very good reason a 2011 Toyota Tacoma sits in MY driveway now. It'll be two years old this weekend and so far I've put 31K on it without a single hickup. I bought it for two reasons, resale and dependability. Good luck with yours, sincerely.

You PUZZY!! <grin> Seriously, snap some pics if you can. Good luck!

I'd give it a new home. Put it in a 5gal bucket and transport it a mile or six away from me. Puzzy I am...........................................................

Yea, it sure is nice to see this morning. I had the dog out around 6am for a quick walk in the back yard. It is still Waaaaaaayyyy to wet to mow. Maybe tonight, after 8:30 it'll be dry enough, hopefully! I'd sure like to get it done before tomorrows rains come. I think Fri, Sat, Sun & Monday are rain free so far............... I'M GETTING WEBBED FEET NOW!!

Check out todays NY Outdoor News, page 4. They are saying it passed the senate and things look good for assembly. I couldn't come up with a link for here, sorry. Lock N Load, boys!!

I almost forgot, who wants to go fishing?
-
Yea, there is a lull in the action now. Sure, a few of the old geezers fish <grin> and a few guys are starting to get ready by tuning their bows etc but for the most part guys are just doing family stuff and recouping after a HARD turkey season (ME!) before the night time temps start to dip and the leaves start to change and it's time time start thinking RUT!!

Damn........Mother Nature sure set the bar high for them.
