  1. Some pups looking for a snack............
  2. Pics aren't too big when downloaded? Something must have changed since last year?? Here is the buck that was in front of the one above....
  3. Not the best pics but so far, I like what I see..................
  4. Nice pic of the old Iron. Good way to spend a day!
  5. A good bullet and placement are ALL that matter. Headstamps really mean very little.
  6. And if Keith had today's bullets to shoot back then he'd certainly be singing a different tune and the old "dudes" like Pygmy (with ALL due respect) would have had NOTHING to read!!
  7. 5 seems to be about right. 3 and we are slumming beef. We'd survive with 4 and with 6 we would be gifting some to friends. Thank God my wife and kids enjoy it. (or they' be down the road :'( )
  8. And.......If Ontario County ever goes rifle, I have friend who has a SxS 470 NE that I'd use to toast a doe in the pines with those slick open sights. I don't think he has the grapes anymore to do it himself! IIRC the ammo is $200 a box?? I don't think he'd let me take it over to Wyoming County and I wouldn't really want to.
  9. Back in about 1997 I killed a 4 pointer in PA with the 375 H&H. No problems. (I do think the bullet is still going though ) Why'd I do it, cause I could!
  10. Rate of twist is certainly the starting point in bullet selection in a given caliber/chambering. Lots of variables but you don't need to complicate things too much either. Like I've seen on the web, "shut up and shoot" ain't a bad way to think! Tomorrow I plan on dumping some rounds down range. Starting with the 243, then the 300 WSM and finishing up with the 375 H&H (my big medicine)
  11. Nice bow! I've shot a couple of those Northwind bows and they are smooth shooting. The maker is a good guy also.
  12. Good analogy... the hardest thing to do is age a deer beyound 3 1/2 on the hoof... simply because the body differences can be very subtle beyond 3 years old... but telling a young buck from an older buck is not that hard at all if you've seen enough bucks in your lifetime... its like the difference btween a teenage boy and an older man... and even easier if you take the time to learn a little about aging on the hoof. Most guys have never seen a buck older than 3.5 years, dead or alive. If they have, it's been the ass end! I guess if the question is, 1.5, 2.5 or 3.5, what does it really matter? Seeing that 3.5 year old buck during season is pretty rare and if you do get a look at him you'll be pulling the trigger long before you've given a thought to when his birthday is. When they are hanging in the shed, then I'll pop open the jaw for a peak.
  13. Ontario County is an awful big county. Please be more specific..........................!
  14. I think aging deer on the hoof, while the blood is still pumping is REALLY a humongous stretch of the active imagination. Most people that SHOULD know how to age a deer when they have the damned lower jaw in hand can't do it. And you expect a bunch of internet jockies to make an educated guess? Sorry, it ain't happening. (Have a nice day )
  15. I'll pass on the bleach. Bourbon? Certainly. After the hide is off; boning knife, cutting board (large 24x30?), grinder, Saran Wrap, freezer paper, masking tape and a Sharpie.
  16. Poached like an egg? I'm sure we'll get a very good explanation here real soon.
  17. I got up especially early this morning to get all the t's crossed, i's dotted and line up all my ducks! Another check for $26.70 is signed by the CEO of the hunting division of my household and ready to go. ;D Dan- Do you apply for the elk tag?? Do you know anyone that ever drew a tag, bull or cow? I know one guy who's father drew 4-5 years ago and corked a nice cow. What a hoot that would be to hunt PA for an elk!
  18. Mailing out the second round applications tomorrow??
  19. Congrats on the tag! I've been "donating" to the Pennsylvania Game Commission Elk lottery since its inception. I'm still bagless in Buffalo. ;D Look forward to your pictures, Antlers.
  20. Those 180's should be good brush busters
  21. I'm thinking that the "round" that has killed more deer in NYS has got to be the 12 gauge. With all the hunters that have been hamstrung with that damn shotgun for all these years in the western half of the state it's a wonder that any deer have succumbed to it. ;D Now, finally the rifle has arrived in many of these same counties and hunters can rejoice! NOW you'll see the 30-30, 300 Savage, 35 Rem etc. really get some face time. Grease up the slug guns and stash 'em in the back of the safe.
  22. Well, isn't this interesting.
  23. So, you can't fix stupid so what do we do? Grease up the guns and bury them until people get smarter? Each time I watch AFV (America's Funniest Video) I laugh my ass off at the stupid stuff people do with dirt bikes, skateboards, 4 wheelers, bulldozers, blah, blah AND blah. Anything can be dangerous if the "not so swift" is at the helm. What percentage of people DON'T have an accident with a firearm? 99.999999999999% I'd guess. Well, I've got a big decision coming up. 243 or 7mm08 for the Wyoming County deer I'm going to hunt? OR, 223 Ackley, 257 Roberts, 300WSM, 375 H&H? :-\ In Ontario County, it'll be the tried and true 209 ML or the XP100R. Hopefully I don't do anything stupid enough to hurt myself or anyone else.
