  1. Is there a reason you know it’s a buck and not a does bed? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  2. So a bittersweet, but nonetheless exciting and satisfying end to my bow season. I have been bowhunting now for 9 years now. I bought a used Mathews switchback in 2008, the bow technology is now 12 years old and I am starting to get itchy for a new one. So pending good health and financial status this may be her last. I've been fortunate to harvest a deer with the stick and string all but 3 season including my largest buck. We moved to Mississippi in 2014 and I was only able to harvest a doe in 2014 on a return trip home. Last year marked my first full bow season back in NY in 3 years. I was going on a 3 year archery dry spell and 3 year buck dry spell. Despite my dry spell, I had self imposed not shooting yearling bucks with any weapon and had wanted to wait to shoot a doe until late bow. These restrictions did not void me of opportunity, but they did leave me eating tag soup. My plan was unchanged this year, however as I passed small bucks and many doe early on it became clear that the fun of archery was starting to become lost. It was becoming work. If this season went without an arrow being flung I'd be entering season 4 without the satisfaction of that sound an arrow makes and the sense of joy and accomplishment of a good clean archery kill. As I entered this past weekend I had decided that anything but family groups, bb's and spikes were fair game. Add in 2 years of some really odd and funky luck, I was out taking a few shots Thursday and my drop away just snapped in half and went flying. I'm thinking I just cant buy a break and before swapping it for my old whisker biscuit i glued it with some 2 part jbweld plastic epoxy. I fired a dozen arrows Friday and she held. I still didn't feel super secure going into the woods Saturday. However, at 7:45 on a very crisp cold morning this 4 pointer made his way down a run to my left at 20 yards. I drew as he approached the shooting lane, his vision obscured by brush and as he approached he gave me a slight quartering towards, but mostly broadside shot i let the arrow fly. Instantly i saw blood spurt from behind the shoulder. I watched him run about 40 yards through the pines, stop, then another 20 before he tipped. The tail fluttered a few times and I began fist pumping 25' in the air. For I knew he was no monster buck, but I was forever excited to have another archery kill. Moral of the story for me is this. If you've been bow hunting less than 10 years, you really need to get out there and just keep flinging arrows. Time will come when I can be more choosy, but we shouldn't also deny ourselves what makes us happy. He weighed in at 113 lbs dressed and he will be tasty for sure.
  3. this has me pretty bummed. i hunt 8f almost all year, but drive into 7J for the opener. It's a good change of scenery and even better food and beer at night. I remember about 4 or 5 openers ago it was a downpour and it suckedddddd... opening day is usually my only all day sit of the year, so I'm not sure I'll make it in if they add these type of winds to the rain.
  4. aw dang it. it would have been nice for the dec to mention that. sorry guys. hope you don't think i'm any more of an a*hole than you already do
  5. wow. fighting wound or did you shoot him in the head? congrats!

  7. I just think it'd be kind of fun. We all know most casual hunters in NY are only out opening weekend and how exciting it can be. Imagine if that experience was 10 days or so? not true. almost all bowhunters are gun hunters. I'm happy to be hanging up my bow and switching to gun. We all enjoy the change, especially after this last weekend when it was so cold that it's not conducive to bow hunting. too long a season imo. see above. I have trouble with most things you write for a few reasons. You claim to have never lost a deer in all your years. You claim you feel nothing and deer are just meat to you. And iirc, you also would pass a big 12 for a nice eating small buck. I'm sorry that you stopped bowhunting because of others. I sure as shit would never let someone else stop me from doing something i love.
  8. killing deer and consistently killing mature bucks are different. Again, to each their own. I just like to put the greatest odds in my favor.
  9. at this risk of being argumentative i very much disagree. I've had plenty of deer downwind of me and killed many. I don't believe scent control is any guarantee but it sure is heck helps. I follow strict clothes washing, spraying and body washing. I basically hang all my outer layers outside as well. you can hunt however you'd like of course.
  10. yes. assuming it doesn't hit an artery there are no vitals there. It sure as heck would hurt, but these are tough as nails creatures. Think of it like a gun shot wound below your shoulder but above your heart. survivable. it's not a guarantee he's not dead like some others said, but it is not a guaranteed kill. Nothing in the deer woods is a guarantee lol. honestly that's what you should be hoping for as it's been almost a day and now rain/snow. just being realistic in that it's an unlikely recovery if he's dead.
  11. Are you kidding me with this? More than 150 people helped try to find what looks like a little brat. Livingston County Town of Leicester Search: On Oct. 24 at 7:40 p.m. Lt. Tim Flanagan received a request from the Livingston County Sheriff's Department for assistance in locating a 21-year-old female who had run away from her residence in Leicester. The subject had a history of running away from home. Over the course of the next three days, 15 Forest Rangers set up an incident command structure to organize search efforts involving more than 150 personnel, including DEC Environmental Conservation Officers (ECOs) and DEC K-9 units, Livingston County Sheriff's Department, numerous area fire departments, State Police, NY Federation of Search and Rescue, and community volunteers. Operations included utilizing ground crews and NY State Police Aviation, boats, and K-9 units. Livingston County Sheriff's and State Police investigators conducted an intensive investigation involving door-to-door interviews and issuing a Missing Vulnerable Alert. Crews searched wooded areas outward from the residence, with unsuccessful results. At 7:20 p.m. on Oct. 26, the subject returned to the residence, at which time the family notified authorities. 12. That’s a survivable, nonlethal wound Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  13. It’s your choice of course, but it’s not the distance. It’s the transferring of odors from your ride to your clothes. 5 min or 50. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  14. Also the rut kicked in right around the same time. Social media will not be a gauge, reported harvest numbers will be. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  16. If you travel you really shouldn’t wear your outer layer in the truck. If you hunt behind the house you have a nice privilege that not all of us have. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  17. Everyone should take pics. You don’t have to share them. I️ love going through old ones. I️ have them all organized by season. They bring back good memories, especially the doe where I️ don’t have wall art to trigger it. I️ hope some day when you start losing it that you don’t regret it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
